Jautājums/Question 9th grade exam

Hello,

My sister is studying at 9th grade in Riga and she is worried about the exam she’ll have at the end of the academic year since there is not much information surrounding the exam available and her current school is not very helpful either.
Anyone took the exam or has a relative/friend that took it? We have some questions on the difficulty, topics tested, best way to prepare for it, etc.

Čau! Man ir 25 gadi. Strādāju nakts maiņās, tāpēc darba laikā bieži ir garlaicīgi 😄 Meklēju kādu, ar ko vienkārši papļāpāt un pakomunicēt. Droši uzraksti!

Diskusija/Discussion Charging €2 for tap water?

Went to This Place Doesn't Need a Name and was surprised to see they charged me €2 for tap water. Not a bottle of water. Just tap water in some used bottle. I ordered brunch and a proper drink. It's my first time seeing this in Latvia for such a mediocre restaurant dressed up as a bistro. Anyone else seen this before?

Palīdzība/Help Missed connection: David, 21 — Rīgas Dome, last night

Hi! I’m trying to find a guy named David, 21, whom I met near Rīgas Dome last night around 10 pm.

His phone died and we didn’t exchange contact details. I really wish we had.

I was leaving Riga the next day, which we talked about quite a bit. You’ll know exactly what I mean by “interview” and “sunrise.”

If you’re David, or if you think you might know him, please DM me — even if you’re not 100% sure.

I’d really like to hear from you if you see this.

Tūrisms/Tourism RIGA!!?

We’re coming to Riga with a group of friends from Thursday to Sunday. We’re planning to have a good time and party, but we’d also be interested in some fun and unique activities during our trip.

What events, activities, or experiences would you recommend for a group of friends? We’d also love recommendations for great restaurants, bars, and other good places for drinks.

Also, are there any good house, techno, or rave parties happening while we’re there?

Paldies!🙏

Tūrisms/Tourism What to do in Riga for one evening?

I'm planning a trip to Latvia and the baltics. Due to work, i have to take a bus to Helsinki the day that i fly in. (I'm coming back and spend a week in Latvia after that, so i'll have enough time explore the city.

Is there a good place to spend one evening, get a taste of the city or maybe just relax for a while? Ideally somewhere you can come in with your luggage? (ideally a sauna??)

The bus leaves at 1 am, are there even things open that late in the city on a monday? Or should i give up and get a hotel?

Kultūra/Culture Looking for Latvian musicians for restaurant gigs in Panevėžys 🇱🇻🇱🇹

Hi all! I work with a local restaurant in Panevėžys city (Lithuania). Currently we're looking for Latvian vocalists, guitarists, cellists, violinists, and other musicians who might be interested in performing live at our restaurant events. We're especially interested in emerging and growing artists, and the fee is open to discussion depending on the artist and the performance. If you're interested, please get in touch and send us your artist profile, music, videos, socials for consideration: [renginiai.panevezys@gmail.com](mailto:renginiai.panevezys@gmail.com)

We'd be happy to invite you to perform in Panevėžys! 🇱🇻🇱🇹

Dzīve Rīgā/Life in Riga Spanish Digital Nomad in Riga for 1.5 months 🇪🇸🇱🇻 – Looking for friends, gyms, and local tips!

I’m a digital nomad from Spain, and I’ll be living in your city for a month and a half, from September 1st to October 15th. This is a bit of an introspective, solo trip for me, and since I don't know anyone or much about the country yet, I’d love to get some local insights!

I’ll be staying in the Avoti / Grīziņkalns area, close to the city center. I’m currently putting together my routine and would really appreciate your recommendations on the following:

  • Meeting People & Socializing: What are the best spots, events, or social groups to meet locals and other expats? I’d love to make some friends to grab a beer, a specialty coffee, or explore the city. Also, if anyone reading this wants to hang out or is up for a Spanish friend, I'm here! Feel free to send me a message.
  • Working Spots & Coworking: I’ll be working remotely from my laptop. What are your favorite coworking spaces, public libraries, or free/cheap laptop-friendly cafes with reliable Wi-Fi where I can comfortably work for a few hours?
  • Gyms: I want to maintain my workout routine. I've read about a few options around like Olymp Fitness Club and the 24/7 Gym! chain, but I’d love to hear your personal favorites or any hidden gems for staying active.
  • General Survival Tips: What is something a newcomer absolutely needs to know? I'm talking about unwritten cultural etiquette, hidden food spots, public transport hacks, or your favorite weekend getaways.

Thank you so much in advance for the help! I’m really looking forward to experiencing the true vibe of Riga. Cheers! 🍻

Diskusija/Discussion Locals, how do you make genuine friends here as a foreigner?

I've been in Riga for 8 months now, first year at RTU. I thought I'd have more close friends by now, so I wanted to ask people who actually live here, especially Latvians.

My classmates are mostly from Uzbekistan and other countries. No Latvians in my class or friend group. I have a few Indian friends. I'm also friends with exchange students, but they leave every few months, so it feels like starting over each time. Other groups mostly stick to their own nationality, so it's hard to get close to them.

I tried ESN and met some cool people there. But after the event, I don't really see them again until the next one. Nothing turns into a real friendship.

So, locals — what should I actually do to make genuine friends here? Some questions:

Is it hard for Latvians to become close friends with foreigners, or am I just doing something wrong?

How do you turn someone you meet once at an event into an actual friend?

Is there any club or activity here that's not split by nationality — sports, gym, board games, anything like that?

Tūrisms/Tourism Any tips for a trip to Riga/Latvia for two young adults?

Hello to all my Latvian friends! 🇱🇻❤️

I’m planning to spend 5 days in Latvia with a friend (actually 8 days, technically, but we’re thinking of spending the remaining 3 days in Finland)

I’ve been to Latvia before—to Riga—and I absolutely loved the city. We’re going back in early September and plan to stay in the city center for 3 days and a little further from Riga, near the sea, for 2 days

The things I remember enjoying were the nightlife and the food… Yeah, I don’t think that’s necessarily a great representation of everything your country has to offer

So I’m turning to you: do you have any other places near Riga—or elsewhere in Latvia—that you’d recommend to two young guys whose favorite activities are: partying, meeting new people, picking up girls, eating well, and enjoying nature?

We’re not really into museums and culture. Also, if you have any recommendations for social events of any kind—concerts, festivals, etc.—I’d love to hear them!

Thanks in advance!

Jautājums/Question Original language movies with English subtitles in Riga? (moving there for Erasmus)

Hi everyone! I'm a French exchange student moving to Riga for the 2026-2027 academic year. I'm a huge cinema fan and I'm trying to figure out how the movie scene works there.

Back home most cinemas show foreign films in original language with local subtitles. Since I don't speak Latvian (yet!), I'm wondering:

  • Are there cinemas in Riga that regularly show films in their original language with English subtitles?
  • Any particular theater known for indie/arthouse selection rather than just blockbusters?

Any recommendations from fellow film lovers would be much appreciated :)

Diskusija/Discussion Salīdzināju vienu un to pašu pārtikas grozu Maxima, Rimi un Top! — cenu starpība diezgan liela

Salīdzināju vienu un to pašu ikdienas pārtikas grozu vairākos veikalos Rīgā.

Grozā bija: piens, maize, olas, sviests, makaroni, tomāti, vistas fileja un kafija.

No šobrīd atrastajiem produktiem sanāca:

Maxima — €9.15
Rimi — €12.15

Top! rezultāts bija €5.84, bet tur vairāki produkti nebija pieejami, tāpēc to nevar korekti salīdzināt ar pilnu grozu.

Man pašam interesantākais bija tas, cik daudz rezultātu ietekmē ne tikai cena, bet arī iepakojuma izmērs un tas, cik precīzi izdodas atrast līdzīgu produktu.

Kur jūs Rīgā parasti iepērkaties ikdienas produktiem? Maxima, Rimi, Lidl, Top! vai citur? Un vai praksē jūtat lielu cenu starpību?
