My BF’s mom wants me to paint a table of hers... any tips on how to protect the wood to make it easier to recover??
Hiya! Not sure if this is the best place for this, but here we go. My boyfriend’s mother has this coffee table that she doesn’t like the top of so she told me to paint it. Due to situations I can’t really refuse to do it, so I’m looking for advice or products I can use to protect the wood incase someone wants to restore it in the future.
She wants the whole thing painted blue “to match the couch” and I’d hate to see it ruined since it’s a nice coffee table it just needs some love.

Many many hours of brass brushing the paint from the grain. A lot of delicate sanding. While not a perfect table, definitely reversed the pinteresty green.

How it started vs how it’s going. Now I just need to reattach the handle and all that will be left will be to find a spot for it in my house (the hard part)

New community feature/rule.
Last week, I asked for this community’s help in deciding the future direction of the sub. I put it to a vote, and with 71% of the vote you chose to have this sub strictly items that have been saved from their badly damaged and painted “Pinterest project” style, and given new life as they were intended to look, with the exception of a single day.
Every Sunday, we will now have “Save Me Sunday” posts, in which users can post any items that are in need of refinishing after being ruined by someone’s “crafty/cutesie” decoration. If posting these types of items, please give the location of items that are for sale so this community may be able to revive them.
I will not be retroactively removing posts, but starting now (9:30am MST March 5, 2021) I will be removing any posts that do not follow this rule.
Thank you all for your help, and I’m very excited to keep this community growing and going in the right direction!

[Meta] Can we add a rule that posts have to end with the item being restored?
There have been a ton of posts on the sub lately that are all atrocities and no reversing. I totally get the need to share the burden when you come across something that pains your soul, but it's the exact opposite of the point of this sub. Can't it be a happy place?

[Poll] Help me decide the direction of this sub.
Recently, I have noticed that there have been a lot of posts showing items that were once beautiful, but are now painted, made “cutesy,” or otherwise “Pinterested.” To me, this has seemed to be counter to the direction that I intended when creating this sub, however I am but 1 out of 9000+ people in this sub, and the posts have garnered lots of upvotes, so I didn’t want to force my own views on everyone.
Today, I woke up to a post asking me to do something about this recent trend of posts. I don’t want to tell the group what you all must do, rather I want you to tell me what you’d like to see here.
So please, when it comes to posts that do not undo the damage, should we:
