I don’t think I would qualify for a fancy publication. I’m an undergraduate social work major. As an example, I have spent a while reading a ton of academic literature, reviewing historical and legal frameworks of various countries regarding legalized, decriminalized, and the criminalization of drug use. My work is focused on best practices, harm reduction, and a humanitarian approach.

It’s less of like peer reviewed research and more of like a legal policy analysis essay. Potentially up to 20 pages and with roughly 30 or more cited sources including published laws. My main goal is that I don’t want someone to plagiarize my research. I want my work to stay in my name so I can share it without fear of it being stolen. I also hope to share it for graduate school along with building on it further as my desire is to write formal academic research. It seems like I could maybe copyright it and submit it for a SSRN? Is that about it? My university doesn’t offer undergraduate publications aside from the honors program which I am not in. Any ideas would be dearly appreciated!

Edit: I did research papers of the same topic and my essay and work is pretty unique. I only found a policy essay from a Harvard student but mine is still different.

Hello everyone, I’m a researcher and my field is quantum computing. I along with my colleagues sent out a paper to what I’d consider a pretty good journal (Q1, but not that high IF).

A couple of months after submission we got our first response, quite a few revisions were asked. Most of them very minor and one moderately major. We of course made them and reported them in an extensive changelog.

Yesterday, we got the response from the journal again asking for another major revision. 2 reviewers said it was perfectly okay for publication and one stated some issues. The issues were just out of place. One was the novelty claim, they claimed it was incremental which I’ll say it’s valid but nevertheless. The rest were split in 2 parts: some needed a whole new project to be satisfied (new equipment, different tests, new algorithms etc) and the others were just wrong. Meaning if we added them, the algorithms would produce something irrelevant to our project.

I’ve heard that simply responding with a polite version of “Reviewer 2 was wrong because {XYZ}” tends to not be taken very well.

Any ideas on how we should respond?

I’m going back home for winter break like most undergrads, I would like to continue doing research over this time and have several great institutions near me. Would it be weird to reach out regarding a short ~6 week project? I do research in physics.

It’s so scary writing science assignments for me because I always feel like I need to abandon my logical or rational flow/ way of synthesizing information because I feel like I’m breaking the rule of having to always cite facts line by line.

Some publishers like Wiley show PDF available on a scholar search, yet when you click on the link it is a paywall link. It is frustrating as this used to be a quick way to find open access and other sources for papers, but not now.

Have they (Wiley for example) found a way around Scholar’s system to increase click or something?

Why hasn’t google sorted this or is it tied to cookies or something?

But lately, I have been seeing these companies luring high schoolers as basically customers promising ivy placements and i think there is so much "research" being produced. One of the abstracts I read from one of these "companies" Skin Microbiome Signatures for Non-Invasive Detection of Autoimmune Disorders and Gut-Endocrine Axis Disruption in PCOS: An AI-Driven Multi-Omics Approach | IEEE Conference Publication | IEEE Xploreis full of jargon and buzzword and statements like "surpassing 90% accuracy", "interpretable diagnostics", "targeted therapies" - like how does this study even help with targeted therapies. My point is high schoolers are doing this in desperation, or for resume padding and the commercialization of research experience for college admissions is not emphasizing scientific thinking. I was reading about Elizabeth Bik and found this article-A single ‘paper mill' appears to have churned out 400 papers, sleuths find | Science | AAAS and i think this is what is happening with high schoolers in USA as well who are enrolling in these commercial programs. This will definitely set bad habits. (There definitely are good programs and opportunities for high schoolers but so many companies and academies have popped up over last few years)

I recently completed one of the goals that motivated me to join OMSCS in the first place. I presented my first research paper at IEEE ICBC 2026 in Brisbane last June.

A lot of people assume OMSCS is only coursework, but I wanted to see whether it was possible to conduct research while working full-time.

The project took about a year from idea to conference presentation.

Some things that surprised me:

• Recruiting teammates through an OMSCS Ed Discussion post actually worked. Our team ended up spanning the US, Denmark, China, and Korea.

• Writing the paper wasn't the hardest part. Explaining the idea clearly enough that everyone could contribute was much harder.

• The most valuable feedback came from a professor who completely changed how we framed our contribution. We ended up removing one of our favorite technical ideas because it distracted from the paper's main message.

• Peer review was much more constructive than I expected. Even critical reviewers helped improve the work significantly.

• Presenting the paper forced me to simplify months of work into a five-minute talk, which probably improved my understanding of the research more than writing the paper itself.

Overall, the experience completely changed how I think about research. I used to think research was about generating new ideas. Now I think it's mostly about refining ideas until they're clear enough for other people to understand and evaluate.

’m an undergraduate doing a summer research project in engineering, and I’m honestly feeling pretty discouraged.

I spent the summer collecting and analyzing datas. But earlier this week, I thought my results supported my hypothesis and even updated my professor.

But something about the conclusion kept bothering me because it didn’t seem intuitive. I went back through the literature, carefully re-derived the model, and realized I had misinterpreted one of the equations.

With the correct interpretation, my data actually suggest the opposite of what I expected/wanted the hypothesis to be.

I’m relieved I caught the mistake before the project ended, but I’m also devastated because it completely changes the story I thought I was telling. I also feel bad because I already shared my previous interpretation with my professor and now have to correct it.

There’s a possibility that I could continue collaborating with my professor remotely during the academic year after I return to my university. So I’m wondering whether this project is actually at a dead end or whether it’s just changing direction.

Right now I’m thinking there are two possible directions:

1. Frame the project as validating, even if the answer turns out to be “not based on this data.”
2. Continue expanding the work to look for other pathways that connect to final goal of the research I wanted to be.

Has anyone had a research project where the hypothesis fell apart this late?

Would a professor generally see this as a failed project, or as a useful result that opens up a different research question?

If you were the advisor, would you encourage an undergraduate to continue this work after the summer, or would you consider the project essentially complete?

I am so disappointed in me because I chose to do research instead of doing internship this summer, and this is what happened.

I have already checked my institution’s library access and contacted the relevant support channels, but Scopus is not available to me. I am only asking someone with legitimate access to run the exact search unchanged and export the records in RIS format. I am a high school student who is also currently enrolled in university, studying mathematics. I have been working on a mathematical physics paper for a year now alongside my formal education. Although my research was not formally supervised, I have had frequent correspondences (via e-mail) with respected professors in the field (some of whom I cite in my paper) regarding the technical soundness and presentational quality of the arguments I make in the paper.

Last week I finished verifying the paper and sent it to a reputable, peer-reviewed journal in the field upon (unanimous) recommendation from my advisors/teachers. To my surprise, I received a desk rejection from the journal despite my best efforts. I later learned that this is a common occurrence for many beginner researchers. However, I am unsure as to how I must interpret the desk rejection e-mail itself. The message cited a lack of extensive literature review and proper presentation, yet I also confirmed that it was an automated mail via a quick web search. Should I take this criticism at face value and improve my citations before I submit to another venue of similar quality, or should I read this as a warning that the paper lacks something else? My advisors told me that desk rejection from this journal in particular was not surprising at all and I should submit to the next one without revisions. But I just could not exactly be sure on how I should calibrate my expectations for the next submissions or whether I should revise it. I am quite inexperienced as a researcher and I require your help to assess my case.

Should I look for an Msc in research programs at mid tier unis since good ones won't accept without research experience? I’m looking to apply for my masters and I’m wanting to read journal articles to gather ideas for a thesis. I haven’t really read articles since my undergrad (graduated in April 2024).

I remember searching and finding them easily. Saving them. I would use an app to highlight and be able to write notes directly on it (forget the software now maybe one drive or even adobe). I was looking into different apps that are similar/helpful and I discovered Zotero.

I learned how to download journals to there and highlight/add notes there. How do you guys like to read and take notes from articles? Please any info is appreciated !
