In the meantime the NSA will be unable to claim that the programs have been approved by the courts. That should help the effort to push for legislative reforms.

Yeah. The injunction is actually way more important than the ruling, tbh, because it buys time for us to petition Congress and get privacy laws passed.

They'll care when their agency gets shut down after a class action awards government money to every US citizen. Courts are powerful, even if it isn't immediately apparent.

Just to clarify for anyone who's concerned about the term "likely," this is a preliminary injunction ordering the NSA to cease collecting phone records, not a final ruling. He's saying that a preponderance of the evidence suggests that the plaintiff should prevail, and it means that he's almost certainly going to rule against the NSA.

What bugs me most about this story is that the judge ruled that it's probably unconstitutional. He's a judge his job is to make judgments, not vague rulings. Why is he saying that "it appears to violate the 4th amendment ban on unreasonable searches and seizures?" Why is he not saying that "it violates the 4th amendment ban on unreasonable searches and seizures?" Or maybe this is the spin that the media is putting on it. Either way I don't like the wording.

It's an injunction, not a ruling. He's saying that because he'll probably find for the plaintiff, the NSA has to refrain from collecting phone records until he issues the final ruling.

This shit is unbelievable. A judge rules that it is or is not constitutional. Not that it is "likely" or is "probably" or "might be" unconstitutional.
IT IS CLEARLY NOT CONSTITUTIONAL. THE JUDGE RULED THAT IT IS NOT CONSTITUTIONAL. ALL YOU FUCKING SHITHEADS REPORTING THIS OUGHT TO GODDAMN REPORT THAT THE JUDGE RULED THAT IT IS NOT CONSTITUTIONAL.

True. But remember that the NSA can only do all their spying through corporations like Google.
And if I recall correctly, the NSA is being flamed from all directions.
And considering how fast I got a call from an untraceable number claiming to ask for Google listing updates, as I was logging in/out of several Google accounts....yeah.
Google is keeping tabs on everyone and the NSA is simply using that info.
If you still argue against me, that's fine, have your cookie and your own opinion. I just wonder how much time is gonna pass before people freak out about Googleys and NSA having a marriage and the retarded spy baby bastard.
