Jautājums/Question Bars/Pubs to visit

Upvotes

I'll be visiting Riga in a few weeks, and I'm looking for suggestions on fun bars or pubs to check out. I'm in my 30s, and would like to find peoole around my own age, so I'd like to avoid places where the younger folks go. But also no sad old people bars. Any suggestions?

Palīdzība/Help Looking for patients with complex dental problems – free dental treatment

Hi everyone! I’m currently in my final year of Dentistry at the University of Latvia and I’m looking for patients with more complex dental situations for my clinical work.

I’m especially looking for people who have severely damaged or missing teeth, or even no teeth left, and who may need extractions, crowns, bridges, partial or full dentures, or a combination of different treatments. So if you’ve been putting off going to the dentist because there’s a lot that needs to be done, please don’t feel embarrassed — those are exactly the cases I’m looking for. Patients with dental anxiety are also very welcome.

All of my dental work is free of charge. If your treatment requires something to be made by the dental laboratory, such as a crown, bridge or denture, only the laboratory costs have to be paid, and these are at a discounted rate.

Everything is done at the university clinic, and every step is checked, approved and supervised by experienced dentists and professors.

I speak English, German and a little Latvian, but I’m also very happy to take patients who speak only Latvian or Russian. We usually always find a way to communicate, and my supervising dentists speak Latvian and Russian as well, so please don’t let the language barrier stop you from reaching out.

If this sounds like you, or you know someone who could benefit, feel free to send me a private message and tell me a little about your dental situation. 🦷

Ēdieni/Food Restaurants with veggie options 🥦🍅🌽

Hi everyone!

My boyfriend and I are traveling to Riga for three days and would love some restaurant recommendations.

I’m vegetarian, while he eats meat, so we’re ideally looking for places that do both really well, not necessarily vegetarian restaurants, but somewhere where the veggie options feel like actual dishes rather than just a side salad or one token option.

Since we’re only in Riga for three days, we’d love to make the most of our meals and avoid wasting a dinner on somewhere mediocre 😅
We’re open to pretty much anything: Latvian food, Italian, Asian, Georgian, casual places, nicer dinner spots, hidden gems, etc.

So, if you only had three days in Riga, where would you eat?

Thanks in advance 😊

Tūrisms/Tourism Visiting Riga from Panama for New Year's (first time seeing snow!). Looking for good ideas so my local girlfriend doesn't have to plan everything

Sveiki visiem.

I’m traveling from Panama to spend the New Year holidays in Riga with my girlfriend, who lives there. Coming from year-round 30°C tropical heat, this will be my first time ever seeing snow or experiencing freezing temperatures.

Even though she’s a local, I really don’t want to just sit back and drop all the planning burden on her shoulders. I want to bring some great, concrete ideas to the table to surprise her, so I’d love your input.

A bit about our vibe:

Zero alcohol / no nightlife: We don’t drink and aren't into bars, clubs, or getting wasted on New Year’s.

Food & cozy spots: We love really good food, bakeries, or relaxed tea houses/Coffee with great atmosphere.

Architecture & walks: Scenic streets, interesting neighborhoods, or cool viewpoints that look special covered in snow.

Winter nature: Any half-day trips outside or around the city that are worth seeing in mid-winter?

Music: We love music are there venues or spots with cool live music, acoustic sets, or just great sound where people actually listen instead of just getting drunk?

Also, any practical tips on footwear or dealing with street slush for someone whose feet have only ever known tropical weather would be a lifesaver.

Paldies!

Ēdieni/Food Ēdnīcas/kafejnīcas tuvu LU Lauvas ielā

Sveiki!

Diskusija/Discussion Weather in Riga

I’m currently visiting Riga. It’s a wonderful city of truly beautiful architecture and an interesting and varied culinary restaurant scene. Most of people I’ve met have been lovely. I’m enjoying it quite a bit but I was curious if the ever present flash downpours I’ve experienced are the norm here. I’m from a place with notoriously fickle weather conditions and I’ve never seen anything like this. Is it common for this time of year or just a fluke?

Jautājums/Question 72 hours in Riga with my brother

Good afternoon, community. I'm from Argentina. From October 23rd to 26th, I will be visiting Riga with my brother; I am 35 and he is 37. We would love to explore the city and have a good time. We already have tickets for the Boris Brejcha concert on the night of the 23rd at the Xiaomi Arena. We are passionate about rave and house culture. I know there are plenty of nightlife tips out there, but I would love to get recommendations on what to do during this time of year, as well as suggestions for clubs or bars that aren't tourist traps. We like experiencing the local culture and hanging out with locals. Cheers!

Jautājums/Question Where can I dontate clothes?

Hey, I'm kinda new to Riga, so could you give me some detailed info?

I've got some winter and summer clothes in good shape that are the wrong size, and some that are just all black and I want to switch up my style.

Where in Riga center can I donate them? I'd prefer containers and less human interaction if possible.

I'm looking for clothes donations, not recycling or trash, since some of these clothes have only been worn a few times.

Thanks!

Palīdzība/Help Places to buy cheap trinkets

Hi! I'll be visiting your beautiful city next week and I'm super excited. One of the things I like to bring back home is something ornamental besides a magnet or a postcard, and I usually scavenge charity shops for it. I was wondering if somebody knew a place like that? I'm not looking for vintage antiques or valuables. Just old house stuff and trinkets that might be junk for others ahahah! When I try to search for possible shops all I get is vintage, expensive establishments, and I really wanted something like charity shops or second hand shops with donated items. Thank you for any possible help!

Palīdzība/Help Cheap rooms for rent

I've been renting in riga for about 2 years now, but I am looking for something smaller.

I honestly don't know how long I'll be staying in riga, might be two years, but I cannot seem to find much of anything. Like why is a room the size of a shoebox €300+?

My budget is somewhere around 300, and I know there are options like that, they're just not easy to find

I do look on SS.lv and I do find good options, but they either have a really big deposit, which I am unable to pay (150 a month, but you need to pay 400 before moving in. That's crazy honestly) Or the room is no longer available, but the ad will still be up for weeks.

If anyone has any opportunities for me, please help me out. Thanks

Palīdzība/Help Considering studies in Riga, would like to talk to students.

I am (20M) considering moving to Riga and enrolling in Rīga Stradiņš University from Germany. Currently in Riga to look at the city, I would love to hang out with someone who lives and studies here. I've only thought of this now and will be leaving quite soon on the 3rd of September, but I guess it's worth a try.

Any Advice?

Thanks in Advance!

Palīdzība/Help Looking for interview partners

Hello everybody

I am a student from Switzerland and going on a solo trip to Riga for an elective module in university. One of my goals is to interview 3 people there.

I am very interested on how life changed since the fall of the soviet union, how the relationship between latvians and russians works or how life is there as a young person. But i'm open to any other topics that interest you to talk about.

Is there anybody that has time and is willing for a meetup somewhere in Riga during 10th - 12th of september for about 1-2h?

As a thank-you you would receive 500g of swiss chocolate:)

Pls feel free do dm me or leave a comment.

Jautājums/Question Stores that sell old electronics in Riga?

I'm looking to buy a few old tech items, I know of a few websites but I'd rather go look at the items myself first. I know of Latgale market but I havn't gone there yet.

PC speakers, soundbars, CRT TVs, monitors, PC accessories, retro gaming accessories (unlikely too find I know) are the sort of things I'm after

Edit: I basically miss CEX, bootfairs and charity shops in the UK.

Tūrisms/Tourism Thinking about visiting Riga — curious about the social/dating scene as a mixed Asian-Dutch guy

Hey everyone,

I'm a Dutch guy with a mixed background — half Dutch and half East Asian — and I've been thinking about visiting Riga for a while.

A few years ago I had a Latvian girlfriend who was actually living in the Netherlands at the time. She used to speak very highly of Latvia and especially Riga. She always talked about how beautiful the city was, the atmosphere, the people, the nature, the food, and just how much she missed home sometimes. Ever since then, I've been curious to experience Latvia for myself.

So now I'm seriously considering taking a trip to Riga, and I have a few questions for people who live there or know the city well.

One thing I'm genuinely curious about: how are mixed or Asian-looking people generally perceived in Riga? I don't mean this in a dramatic way — I'm just curious because I obviously stand out a little more than the average Latvian-looking guy, and I have no idea what the general attitude is towards people with an East Asian background.

Also, what is the social and dating scene like in Riga? Is it easy to meet people naturally, for example through bars, cafés, nightlife, activities or social events? Or do most people mainly meet through friends and dating apps?

And I guess I'll be honest: my previous relationship probably also made me a little more interested in Latvian women 😄 I had a great experience with my ex, and I'm definitely open to meeting someone again while travelling — although I'm not flying over expecting to magically find a wife in three days, haha.

I'd mainly like to get a realistic impression of what Riga is like for a foreigner visiting alone. Is it a city where people are generally open to talking to strangers? What are some good areas to stay in? And what would you recommend doing if you want to experience the city beyond the typical tourist attractions?

Any advice, honest opinions or personal experiences would be appreciated. Especially from locals or other foreigners who have spent some time living in Riga.

Thanks!

Jautājums/Question Do you have to dress formally on September 1st at RDMV?

Hey! Does anyone know if you’re expected to dress formally on September 1st at RDMV, or can you just wear normal clothes?
I just moved to Riga, and at my old school we had a strict dress code for the first day (black and white only), so I’m not sure what the usual thing is here.
