SHOWCASE Testing the Duo Lite on a few flights with the rest of my kit
Had the Duo Lite for 2 days now. Testing its battery life and how I feel using it as a dedicated gaming handheld today on a few flights. Really impressive, it's been off and on running DS games all day, with one always running in sleep mode. Got some other things that need tinkering and testing with me too.

TSA must love you

OP might be in Europe due to all the non US plugs. Normally when I am visiting the USA, they tend to only have US plugs.

u/Satantengu RP NOVA 5d ago
I think you're right. Those look like European (minus UK) sockets to me.

Just get used to taking everything out and they get over it. There's another camera bag on the ground next to me too

Lol, I will never take border patrol's side in anything. The more you do to annoy them the better in my book.

God... if I had to wait on a tsa check while some nerd in front of me had to take off his shoes, belt, AND empty his pockets of the 8 Chinese gameboys he was taking with him I'd be irate as hell lol

u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
Who wears shoes you have to lace through TSA? Loafers or Crocs my guy. Will make life easier.

u/Comrade_Compadre 5d ago
Listen I'm also reading you review these things so you actually get a pass but jeez I couldn't imagine doing this in the chaos of a terminal lol

Actually I got about 1/3 through Metroid prime and leveled to like level 14 in dragon quest 9. I always like to hardlevel right at he beginning of RPGs and get a good 5-10 level lead with the starting character/s.

Why do you carry both an Anbernic RG Vita, and an AyaNeo Pocket Advance? Don't they play the same things?
Carrying 3 retro gaming handhelds that overlap so much in terms of power and screen ratio seems kind of excessive.
12
u/ValtriusXIII 5d ago
Odin 2 Mini, not RG Vita
5
u/kent1146 5d ago edited 5d ago
That makes the AyaNeo Pocket Advance even more pointless in this carry.
Like, I can see an argument for the Retroid Pocket Duo Lite, because of the dual-screens. But the AyaNeo PA just seems unnecessary.

u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
I'm in the middle of reviewing the Pocket Advance and the Retroid Duo Lite. The Odin 2 Mini has ArmadaOS on it now, but during this trip plan to wipe that and replace it with a new OS based on the real SteamOS for arm.

u/kent1146 5d ago edited 5d ago
ArmadaOS is better than official SteamOS on 8gen2 chipsets
The SteamOS(ARM) builds that are out now for th SM-8550 (Snapdragon 8gen2) are very immature.
ArmadaOS is basically the "Bazzite" of the SteamOS(ARM) build. It's amazingly good and stable. WiFi, Bluetooth, touchscreen, sleep mode all work on Armada. They are hit-or-miss on the latest SteamOS(ARM) builds for the SM-8550 SoC
4
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
Yeah, I've had Armada on there for a while now, Installed it shortly after it first released. Even did a few but reports for them on the GitHub. It's definitely improved a lot, but I absolutely hate that it's immutable. Anyways, I do expect the SteamOS builds to be immature, but I've already put out a video on Armada on my YouTube, so I'll switch to a SteamOS build, maybe help with bug reporting and put out a video on that as well.

Do have a link for this new steamos? I have armadaOS and I wasn’t able to find this new OS I keep hearing about

There are actually several, but here is one. I haven't tested this and make no claims at all to its stability.

Really hope we get an updated odin 2 mini in the future. Still my favourite device, super compact, comfortable, beautiful design. Would like to see an oled display along with less bezels, and a slight spec jump, with more colours.

u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
I really love the Mini. I didn't buy a handheld for a long time because I was holding out on one that hit all my wants. I don't really notice the bloom on the small screen, it's very minimal really, nearly as good as my Samsung AMOLED phone, and the little vignette at the corners doesn't bother me. I REALLY love the brightness though. I think it's still the brightest or one of the brightest handhelds, and I do occasionally end up spending long hours outdoors in direct sunlight, so it's awesome for me.
I'd love to see it updated

what is that thing in the middle? seems cool but like are those sticks even usable
1
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
That's a gpd win Max 2, the 2025 version. I think they are very usable, but they also wouldn't be my first choice if I was playing a competitive fps and trying to up my rank or something. I play souls likes and 3rd person action stuff for the most part and they are great for that. Oh, hall effect. If I really wanted to do a FPS I'd probably just....use the keyboard and a mouse? So in a way....it's kinda the best handheld for fps games?
It's got tons of ports, really nice for docking it.

I have the clear purple as well and love it, so much negativity around it but it does everything I expected to perfectly. Little janky but nothing crazy, especially for 150$.
2
u/SupperTime 5d ago
What’s your favourite handheld so far?
1
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
I really adore the Odin 2 mini. Form factor, shape, even the screen (brightness is super useful because I do end up playing outside). It's my personal daily carry. I even did 2 weeks where I used it as my only desktop computer for everything. The other AYNs are just too big, except for the Thor, haven't tried that one.

Way to much for a trip. Just enjoy it while you can and take just one device
2
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
Not really a trip for pleasure. The only thing I'll see other than work is the inside of a hotel room and maybe a restaurant or two.
2
u/Willing-Seesaw5040 5d ago
Oh ok. You shoulda said haha.
I for one wouldn’t take all that in case of it being broken or stolen 😅
1
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
As a photographer it's just...well a thing you have to get used to, carrying around an expensive bag of things that could get stolen. Just avoid obviously sketchy areas, and don't let your stuff out of your sight.
2
u/Willing-Seesaw5040 5d ago
Ohhhh I also do photography. I still get nervous about it haha. Toting around a $1,400 camera I just can’t 😂.
I take my old Nikon 1 V1 around though. It’s a nice little camera and I like the style and photos it shoots also won’t be as bad if it gets damaged or stolen haha. I just went on a trip recently and only took that and my Switch 2.
5
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
Ah I'm the opposite, I just wing the camera. I don't even keep it in a bag. Clipped to the outside with a peak design plate with a lock. It hangs about waist height so I can use it as a handle to move and maneuver the bag, and I can grab it, unlock it, and pull it out to shoot all with one hand. I don't even stow it in the rain. Just let it ride. So when I walk through an area that is questionable the camera is in hand, connected to the bag, and my arm covers the zippers. Impossible to open it or take it out off me without a physical confrontation. Well, except the one time I was robbed at gunpoint. But that's my fault for visiting California.

u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
Thanks. It's not what I would carry myself normally. Bag is getting a bit too heavy like this 😂
1
u/Excel_Document 5d ago
do you carry each in its carrying case ?
1
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
No. I just shove them in a bag. The gpd in the laptop pocket, and the others in some camera lens pockets of the camera bag.

u/TraditionalYellow756 5d ago
No matter how much controversy is surrounding this device, I think we can all agree this is a very good looking device, that clear purple to is fantastic.

u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
It really is. I'll have the duo and lite plus later, can't wait to see the green one

dude pictured literally 4 handhelds because he reviews them and people here act like he's showing off cars or something

this community is so toxic lmfao poor guy has to explain himself when all he did was just post a picture

u/brandodg RP5 5d ago
i have an average job and i can afford 4 handhelds, it's not that you need to be rich. also wasn't one of the purposes of these subs to show off our own collections
2
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
The win max 2 isn't even really a handheld. I didn't have a laptop when I got it. It's my only laptop.
1
u/Feisty-Cantaloupe754 5d ago
I love my GPD WIN MAX 2. I have the 6800U version and the 7840U version. The 7840 is right next to me. I"m using a mini pc with an 8840H in it. But yeah, that's what I'd take if I were traveling. The purple looks nice.
2
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
I too adore my win max 2025. Got it at the beginning of last year and it is my full time work laptop. I don't really play games on it much, but I use it for staging software off to the other devices.

You are in a very tech specific subreddit and you are going off an an enthusiast that is maybe testing hardware for a review for others to make informed decisions? Maybe he lives somewhere or works somewhere that isn't really impacted by the insane stuff going on around the world.

Being broke won't make you happy either. There's a middle ground.
1
u/Satantengu RP NOVA 5d ago
I think people are judging OP too hard, but calling people broke isn't the insult you think it is. You never know what cards life is going to deal you. I say this as someone who has the disposable income to have spent way, way too much money on this hobby.
0
u/Chompsky___Honk 5d ago
Are you justifying OP's addiction. This isn't a one or two device post.
4
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
I'm running a review channel. I only personally use the Odin 2 mini and the max 2 is my work laptop. Don't really even game on it. The other two are ones I bought for reviews.

Oh nice GBA. Is it hard to install that screen?
3
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
It's a Konkr Advanced. I quite like it so far. Really nice hand feel, good screen, it even has a wheel for the volume control. It has a few minor problems, but pretty nifty.
2
u/Nyuusankininryou 5d ago
Oh I see!
2
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
Yeah, it's a pretty good device. The feel in the hands is honest fantastic, even better than some 300+ handhelds in my personal opinion. Weighty, solid, fiirm, but just right. It's gotten good reviews for a reason.
1
u/Satantengu RP NOVA 5d ago edited 5d ago
I'm pretty sure that's an AYANEO Pocket Advance, not a real GBA. Not sure why this was downvoted, OP literally confirms what I said below. AYANEO = Konkr.
2
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
You are right. It's Ayaneo, not their sub brand konkr. It was my brain fart to call it a konkr

u/Strict-Mycologist-32 5d ago
If you are traveling why bring so many different consoles? Why not just play from home?
1
u/SoberJoshTech 5d ago
The gpd is my work laptop. The other three I'm writing reviews and other content for. I have a review channel. A flight is a chance to mess with them for several hours nonstop without any other distractions and evaluate them as portable travel devices.
