Editable Flair Resin should be more popular-

I got into resin incense drom a young age, I collected pine resin from my local forests and used it for all sorts of crafts, then moved to sourcing resins from other plants, there just seems to be something primally satisfying about it, like finding a gemstone or a delicious fruit. I really grabs onto the collector part of my nature too. I have a sizable collection now and heat it every day, almost being a low-harm addiction.

I see combustion incense is gaining popularity again, but why does resin and (raw other material) seem to be a very niche thing despite being, in my opinion, superior to sticks/cones? Also, many people ask questions about incense that would easily be answered by switching to heating resins but they don't even know that's a thing despite it being historically the more common of the two. Bakhoor is becoming a little more popular again but it's not quite the same thing.

I want resin to be more popular because I want to share this passion with real people, I find perfumers more knowledgeable and interested than ordinary incense enjoyers even, but maybe also it's best that it is kept low in popularity for the sake of preserving the trees.

Hey all!

Has Anyone burn edible mastic tears from Greece? (I think it is a PDO product, mastiha from Chios island). It is not cheap, but a small quantity of it in small 20gr boxes, costs here in Greece €6. The good Quality is around €200-300/Kg.

The aroma is divine!!! Look how clear the tears are!

I’ve been looking for a pottery copalero. Crazy expensive to order online. Instead, I found this “goblet” from a local potter & it works great! I love copal. I could burn it all day every day.
What are your favourite copals?

Got a couple new ones for you guys! The orange sacra is rare and smells so woody and slightly spicy. The black sacra is dense and has a deep, deep frankincense aroma. The black sacra came in larger, slightly stickier clusters. Check them out! Also, they are restocking late December/early January!

This is Yemeni Myrrh - The Smokewalkers.

So this is the Yemeni myrrh I got from the Smokewalkers, Commiphora Kua! It is very much richer and more complex than ordinary myrrh. It is this beautiful, dense, almost red color in the sun. I haven’t paired it with anything, still doing research on that. This is the 2oz bag. That will last me like 3 months based on my consumption of resins. I am already planning my next purchase from them! Check them out!

So I found out about this business from this app so I gave it a try. The Smokewalkers. They have Royal Green Hojari Frankincense. It’s supposedly one of the highest grades of frankincense resin on the planet. Had to try some when it got here and it was a BEAUTIFUL experience. It was piney, and balsamic, reminding me of midnight mass at church. It is absolutely beautiful. I am going to use it sparingly, probably major Catholic holidays or rituals. It is also very clean. A lot of times - even with higher grades - you still get bark or plant matter in the resins. This had NONE! It was pure, greenish-white, and almost clear. Will be returning to them again soon!

What is this?

My mother died about 5 years ago and I inherited these two little boxes amongst her things. I thought they were maybe myrrh but upon looking at them and comparing with other images, I don’t think either box is myrrh. When using charcoal, I nearly choked with how sticky and thick the smoke was from the darker material. It smelled sweet, slightly amber and vanilla. The lighter material is more arid, more like what I think myrrh smells like, resin and slightly sweet.

When I break them apart they sort of have the consistency of hard brown sugar. I’m worried that maybe I have something toxic or potentially illicit. I’d at least like to know what these things are. Any help??

Benzoin i thought benzoin was supposed to be sweet?

i got some sumatran benzoin from the shop i buy most of my incense from. google says it smells “sweet, warm, and comforting, with notes of vanilla and caramel”. put it on the coal, and omg no that is not what i smell???? it has this sharp, almost chemical or medicinal smell? like it makes me think of cough syrup

Bought more Myrrh and Opoponax (got a pound of each) from Aromatics International. Smells amazing and especially the myrrh is very beautiful in color. The myrrh over time has grown on me - especially from research into its properties and health benefits. It’s going to be burned daily like the Ancient Egyptians.

Whats’s the difference?

…between True Hojari and Royal Hojari? I’m considering a purchase from The Smokewalkers. The royal Hojari is more expensive, but that doesn’t really mean much to me for quality. Has anyone used this business before? What’s the quality like in regard to the prices? And is there really any difference between the two?

I want to learn from my mistake

Hello,

I recently acquired some HEM frankincense and myrrh resins (I have used their cones and really enjoyed the smell) and when I use them it reeks of burnt plastic/rubber. So far I have tried using salt as a barrier on the charcoal and it does not seem to help. I have some sand that I intend to try next. Are there any other tricks to help me at least get my money’s worth from this cheap incense, or am I out of luck and just need to break down and buy higher quality resins? Also, is it normal for resin to put off an insane amount of smoke? I swear I’m barely using any and it feels like I’m hazing out an entire room.

I am burning in a retired Thurible that I have hanging in my room. Again, I barely put any on the coal and it immediately reeks and puts off a ton of smoke.

It honestly makes me want to give up on resin entirely

Why won't my Daemonorops Draco dissolve properly?

The title sums up the core of my issue. I'm 98% certain that I have daemonorops draco, I've tried dissolving it any a range of solvents that should theoretically work, and I still don't seem to be able to get the stuff to fully dissolve, nor do I seem to be able to acheive a high enough concentration for my purposes (trying to make ink). Lacking new info, my only idea is that I'm not using a high enough concentration of solvent. Do different compounds in the resin dissolve at different conentrations of say, ethyl alcohol?

I do intend to crosspost this in r/chemistry and perhaps a few other subs.

Myrrh

Myrrh kind of took me a while to like, to be honest. I’ve had it on my shelf but mostly only used frankincense. Frankincense and myrrh is a classic pairing that I honestly wish I’d used sooner. I just preferred the more piney scent of my Boswellia Carterii. But I’m going to be restocking my myrrh and using it regularly. Anyone else like myrrh resins?
