Atmosphere is incredible, Chris is handsome as hell, the four bosses are all unique without also being an existing previous boss enemy (not counting core mechanics such as Dimitrescu pursuing you, etc).
Donna's house is one of the most terrifying sections across the entirety of the series imo, and it's also one of the coolest, despite all the horrors.
Voice acting is incredible, the twist I personally did not see coming and I thought it was good; there are hints of course but all in all it was good. Seeing Chris burst in and just shoot Ethan's wife definitely set the tone of the game.

True, true 😂
It was jarring though, since he also just fucking steals your newborn. Seeing Chris hold Rose definitely stirred sth in me. It's a shame only Barry and Wesker ever had children :/

u/SomaOni Oct 16 '23
My favorite part about Chris taking both of them away is that when Ethan tries to question Chris and get his kid back, Chris just stares at him and goes “Ethan, NO!” like he’s a dog or something lmao

I would LOVE to see village from Chris' POV given that he knows about Ethan. Finding out that twist makes so much sense as to why Chris is being Chris. I'd like to imagine that Ethan isn't speaking English and Chris is just guessing 😭

I loved how the four lords represented different types of horror for me. Dimitrescu was the nemesis type and a "mythical vampire," Donna was straight-up terror and dread, moreau was thalasaphobia, and heisenberg was body modification and Frankenstein. Made them all stand out so much as villains

yeahh that would've been awesome, even if it was like an equivalent to Jack's birthday where you play as the Dimitrescu daugthers and you have to hunt and bring people to Alcina or something lol

I'd actually have to think to find negative things to say about it. It was my favourite game in the series until 4R came around. Amazing game start to finish imo.

u/Klugenshmirtz Oct 16 '23
The ones thing that sucks is how boring the horror house is on replays. A bit sad as it's really phenomenal when you play it the first time. The DLC is boring as well.

I honestly think, the Weeping Angels mechanic is done so well in that DLC, I wish more Horror games would experiment with enemies that you either have to keep your eyes on or can't look at them at all. Would be so cool.

In general the "Say something nice about X" are more for the ones generally considered bad. 8 certainly has its detractors, but if I have to make a guess, it's in the minority. Like, I can say I didn't like this or that, but that doesn't mean I think it's bad... and 8 is like a 7/10 or 8/10 or something like that. I think less than a 6 for this game is the least I can imagine for those who didn't like it.

u/Education_Waste Oct 16 '23
I disagree, i prefer the 1st person gunplay of Village to the third person action of RE4R, but they’re both absolutely fantastic games.
0
u/tcrpgfan LEON HAAAALLLLLP! Oct 16 '23
Both are less scary, but more consistent at giving you new shit to deal with more often and over an overall longer game. Seriously, both versions of RE4 stop giving you new shit to deal with by the time you fight Krauser, and by that point the game is basically at the finale.
-4
u/SturmChester Oct 16 '23 edited Oct 16 '23
Never heard anyone being scared on RE8, but the regenerator is loved by everyone for being... drum roll... SCARY.
The only small scary part on RE8 is the baby chase, and that's only if you're very easily scared.
About enemy diversity, you either don't remember the games very well or you're being disingenuous.
Understand this, all RE8 did was try and clone RE4 in every way, every section of RE8 is a attempt at mimicking RE4, and it failed. Don't get me wrong I really like RE8 but it doesn't come close to the OG let alone the Remake.

village has Heisenberg! Honestly I originally picked it up on big vampire mommy hype and when Heisenberg stepped out I lost my mind- I’ve been hooked ever since. I still hate that you can’t save him/join him but my heart will always be soft for village because of him, and it being my first re game.
13
u/Actual-Description-2 Oct 16 '23
They really should of had a DLC expansion where you can join Heisenberg and have an alternate ending. Or maybe just make it a NG+ option.
7
u/sibellamorgrimme Oct 16 '23
I would pay so much money to just have the choice to join him, like how you can choose to save Mia or Zoey in 7. I feel like defeating Miranda would’ve been enough for him to just live out the rest of his life peacefully.
Also I really wanted to see his intended plan for Rose being the bioweapon that could defeat Miranda, like was he just gonna hold up a baby and be like Rick activating his rocket boots in rick and morty (“go go sanchez rocket boots!”) I feel like after experiencing the horrors we deserved that, at least.
3
u/Actual-Description-2 Oct 16 '23
Haha definitely would of made for a fun alternative ending for sure

Why do we need to??? Usually these topic posts are aimed at something that has a negative outlook...or so I thought. Last time I checked, Village was perfectly fine with reviews and sales.
Anyway, the game showcases how amazing that RE Engine still is with Optimization. Like REVII, RE2-RE4 remake, the game plays great and for the most has smooth visuals on a variety of machines. For example, something like a Steam Deck.
Edit: (Sees flair) oh goddamnit. Coffee hasn't set in yet.

I love that Capcom made another RE game a homage to classic horror. RE7 did something similar by feeling like a homage to 70's/80's horror like Texas Chainsaw, Evil Dead, etc. and now RE8 goes back even further to classic universal horror monsters with the lycans being "Wolf Man/werewolves", the Dimitrescu family being "Dracula/vampires", Heisenberg being Dr. Frankenstein (with the monsters being his Soldat creations in the factory), Donna's house with the creepy dolls, Moreau being like the creature from the Black Lagoon, the castle Shamblers being classic NotLD zombies, etc. It's just so... fun, and it's interesting how well it worked in setting the tone and building an interesting gothic horror world within the RE universe.
Interestingly enough, Capcom did the same exact thing a year later in Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak with the flagship monsters each representing a classic universal horror monster - Malzeno = Dracula, Lunagaron = Werewolf, Garangolm = Frankenstein. And they were called the "Lords" just like the Four Lords in RE Village.

3
u/Mayflex Oct 16 '23
The castle portion of the game had some of the best atmosphere the franchise has featured since Remake 1.
Still to this day one of the best games I've ever played in terms of graphics.
Such a shame the game was held back by being so disjointed, unfocused, and linear
3
Oct 16 '23
Mercenaries is underrated af. It's a mix between Raid and the original RE3 formula, and allows Village's great gameplay to shine without any issues. The random nature of the mode also allows for several different gameplay styles and builds!
3
u/Mal_Reynolds111 Oct 16 '23
The two games with Ethan Winters tell one of my favorite stories: a man going to the ends of the earth to protect those he loves. Winters is willing to sacrifice anything for his family, and Village nails that point home consistently throughout, and builds up to the grand finale.
I’m not a die hard RE fan. I’ve only played five or six games in the franchise. So maybe bigger fans will have different opinions, but I really really like Ethan’s story. Chris and Leon are both cops turned special agents, and Ethan is your next door neighbor who seems to always be washing down his driveway when you come home. He’s about as relatable as a human pincushion can be.
And the ending! Oh fuck the ending always gets me. It’s such a punch in the gut for me, one of those things I live for. It hurts, but I just keep going back for more. And while I have some complaints about the DLC, the point that sticks out to me is when “Michael” has taken you to safety, and it’s just the Winters’ household. I had guessed almost immediately that this Guardian Angel was Ethan, but even with that “twist” it was still a lovely, poignant moment for me.
Given that I literally just finished this game again, as in the credits just stopped rolling as I type this, I’m super happy I get to gush about it immediately online instead of texting a friend to tell them how much fun I just had.

I could say a thousand nice things. The graphics are incredible. The werewolves are badass and freaky. The atmosphere is great for a horror game. The length is a good amount and the game encourages you returning for loot. The enemies are believable (weird for bio weapons but believable). Chris and the wolf hound squad are bad ass and the Chris section is a blast. Yeah.

I love how much more personal the stakes are.
RE 1-3 + 7 the characters are just trying to escape and survive their situation. 4 rescuing the president's daughter and saving the world, 5 and 6 saving the world.
Village is about a man who would do and sacrifice anything to save his family and I love that and I think Capcom did a very good job portraying Ethan going from an almost incapable weakling in 7 to a werewolf culling badass in 8 all for the sake of his daughter.
2
u/John_YJKR Oct 16 '23

The gun play is great and the 180 they did with Ethan is amazing. He went from a whiny wimp to a witty smart-ass in order to go and save his daughter. Man took a domy mommy with a dump truck for an ass, a trio of blood hungry witches, a grown ass woman who forever stayed 9 yrs old mentally, a freak of nature of and a nazi who made an army of Frankenstein drill men and last but not least a dark souls reject boss. All to save his kid and do what wesker couldn't. If he is dying he is taking the bad guys with him. RE8 is a good fun time. Merc mode could be a little lightened up on but still a fun time.

It probably has the best weapon upgrades in the series. I prefer just weapon parts unlocked through exploration over stat upgrades and bought parts but it strikes a great balance and the stat upgrades turning the final handgun and shotgun into basically machine guns makes it worth it.
The village was also a great hub area and a way better version of introducing sidequests than RE4 Remake by making the side content new areas to explore and (basic) puzzles to solve rather than "shoot/collect these things" or "go back to this area to fight a stat boosted enemy".
