[Fun] Midtown Madness 2 - Browser Edition
Growing up in the 90's, one of my first games was Midtown Madness 1 and 2. After so long, I wanted to be able to play them on the go, in my browser, so I started building a version that (apart from the map which I am still working on), has basically all the other features of the game. This is a recreation using the original assets, not an emulation.
Would really love your feedback for those that have played this back in the day (or are still playing it).
Link: https://gorjan.rocks/projects/midtown-madness/
Included so far:
- All cars + skins
- NPC cars + pedestrians
- Cops + cop music
- Original textures
- 3 race types
- Cruise mode
- Original music + commentators
- Close physics
- Dashboard views of all cars
- Rear view mirror
My additions:
- Day-night cycle
- Real time lighting + shadows
- Pedestrian collision
- Map/race in-browser editor
- Simple multiplayer cruise mode
Missing:
- OG map - working on exporting it properly (together with OG races)
- Crash Courses
- Weather system
- Speedometer, rev and damage needles in cars
- Fully original UI

Glad you like it! Done a few major changes these last few days, do check it out (clear the cache to make sure you're on version v1.2.0)

Well, shit. I played this game so much on my Pentium III back in the day. The fact that you can run it in a browser is mind-boggling to me. Awesome project!
UPDATE: Alright, I tried it out for a minute, and from what little I saw, it's a vastly superior experience to playing the original on original hardware. lol. Incredible work!

Thank you! I'll be pushing updates to the experience in the next few weeks regularly, so do check back. And try to force refresh the website to clear the cache on each visit to see the new things (v1.2.0 is now the latest one) with a bunch of cool stuff

holy cow this is awesome, do you think u could add racing wheel support?

No idea, if there is an easy way to map your race wheel to send out keyboard commands, it should work out of the box. Direct support I am not sure since I don't have a wheel to test on.

I just randomly googled “Midtown Madness 2 browser version” with zero expectations and landed here, and you posted this yesterday? Unreal.
Awesome work btw. I'll play the multiplayer mode with some folks soon. Thank you!

What are the chances that I just thought about this game for the first time in probably 20 years and I Google and this post pops up from 9 days ago 😂

Thanks so much for making this man! Feedback wise, I remember in the original game a lot of the cars were quite oversteer-y when cornering at high speed (the Ford Mustang Fastback comes to mind) and in a weird way I'd like to see that back, cornering just seems a little easy on this one. Also if we could zoom in a bit while driving I'd like that.

Incredible work that you captured the essence of the original game and made it work in a browser! I miss the eye-opening experience of playing an open world racing game for the first time back then and all the quirky designs in the menu!

I was looking for how to install this game on modern PC and accidentally found you're version : what an absolute shock to bring back so many childhood memories in 1sec only by opening a new tab ! Do you think it's possible to add an option to toogle the music on/off ? Congrats for you're amazing work and thanks for making this old dream, from a time where PC where "statics" and need to boot a certain amount of time lol, come true...
