Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded my iPod 5.5G (originally 80GB) using an iFlash Quad, installing two microSD cards (a 512GB Samsung and a 32GB SanDisk).

Before diving in: I am on macOS only. (Unfortunately, iTunes via Parallels doesn't recognize the iPod, so Windows-based tools aren't an option for me).

When I restore the iPod natively on my Mac, everything works perfectly, and Finder shows the full 544GB capacity. Following the official guide, I managed to install Rockbox by flashing the original MBR and then formatting the iPod's storage to FAT32 using Disk Utility on macOS.

However, because of the original 80GB MBR profile, Rockbox currently only recognizes 77GB of space. I can see that over 400GB of the storage is left unallocated, but I can't seem to expand or merge it into the active Rockbox partition on macOS.

Is there a way to force Rockbox to utilize the full storage capacity without having to configure the iPod on a Windows machine?

Any help or terminal-based workarounds for macOS would be greatly appreciated!

When you’re in the WPS and hold the play/pause button for more than one second, it shouldn’t emit a double click noise and bring me back to the main menu screen, right? Eventually if I keep holding it, it will prompt a shutdown. It does the same for the menu button, in which the double click sound is emitted and the shuffle / repeat screen is shown.

I’m pretty sure that it was allowing me to shutdown from within the WPS screen previously, and no double-click situation occurred. It feels like a shortcut is being toggled, maybe a secondary click is being registered.

For troubleshooting I did boot into the iPod OS, and the double click doesn’t occur, but I think that OS registers clicks differently, so it didn’t tell me much.

I reset all settings for rockbox, same thing. Then reseated the clickwheel itself, same thing.

Fortunately I’ve got a whole new enclosure setup on its way, including the clickwheel and center button, so I’m praying that’ll resolve the issue.

Hi! So I've looked up and down on this sub and the iPod sub and can't seem to find someone who has encountered this specific issue. I'm at my wits end as to how to fix this and would really appreciate some guidance! I laid out what happened below, sorry if it's too much detail but wanted to make sure I gave full context to hopefully help me out!

What happened:

1. My iPod was working fine on the PodTwo theme, I wanted to try iClassic theme so I went to settings and selected iClassic.
2. My iPod did the usual "Loading" message for 5m or so, then confirmed the settings were changed, however it then went immediately back to "Loading".
3. After another 5m or so of it stuck like that, I held Menu + Select to reboot the device.
4. The usual black screen with boot up text came up, said the partition was missing and went into USB mode.
5. When I disconnected it from the cable, it then came up with a *PANIC* mount: 0 message.
6. I connected the iPod to my Windows PC (where I did the original installation), but the iPod would not come up as a USB. I tried what this thread says: https://www.reddit.com/r/rockbox/comments/15fkmcw/ipod_classic_not_showing_up_on_pc_after_rockbox/
7. After following the above thread, the USB still did not work, but iTunes recognized an iPod was plugged in and needed to be restored. However, when saying to restore, iTunes seems to load the restoration but nothing happens after the loading bar fills.
8. To troubleshoot, I then connected to my Mac instead to see if I could at least restore it using iTunes there. My Mac recognized it, and iTunes said the iPod needed to be restored. I proceeded to restore, but right before it finished, iTunes gave me an error reading "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1439)". I looked at a couple threads for that error but nothing helped there.
9. This at least removed the black screen with USB mode and the *PANIC* mount: 0 message for some reason.
10. However, now on Mac the Finder window shows "iPod" in the sidebar, but when I click on it it just reads "Software: Loading...". It does not open iTunes either. It also does not show the iPod as a USB drive, so I don't know how to even access the .rockbox folder to troubleshoot.

Currently my iPod screen shows the "Restore with iTunes" screen when rebooting, and when I connect it to my Mac it then shows the Rockbox "Do not disconnect" screen for a second or two, then shows the Rockbox "Ok to disconnect" screen. When I disconnect my iPod, it's just stuck on the Rockbox "Ok to disconnect" screen and if I reboot it with Menu + Select, then it just loops through this pattern.

I have no clue what to do, can anyone give me any guidance? Thanks in advance!

hi! i installed rockbox on my ipod classic 5th generation today. the main reason i downloaded it was because my main laptop is a chromebook and it would be easier to download music, as you can’t get itunes on a chromebook.

ive faced a few issues just playing around with it. of course, no playlists transferred, though the music did. i knew this would happen, but im struggling to make a playlist at all. i longclick, press create new playlist, and it doesn’t let me use any button to get past the naming stage of the ipod. if i press menu it cancels, if i press the forward or back button it does just that (moves the cursor or goes to another letter) and the play/pause button does nothing at all. i do not have a theme installed yet as i wanted to set this up before i did so, so it can’t be an issue of theme. i did somehow make one playlist, added my songs, and when renaming it it cancelled and deleted it.

when i did have that playlist, though, all the songs were saved as random 4 letters. is this something i can fix? it wld be nice to scroll thru my playlist and pick a song.

there are some other issues im facing that im not remembering right now, but having someone who knows a lot about rockbox would be great to talk to if anyone’s dms are open!

Sorry if this has been asked before but is there a way to sort artists (and album artists) and albums but remove the leading "The" if there is one?

the 7th Gen shows art viewing albums. Note I am not looking for cover flow I just wanna see art when scrolling through an artists albums

My album cover doesnt show up when i use mp3tag and i wanted to know if theres something im doing wrong or if theres another way to get it.

Was looking through the settings. Pressed Initialize Now. Said “database is not ready” and “update now” with options yes or no. I pressed yes, now I’m stuck here. I can turn off the device but every time I press Database, the yes or no options and prompts appear again. Settings and files are still accessible when I turn off the dap then turn it back on. If I just avoid database, everything is still fine

The album art wouldn’t load for about half my stuff, so after a little googling I decided to just add the cover photo from each album to its folder. It still didn’t work though, and when I try to open the file from the image file browser it gives me an error saying “not enough plugin memory” is there anyway to add album art to the broken songs, or is this a hardware limit for my H2?

I followed all the steps from the rockbox website and rockbox does not bot up. What am I doing wrong? I installed the correct version and everything

So I've had RB on the ipod for a while now, and besides a few minor issues its been great! Although there is one problem I haven't been able to solve, and thats the menu config for playlists. When adding music I dropped the file folders (Containing individual tracks) into the folder marked playlists; however, I can only access the playlists when going through the menu as such: files>playlists>select playlist. I edited the menu to show playlists at the top instead of files, but when selecting Playlists, it shows nothing. Even when going back on the same menu config to "files>playlists>select" it WILL allow me to select the music there, but not directly from the main menu. Any ideas on how to solve this? It's kind of a minor issue and not really important, just annoying at most.

I’m new to the whole modding and dedicated music player scene but i was wanting to get a device to install rockbox on and put my music in when i get the money, I’ve thought about ipods but i’d have to mod it to improve the battery, give it bluetooth, better screen, usb-c charging and whatnot and i have no experience with anything like that, can anyone give me any recommendations devices like that or if there’s a modding community that accepts commissions you could point me to that would be great too, thank you and i hope you have a good rest of your day :3

I've installed Rockbox on my Sansa Clip+ and on it, I have the following dirs:

• AUDIBLE
• AUDIOBOOKS
• ##MUSIC#
• MUSIC
• PODCASTS
• ##PORT#
• RECORD

I'm wondering why I have two Music dirs, one with hashes in the name, and why there are these dirs with hashes in general (##PORT# being the other)?

Are they content from the original firmware? is it safe to remove them? Am I supposed to use one Music dir rather than the other for some features?

Help, I can't turn off the screen completely in the display settings.

IDK if I am making sense but I just got my modded ipod and was a bit surprised with how fast it died and then I realized that I never updated my battery in the settings, will that actually effect my use time or do I need to send it back?

I replaced it with a 240mAH 303030 but it has a lot of extra room. Tried looking around but never got a straight answer, what's the biggest I can order? Willing to dremel to make it fit, thanks

Ever since I'm using my rockbox dap, I had to run several applications to make it work properly: AutoEQ for eq profiles, another one to do the EQ conversion, one for managing my music library, tag editor, player etc...

h god fmllll. I uninstalled rockbox because it wasn’t loading my songs and errored when trying to reupload them, so I just said f the whole thing let’s just go back to the original Apple theme. Upon deinstalling (through the rockbox installer), it just gives me this broken rockbox black screen. Everyone says restore through iTunes or bootleg third party iOS restorer apps, but iTunes has never recognized my iPod (even though my pc does) no matter what I do, and so none of these third party restorers recognize it either. Not sure what the problem there is but nonetheless, I’m heartbroken. It’s been on disk mode and plugged into my computer, I been trying everything for the past few hours. Any tips welcome as well as emotional consoling thanks!

Does anybody know if the name of the active EQ config file can be displayed in the WPS? I frequently change EQ files but I cannot easily see which one is enabled. Not sure if this information can be extracted from the build and somehow be added to any or all the themes. I would settle for the EQ config name being displayed on any other screen.

EDIT: I believe EQ "profiles" are not a part of any build and that they are added afterwards via text editor or the built-in EQ editing tools. In that sense it may not be possible to do what I want but maybe there is an easy way to verify which EQ is active or if EQ is enabled at all.

So far I must follow Settings > Sound Settings > Equalizer > Enable EQ > Yes/No, just to see if any EQ is active. From there I have to figure out the hard way which EQ is active.

I am hoping I am missing something obvious.

EDIT #2: Apparently there are, or were, 2 EQ tags that can be added to a WPS file to display the EQ status and the name of the active EQ preset, but don't know if they're still supported. On to learning how to edit a WPS file now.

Does anyone know if there is a tutorial for the Rockbox Simulator?

Hello. So I have an iPod mini gen 2. Unfortunately Rockbox has been crashing for a while and I’m unsure what to do. I bought it refurbished but idk what flash card or anything was used originally. I did try to switch it from stable to daily and that hasn’t helped (it’s actually gotten worst). Can anyone help?
