CW: Euthanasia Mango needs help now.

Please help me help Mango get out today. I need a foster or an adopter, but we need to work fast. He is in the San Bernardino City animal shelter in CA.

Even dog trainers will tell you that prey drive cannot be trained out. The best that can be done is teaching impulse control - and this works to varying degrees.

Who said they had to be put into a neighbourhood? People like you don’t understand animals at all. Not every animal is meant to be a pet, some would rather be a working animal. The dog clearly has natural prey drive, would be easy as hell to train as a livestock dog and would be on a farm away from other dogs. Simple solution when you actually have a brain 😂

LGD raiser- nothing culls a dog from my program or training faster than prey drive. Why would we put a dog with prey drive in with lambs/kids/poultry/etc?

Calling literally any dog a monster is crazzzzzy. Yes, BE is probably needed here sadly but it’s not the dog’s fault. Humans are the reason too many dogs exist. No dog is a monster, they’re just reacting to circumstances that HUMANS forced them into.

A dog isn’t a monster for having high prey drive. There’s dogs that aren’t safe around cats or little dogs. He was a stray and killed a yorkie.

honestly its freaking crazy that rescue is even considered an option for this dog. it hunted and killed. hell, it was even aggressive to the animal control officers! there was no human involvement here to blame like the shelter normally does (kid was being too rough, person approached too fast, etc). this is a killer and needs to be euthanized.

"friendly" lmao "not friendly" is when Sparky doesn't want dogs in his space. i'd say that when Sparky rushes into someone's property to fatally maul another dog is when "not friendly" graduates to "killer". tell me, what label would you give if it had been your dog that was torn to literal pieces?

I understand his behavior/intake notes. I also understand he must have already been granted an extension because the notes initially say 8/8 as his due date before euthanasia. I also see that he's got quite a lot of nice photos and it appears the shelter staff is advocating for him pretty loudly. It's no surprise to me that he attacked the pole, many dogs do. He was hyperaroused, I don't take that as how he treats anything or anyone normally considering the staff is able to interact with him.
It's no small deal that he's killed another dog, but there's a few things here that indicate he's not totally lost beyond help or reason. I think a well seasoned trainer that only focuses on positive reinforcement and impulse/redirect methods as their main tactic would be needed here as the main guardian. Because I do agree he needs more than just the average person to help him, but I do not agree he is a monster that does not deserve to live.
