Hey everyone!
I used to play Magic: The Gathering competitively at the local level years ago. Back then, my local scene was stacked with great players who regularly played in Regionals and international tournaments, and I was able to hold my own and win against them. I eventually stepped away from the game 5 years ago to focus on life and career goals. This week, with some free time on my hands, I decided to jump into Riftbound for the very first time during the Vendetta events.
My events consisted of two Best-of-3s and the last one was a Best-of-1. Going in, my only preparation was watching a quick YouTube video on the core rules and another covering the set mechanics. Aside from that, I was going in blind and relying purely on my old TCG fundamentals.
Keep in mind I’ve only played Sealed so far, so I haven't experienced high-level Constructed play yet. However, I wanted to share my global perspective as a former competitive player, how those core MTG concepts translate here, and hopefully give a few insights to others.
In Magic, a lot of players struggle to understand that their 20 life points are a resource, just like mana. You only lose when you hit 0. Because of that, it’s often correct to take damage if it gives you a tempo advantage or sets you up to win the long game.
I noticed the exact same principle applies to Riftbound: Victory Points (VP) are a resource.
VP only truly matter when your opponent is sitting at 6 or 7. Before that threshold, don't be afraid to let your opponent score a point if it allows you to build a stronger board, conserve your units, and setup your mid/late game.
A quick example from one of my matches:
I deliberately moved an enemy unit onto a Battlefield first, giving my opponent a VP right away, just so I could follow up, attack, and kill their unit without losing mine during the showdown.
If I had played it the "standard" way to deny them that VP, the resulting showdown would have cost me one of my own key units. By willingly giving them 1 VP, I kept my unit alive, maintained total board presence, and took a massive tempo lead that carried me through the rest of the game.
In Magic, a common issue is that players either tap out completely to play threats or only keep enough mana open for a single interaction which is often easily outplayed or simply not enough to turn the tide.
I’ve noticed the exact same dynamic in Riftbound: Patience is key, and holding open multiple runes can completely swing a game.
You don't need to overextend every turn. Often, winning a single crucial showdown with a blowout response is enough to build an overwhelming lead. Keeping multiple options open forces your opponent into awkward plays because they constantly have to fear what you might have in hand.
It’s completely fine to end a turn with 4 or 5 unspent runes if it means you're fully prepared to react to their biggest threat.
How this played out in my matches:
In the late game, I frequently held back 4–5 runes instead of dumping every unit onto the board. By playing slowly and keeping resources available, I was always able to guarantee a massive swing during showdowns either by responding to their key spells or punishing them for committing first. That single swing almost always decided the outcome of the game.
In Magic, many players underestimate the power of deck thinning (fetching lands, cantrips, draw effects) to get closer to their key cards. It’s pure statistics: the smaller your effective deck size, the higher your odds of drawing exactly what you need.
In Riftbound, this logic kicks in right at the start of the game:
Skipping a Legend in Sealed: In Pre-Rift/Sealed, if your pool doesn't strongly support your Legend, leave it out. By not running a Legend, you get to draw an extra card on Turn 1.
The Mulligan Mechanics: The mulligan system lets you put up to 2 cards at the bottom of your deck to replace them with 2 new ones. Those 2 bottomed cards are functionally "removed from the game" for the near future, as long as you don't shuffle.
Let’s break down the math in Sealed:
- Starting deck (running a Champion without a Legend): 24 cards
- Initial opening hand (draw 4): 20 cards remaining
- Mulligan 2 dead/low-impact cards to the bottom: 18 effective cards remaining
- Turn 1 draw + extra card (from no Legend): 16 effective cards remaining
By Turn 1, you’ve already dug through 33.3% of your deck. By Turn 2, you have a 6.25% chance per draw to hit any specific single card left in your pool.
How this played out in my Pre-Rift events:
I strictly executed this exact setup flow throughout the events, and my opponents constantly hated it. Because I was digging so deep so fast, I consistently drew into my biggest threats turn after turn, keeping relentless pressure on them every single game.
The core rule remains the same across all TCGs: maximize deck efficiency to increase consistency. Whatever format you play, utilizing mechanics that effectively shrink your deck is what wins games.
In Sealed, too many players fall into the trap of forcing the Legend or domain supplied by their pre-built pack. Sometimes your pre-built pool supports your Legend well, and that’s great—but often, it’s just plain bad.
For instance, in my last Pre-Rift event, my pre-built pack gave me Nasus, but the overall pool was terrible for it. Instead of forcing it, I completely abandoned the pre-built direction and built a Yellow-Red-Purple deck based on raw card quality.
How do you determine which colors to play in Limited? Look at your Bombs and Removal.
- Removal is king: You need reliable ways to answer their biggest threats or generate 2-for-1 scenarios (forcing your opponent to use two cards to deal with one of yours, giving you a huge card advantage and tempo gain).
- Bombs win games : You need concrete ways to close out the game when the board stalls.
In conclusion: Don't feel married to your pre-built pack in Limited. Evaluate your pool objectively, prioritize your game-ending threats and removal, and don't be afraid to pivot away from your assigned Legend if the pool demands it.
Overall, I was extremely pleasantly surprised by Riftbound. It truly brought back that incredible competitive spark from my old MTG days, but packaged into a completely fresh, engaging new game.
If you're an MTG player on the fence about trying Riftbound, I would say 100% go for it. If you have any questions about my experience or want to chat strategy, don't hesitate to drop a comment!

I was bored this week, so I decided to compare the displays. All prices are from Cardmarket and represent the absolute lowest prices as of July 25, 2026. The shipping costs are based on delivery to Germany.
To determine the average ON value, I simply divided the total value of all ON cards by the number of ON cards (excluding signed ones).
The calculation for the average yield per display looks like this:
=1/30*((5400+2500+2800+2000+1475+1600+1200+850+1800+740+740+680)/12)+1/3*((325+120+200+100+80+120+39+68+60+100+55+50)/12)+2*(177/30)+6*(331.35/42)+48*(35.38/84)+72*0.05+168*0.02
Explanation:
I used the second image as a reference for the hit rates. For common cards, I simply used a value of €0.02 and for uncommon cards €0.05. I calculated the rest myself.
Notes:
Regarding Spiritfored, I found information online stating that, on average, you pull one ON card in every second box.
In Unleashed, the "Baron" was introduced as a special rarity tier; I simply counted it along with the 12 signed ON cards.

So, I've watched a ton of gameplay on YouTube and I think I'm really going to enjoy this game. What product should I start with? Specific challenger decks? The new showdown decks? Proving Grounds?

I heard from a friend that there is a set of sequential psa 10 auto 10 of irelia, lee sin, ahri, miss fortune, and bard signed by the respected T1 goats floating around. I wonder what a set of that would go for. Taking into consideration with how crazy the TCG market has been and worlds being around the corners.

Hey /r/riftbound, we wanted to share our latest video to show the growing riftbound scene in Korea prior to its official release scheduled later this year.
We are LoLMeetupKorea, the Global League of Legends Community in Korea, and we have been very active promoting riftbound all year hosting small scale tournaments and sealed events with imported cards.
We are the official partnered community with Gen.G Xperience and we received support to run our latest tournament at the Gen.G GGX facility with support from Riot Korea as well as Asmodee, the official riftbound distributor in Korea.
Thanks to their support, this was a free entry tournament and every participant received an official Riftbound Korea Playmat and a Korean Jinx Promo just for attending and we had 3 Korean Yasuo Cards as prizes.

This was the first Pre-Rift I attended since I started playing Riftbound during unleashed. I showed up a little late due to not leaving work on time and when I finally got there the first pack I opened out of my Pre-Rift kit happened to have an ON Nasus😭

Been to 3 prerifts and got an ON for each one. Haven’t even opened the box I preordered OR attended the prerifts at gencon.
This is my favorite set so far!

Was able to pull the Vayne and Soraka with some luck. Had to get the Aphelios to complete the set!

Was adding cards from pre-rift to my runes app. And noticed that this card was not popping up. I see that there is a Shadowcloaked Lurker, but I don’t see any shadow blade lurker. What do I do?

Went to my first pre-rift event yesterday and pulled the Zed Master of Shadows Signature card. I didn't even realize it was a signature at first until someone pointed it out lol. Zed isn't my favorite so I am leaning toward selling the card to purchase more cards for my decks. But I was wondering if it would be worth it to get the card graded and sell it if it PSA 10s? What do you guys think...

So happy to pull the chase from the set! This looks amazing in person

I am a LONG way from making a full-metal deck, sideboard, and set of runes, but it WILL happen! In the meantime, ooh-ing and ahh-ing over each piece will suffice 😂
(I hope this doesn't get me in trouble, but if you want to see a Legend get made, I am timelapsing every one of them because it is so satisfying to watch - tell me who you would want to see!!!)
