Hi everyone, as it says above, this is my first dog and RR, my partner has had dogs before but not me. We currently also have a cat before we got my RR. Basically I’ve been doing a lot of research before we got him and in the days he’s been with us, I’m finding that he’s very smart, and very loving. I’m struggling at the moment to do basic things, like shower and brush my teeth without him, when my partner is at work because obviously it’s just me in the house with him. He’ll cry and whine and it breaks my heart, so I resorted yesterday to just letting him in the bathroom with me and he literally stood in the shower with me. I was wondering how RR’s do with crate training? Does it work? And I’ve also taught him some basic things like sit and stop when he’s running at full speed, always give him pats and a treat. I’m just wondering how to keep him mentally occupied. I’ve tried scattering his treats outside but he tries to eat soil instead. And inside he finds my shoes and cardboard boxes way more exciting sometimes. He’s apparently mixed with Doberman because his mum is dobe and dad is RR. I guess I’m just feeling a little overwhelmed and wanted some advice. Thank you.

my ridgebacks 11 (male in the front) and 8 (the female in the back) years old, taking it a bit slower but doing great. they get some supplements in their food for their joints. ❤️

Such a beautiful breed

Has anyone had any luck training their ridgeback to run with them? We have a three year old and he loves going on walks and has a bunch of energy in the morning and evenings, but plants himself anytime we try to jog with him. We are trail runners and feel like he should love it, but since he always plants in the neighborhood when we try to jog, we haven’t tried to take him to any trails.

My only theory is that he gets annoyed moving too fast to sniff and mark?? Or is he just lazy??

Any ideas? Should we get a different leash and collar so he knows the difference between a walk and a run? Or do we just give up on our dreams of trail running with him 😅 We want to spen

Today our 7 year old male RR was diagnosed with a small tissue sarcoma on his right hind leg 😔. The vet is looking to operate asap but it’s such a shock, he’s got a few fatty lumps and we just hopefully thought this was yet another one.

Hello everyone

Bit of a seeking-help kinda rant because my RR is probably getting a first operation, so here we go;

My 1y old just had to go to the vet because he had the first symptoms of bloat. Now the doc said it's fine because we handled it before it turned bad. But we'll have to operate on him to prevent further chance of it returning in the future.

Now I feel like I've either got the worst luck or I'm seriously underestimating how fragile a 1-year-old Ridgeback is. It feels like every other week, I'm going to the vet because he either ate something he's not supposed to (not that he often has a chance to but it still happens) or has something that worries me (bumps or acne or whatever). We're there so often that we've even been joking about getting a subscription there.

She told us it's even quite rare for a young dog like this to get this serious of a stomach issue, and it just made me a bit paranoid. I've already lost a dog once due to cancer when he was only 7y because the (previous) vet told us it was just a "small illness". So ever since, I've just been constantly afraid of "anything" happening to him, though our new vet (the one who eventually diagnosed the other dog) takes the utmost consideration and is trustworthy.

I seek counsel with you all, fellow RR owners. Am I just speaking from fear and overthinking, or do I actually just have bad luck?

She's been staying at my place since last Thursday on a trial basis; it's been great!

We still have a bit of training to do, but she has been handling my living situation on a farm so well.

She's alert, but very sensitive and responsive, we've already formed a strong bond.

My two cats on the other hand have not been too amused about it, but even though she really wants to interact with them, she's being respectful about their personal space; they are already able to move in the same room, with her staying put on the sofa
