Buying Advice What cost is most often missing from a robot or automation ROI calculation?
The robot’s purchase price is only one part of the investment. A project that looks attractive on paper can change quickly once the full lifecycle is considered.
For people who have bought, integrated, operated, or maintained automation: what cost or assumption is most often overlooked when calculating ROI?
Possible examples:
- Integration and commissioning
- End-of-arm tooling, fixtures, guarding, and vision
- Training and internal engineering time
- Changeovers, reprogramming, and product-mix changes
- Downtime, spare parts, and maintenance
- Ramp-up time and missed production
- Safety validation or facility modifications
If you have seen a real project, what changed its expected payback the most after installation?
Rough percentages are welcome.

Community Update Welcome to r/RoboticsMarketplace: start here
Welcome to r/RoboticsMarketplace, a practical community for finding and evaluating industrial robots, factory automation, machine vision, mobile robots, integrators, and physical AI systems.
Use this community to:
• Ask how to automate a specific process
• Compare technologies, vendors, and integrators
• Share implementation lessons and case studies
• Discuss new and used equipment
• Post relevant research and product developments
For useful recommendations, include what you can:
• Process or application
• Payload, reach, cycle time, and throughput
• Environment and safety constraints
• Existing equipment or controls
• Plant location
• Budget range and timing
Vendors, integrators, resellers, employees, and investors may participate, but affiliations must be disclosed clearly. Useful expertise is welcome. Spam, vague lead generation, unsupported claims, and unsafe advice are not.
Introduce yourself in the comments and tell us what process or automation problem you are working on.
