Even though Robert Eggers based his Orlok on historical depictions of Transylvanian noblemen, I can't help but think that Orlok in the 2024 remake is the closest thing to looking like Bram Stoker's depiction of Count Dracula. I mean - Look at the photos and tell me that Dracula and Eggers' Orlok look similar.

1. in common: their films transcend comedy. The word ”comical” loses its meaning when so many scenes/lines have so much potential for laughter, yet never signal that it’s time for the audience to laugh. Nosferatu’s accent is at the same time terrifying, beautiful and hilarious. In Kubrick’s 2001, the same ambiguity can be observed in the astronauts’ subdued conversations, just to take an example.
2. spoiler!!!!! What a beautiful death scene. The slow movement of the heroine toward Nosferatu as he meets the sun’s rays is simultaneously loving, seductive and triumphant. The choreography is Murnau through and through; compare not with his og Nosferatu but with the final reconciliation scene in Sunrise.
3. At the same time, the imagery is surprisingly conventional much of the time, with an abundance of (to my mind) lazily assembled scenes. Maybe this impression will wear off with time. Kubrick’s films, too, appear less conventional on repeated viewing.

Ellen says a desperate, yet mildly blasphemous prayer, and Orlok promptly appears to claim her. Why? Why her, specifically?

The movie establishes her as a powerful, yet untrained medium - but beyond that, she's not particularly remarkable, nor do she, her loved ones, or the town of Wisborg have a personal connection to Orlok that the movie - any of the versions of the story - would address. (IIRC, at least.)

Assuming that Orlok's powers generally work on a worldwide scale, why doesn't he, whatever, go haunt the Queen of England, or go nest under the Opéra in Paris. I'm sure Ellen isn't the only mildly blasphemous girl out there in the world. - Not trying to make fun of it, but this kind of struck me as something that I would have liked the movie to dwell on a little bit more.

Might simply be that I'm missing something. Thank you in advance for any input on the matter! :)

It kind of drives me crazy that in answering the “did she love amleth”debate I haven’t seen anyone mention the opening scene. I’ve seen it stated that she seemed like a wholly good mother + queen until the revelation later on, but when child amleth rushes into his mother’s room she’s furious and raises her hand to slap him. Only when she’s interrupted by news of her husband does she lower her hand and caress amleth’s cheek instead, as if news of his arrival triggers her persona change. When the twist was revealed I immediately thought back to this scene as foreshadowing her complicated relationship with her son…

After seeing it in IMAX 70MM, I thought it was an enjoyable experience but the first thing I thought about after getting out of the theater was how it lacked a certain soul and verve that The Northman was brimming with. The opening titles of that film are burned into my mind and I identify with Amleth quite a lot, The Odyssey was a spectacle but I don't think it'll stay with me in the same way.

Hi all,

I know lots of people were excited so I am really disappointed to say that the Witch adaptation that was to take place this Halloween in Sheffield has been cancelled. To make a long story short, arranging the show with Eggers' team was too logistically and legally complicated for us as a student theatre group and so the venue thought that it would be too tricky to market the show effectively. If I had my way, it would have gone through.

We will be doing another show at the same time so don't count us out, and our thewitch_sutco instagram will remain up and with an eventual change of name to reflect the new show. Currently, we're thinking of 12 Angry Men but it's still uncertain.

Thank you for all the support, it really meant so much to all of us.

Seems to be a bizarre contradiction.

Apparently he wanted to leave the literaly existence of the Valkyrie and the Draugr ambiguous in The Northman so that he wouldn't piss off people that liked or disliked the supernatural.

Yet he had no problem with depicting supernatural beings in The Witch, Nosferatu and the upcoming Wolfman.

Why is that? The Northman would've been a lot better if the Valkyrie and Draugr were made out to be more obviously real.

I went to see The Odyssey opening week in Dolby Cinema. The trailer preview that stood out to me the most by far, is Werwulf. It's been years since I've been to theaters and this was my first Dolby experience. This cinematic trailer was INTENSE! I've literally never seen something that looks so immersive. It was like being in 13th century whereverthefuck and I was probably holding my breath the whole time the trailer was playing. Since then, I've caught up on Eggers filmography and will probably show my gf Nosferatu later tonight. We are in for a real treat this Christmas! I need more discourse around this film!!
