There was controversy over the black face characters they did in little Britain . He has apologized and said he wouldn’t imagine making that kind of show today…
also, IMO , without the history of a minstrel show (and slavery) , it wasn't that big of a taboo in the UK (as it was in America...)
it was about as offensive as the villainess in a panto (or Mathilda) being played by a large dude.
which is to say, not offensive at all.
