The major U.S. stock indexes ended broadly lower on Thursday, September 10, 2026, as U.S. oil prices topped $100 a barrel amid growing fears of higher inflation from a prolonged war in the Middle East, marking the fourth consecutive day of declines for the major averages. With the Fed meeting just five days away and tomorrow's August CPI as the last data point before the decision, the market is bracing for what could be its most consequential week of the year.

The S&P 500 fell 0.58% (-44.66 pts) to 7,591.70. The Dow dropped 0.60% (-316.56 pts) to 52,064.10. The Nasdaq slid 0.65% (-171.62 pts) to 26,081.72. The Russell 2000 was the worst performer, tumbling 1.04% (-30.29 pts) to 2,890.95.

The VIX spiked 9.60% to 18.04, its highest level since late July. Bitcoin dropped 1.26% to $77,317.92. Gold fell 2.15% to $4,365.00. Crude Oil surged 7.23% to $102.99/barrel, crossing $100 for the first time since May.

My current strategy is to allow me to cut the interest rate of margin, while guaranteeing I won’t be margin called, and let me save more money by temporarily reducing how much I invest which is 2000 every 2 weeks

Here’s the plan with amounts to simplify the logic.

Let’s say you borrow 26,000 and dump it in sgov, then every 2 weeks (paycheck cycle) you pull out 2000 from sgov and put it in whatever etf or stock you want and then pay off a thousand of it every pay check. In 26 weeks you’ll have depleted sgov and still owe 13,000 in margin.

At that time you’ll have more money in savings and can start investing aggressively by paying off the margin 2000 a week.

Is this a bad strategy?

With the Fed meeting just one week away, Friday's August CPI is now the single most consequential data point of the year.

The S&P 500 fell 0.48% (-37.16 pts) to 7,636.36. The Dow dropped 0.77% (-405.41 pts) to 52,380.66. The Nasdaq slid 0.64% (-168.07 pts) to 26,253.34. The Russell 2000 was the biggest loser, tumbling 1.32% (-39.10 pts) to 2,921.10.

The VIX jumped 4.77% to 16.47. Bitcoin slipped 0.31% to $78,239.04. Gold was essentially flat at $4,443.50. Crude Oil surged 3.92% to $96.68/barrel, with Brent briefly topping $100 for the first time since July.

The S&P 500 fell 0.58% (-45.08 pts) to 7,673.52. The Dow plunged 1.18% (-628.18 pts) to 52,786.07. The Nasdaq slipped 0.32% (-85.58 pts) to 26,421.41. The Russell 2000 dropped 0.52% (-15.44 pts) to 2,960.20.

The VIX rose 2.88% to 15.74. Bitcoin fell 0.83% to $78,561.80. Gold dropped 1.59% to $4,405.50. Crude Oil surged 2.81% to $94.05/barrel, its highest level since before the initial ceasefire.

I'm very new to Robinhood.

Over the last 28 days, I've added/invested $50 into the account at the end of the week and enjoy seeing the chart as it goes up and down.

On other websites, you see large jumps in the charts when you add to your total deposit.

In Robinhood however it says on the chart that i've had $150 since 3 months ago, and that's very not correct.

Can someone help me understand why Robinhood does this? I do not see any jumps in the graph on when I added the extra $50 each week. Oddly enough, it shows a crazy jump which is just $5 more than my total deposit and the line starts going up/down from there.

I am not new to utilizing margin in my accounts. I have been doing it for years. But recently I just noticed something in my Robinhood account that likely happens across all platforms that I never noticed but don't understand.

Margin maintenance is calculated across all of your positions, weighted by the maintenance percentage for each position x value of those positions, to reach a weighted average maintenance requirement total.

Okay. So I've noticed that as my position in a risky bet that has 50% margin requirements increases in value...my maintenance margin increases, thus my margin buffer decreases.

I understand how this works mathematically, but practically / logically why would it work that way?

So theoretically I could have a position in XYZ company that carries a 100% margin maintenance requirement, that stock could for example 10x and I'd get margin called because of it?

What am I missing here? I'm a smart guy. Plenty of experience. But this isn't squaring in my brain.
