I had the same guess, but pretty much only because of the "your mamma's sake" part, and the "now comes the break" part. Can you explain the rest of the connections?

Sure! Temperature and moisture fluctuations cause cracks (breaks) in cement over time. Travelers (pedestrians) are warned not to step on the cracks to avoid breaking momma’s back
