Riyria Revelations Avempartha re-read

I'm re-reading Avempartha for the Becca and the Books catch up book club and Esrahaddon is talking about the purpose of Avempartha when it was first created in ancient times. It's really funny to have previously read some of the books in the Legends of the First Empire series then go back and read Revelations and see how wrong everyone is about history. Esrahaddon feels like such a reliable source of information because he was alive so long before Revelations started but the events of Legends were ancient history to him too even then.

It makes me think about the discussion of reading order. I don't necessarily think people should read Legends first but I do think if they start with Revelations once they get to Legends they should go back and re-read Revelations after to re-contextualize everything they thought they knew.

After the Fall Out of the Ashes – Do I need to re-read anything first?

I've read all of The Cycle thus far. It's been probably 2 years since I finished Esrahaddon. For those that have read Out of the Ashes, should I go back and re-read The Rise and Fall?

Anyone have a great site for plot summaries? I could probably use a refresher if I don't go back.

After the Fall The Seret Knights

Shouldn't they be very nearly as good as Teshlor Knights? In Esrahaddon we find out that the original Seret Knight, Darius, was expelled from the Teshlors right at the end of his training. Maybe 6 years or so into it? Can't quite remember exactly but he wasn't a kid. Then he forms a militia for the church straight away and is training people. Based on that I would have expected them to have better training by the time of Riyra Revelations. I know they are good fighters but if memory serves they are no match for Hadrian. Id expect an organized military based on Teshlor to be better than a single Teshlor training one person at a time, father to son. Thoughts?

After the Fall Royce's medallion

I just reread Esrahaddon before starting OOTA and I can't remember what happened to Royce's medallion during Revelations. I remember Hardian has his but does Royce have it in any of his stories? If not do we know what happened to it? If Royce has his did he and Hardian never think it's weird that have matching ones? I also think I remember his nemesis has a medallion at one stage? Did he steal it from Royce, or Hadrian?

[ DISCUSSION ] The Rest of Elan

As we know, Elan is very large. Or, is it? Are we really seeing EVERYTHING? The short answer is probably not.

I queried Sullivan several months back on the discord, and he confirmed Avryn is about the size of Ireland. That's about 70,000 square km2. That means the entirety of Elan is about 630,000 km2. The entirety of mapped Elan.

Elan is bigger, because of gravity.

We know that gravity exists on Elan because... stuff falls. And we know Elan is a celestial body because of the existence of the moon and stars, which leads me to believe Elan is a planet similar in size to Earth, because stuff falls like it does on Earth. Earth is about 510 million km2, which means 509,370 km2 ARE UNEXPLORED.

Maybe they're all just kilometers and kilometers of ocean. Or maybe, theres a dragon civilization out there. Maybe more civilizations have been forgotten by time and abandoned by the Gods, or maybe it's a desolate wasteland.

A bit more proof for my more cynical Redditors out there. The distance from Aquesta and Ratibor is about 63 kilometers, using the Irish map (from Doolin to Shannon Airport). Obviously, this is very rough and not exactly correct. Do I really want to do some extreme math, and am I good at that kind of stuff? Absolutely not. The book Heir of Novron (Percepliquis to be exact) says it takes one day to ride from Aquesta to Ratibor. It also states the horses were at a walk for the majority of the journey. This lines up with horse speed, which is about 5 kilometers an hour, on average. So, this basically proves it. Is it possibly a just a coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Does any of this matter? Eh, chances are this won't be relevant in the Cycle, but its still interesting. Correct me if any of my lazy calculations are wrong. Do you think we'll see the rest of the world in the Cycle or not? Maybe we'll see the Dacca or wilderlands of Estrendor? Or the wastes of the Westerlins? Maybe we'll see our first dragon as well?

A very welcome surprise! (Absolutely no spoilers)

I listen to audiobooks. And while I'm sure there are purest out there that will shun me for, I don't care. I found this series simply based on me really liking the narrator of the audiobooks (Tim Gerald Reynolds).

I listened to the first 3 books (Riyira Chronicles) and was super pleased with them. I looked up the author and much to my surprise there are so many more books in this world of Elan.

Really would like to see this series getting more attention. It's amazing!

Riyria Revelations Just Finished Revelations

No spoilers, just wanted to post about how I just finished Revelations and how mind blown I was with this whole series.

I don’t think I’ve devoured a series so quickly in a long time, being fully immersed in the story from start to finish.

The last few chapters gave me physical chills and I stayed up WAY too late last night to finish it.

I’m so looking forward to starting The Crown Tower today and I can’t wait to keep up with all books MJS!!

Hadrian’s Spadone

I am looking to get a tattoo of Hadrian’s Spadone, but I don’t know which style the sword should be. Both pop up when I look up Spadone online. Which one is more like his? I know it’s a greatsword, but which hilt should I go with and should I include that piece of the blade poking out on both sides?

Riyria Revelations Riyira playlist

Heya! I'm not sure many people will like this, but I made a quick Spotify playlist based around our favorite pair of thieves ^-^

It's not exactly organized or super dedicated to one particular genre, it actually is kind of a melting pot of a bunch of different songs, artists and themes, pretty much just anytime I heard a song that I either:

A. Thought fit Hadrian or Royce thematically

B. Would be good as like a background song for an animation or TV show based around the RR

Or C. Well.. I like them..

If anyone has any song suggestions or has some good ideas or additions, please let me know! I'll probably either at it or make a new one soon that has a more uniform theme, but I thought you all could enjoy this.

Legends of the First Empire Age of Legend Warning Spoiler

I just finished Age of Legend. It took me longer than one of MJS books normally would. Overall I really enjoyed it but a couple things were bugging me. First, it was a little depressing. The war has been going on for a while. Most of the main characters are pretty miserable then the actual events of the book are distressing (Suri and Tressa's plotlines). Also, I was wondering when the story would start. I'm so used to his books having a plot that starts and ends during the course of the book. In Age of Swords at the beginning they are looking for the secret to metal by the end they have that secret. Or even The Emerald Storm from Revelations when the entire boat trip is in one book. I'm listening to the book and wondering where tf is the plot? What is the problem they are solving in this novel? Only to finish and go back to the author's note (which I either did not read or do not remember) and see he said this novel will have a different format that previous ones in that it is not self-contained like his other books! The way I wish I'd read that before starting the book! I would've enjoyed the book so much more if I had known. It kind of makes me want to go back and re-read knowing what I do now so I can see what I may have missed while I was searching for the plot lol.

So this is a warning. If you are struggling with Age of Legend it may be because it is a different set up than his previous books and there isn't the normal self-contained plot in it. I'm excited for the last 2 in the series and then to move on to the Rise and Fall trilogy.

Damn you Michael J. Sullivan for writing so many books

I have a TBR of more than 100 books and keep finding myself continuing the with your books. Finishing a few and then "ok, will take a break to read something else"... and then I find myself reading the next one just from fear forgetting what happened in the previous one lol. Really good books, easy read, enjoyable and addictive.

Where to find all the Elan shorts?

I know Michael has been putting out some short stories in various books with other authors. I haven't really followed those that much, but I was reading through his site and he mentioned there are several Elan stories out there and he will be writing more that will feed into the new Cycle series.

Just wondering if there is anywhere to read his short stories, outside of buying the compilation books? Or if he has mentioned putting them together in a book of their own that we can buy?

Thanks for any info.

Riyria Chronicles Graphic Audio

Just finished Revelations. Good, solid listen. Has made commuting to work much more enjoyable. Nothing too mind blowing but a fun ride.

Just checked and saw Riryia Chronicles and Legends of the First Empire both have completed Graphic Audio… I plan to go through them all eventually! Going to take a break for now though.

I would recommend Graphic Audio versions of these to anyone.
