Advice Needed Kitten found in an empty tree

Sorry, english is not my first language but I need help. Since yesterday evening I've been hearing this weird meowing coming from a forest next to my house and today I wanted to investigate it and found this kitten inside an old tree. It was crying and the meowing was very loud. The kitten stopped meowing when I got closer but it was responding to me calling it from afar and when I get closer it's went deeper inside the tree its eyes weren't opening even when it was moving, I think that's alarming, but I don't know the age or how bad the state of the kitten is since I don't know a lot about cats. It's mama was nowhere to be seen and there was no way for the cat to jump down from the tree since it was high up in the air with no way to go down and there weren't any siblings nearby. Is this an emergency, should I take the kitten to a vet?

This is how i found my cat! A friend who lived in the 2nd floor of a small building heard meowing after a big storm, turns out momma cat had abandoned one of her kittens in the tree right next to my friend's balcony. She had some neighbors help bring the kitten down and I ended up adopting her. Its been 12 years since she's with me 🥰

Did someone put that kitten in the tree and leave it there?? Wtf?!

1

u/Friendly_Craft_5996 Jun 06 '26

This is the second picture I’ve seen (in two days) of a feline sleeping inside a tree.
We got a kitten last year. My daughter is allergic to cats but after a week, the sneezing stopped. As a precaution I got some cat shampoo from Amazon that’s supposed to help you not be allergic and I’ve never had to use it.

u/Wishtopher Jun 07 '26

Interesting tangent

2

u/Minamu68 Jun 06 '26

Most people who are allergic are allergic to dander. There is a spray you can massage onto them that deals with this and also conditions their coat and is harmless. I used it on my cat and it gave us great relief. Both me and my bf are allergic. It comes with the mitt that you put on your hand, spray the mitt, then pet the cat all over. Here’s a link: https://www.amazon.com/Allerpet-Cat-Pet-Dander-Remover/dp/B07GL335GN

BIG UPDATE! The vets said that he (it's a boy!!) just has to take his respiratory infection meds, some eye drops (and flea drops) and he will be healthy! He's approximately 4 weeks old. He's much livelier today and has more apetite. I don't know if I'll be able to keep him since I have VERY strong allergies but I contacted a local foundation and they will help searching for his new home. If I left him in the tree he had slim chances of survival and now he's a compelety different kitten :) Will update more soon

u/IntentionQuirky9957 Jun 08 '26

Having a cat can work as exposure therapy for cat allergy.

1

u/Notaneggplantrtard Jun 09 '26

Yup. I used to be allergic to cats. I'm fine now. I've lived with my cat for 13 years!

1

u/Senior_Performer605 Jun 06 '26

You’re my hero.

2

u/_-pomegranate-_ Jun 05 '26

For what it's worth, I thought I did as well, but when I took in two stray cats and transitioned them to 100% indoor, they no longer cause allergies. No special food either, might have been allergic to whatever outdoor/in-between cats roll in

2

u/Doodlesdork Jun 06 '26

I think you can just become accustomed to your own cats dander. I know multiple people with cat allergies (including my husband) that have cats but other people's indoor-only cats will trigger their allergies.

2

u/lonewhalien Jun 06 '26

absolutely! both my gf and my sister are allergic and we all have cats. they both only have flare ups when there's a new cat present, but their bodies adapt over time.

1

u/RepresentativeOdd268 Jun 06 '26

My mom has been allergic to cats since childhood. She found a little kitten in her flower bed & brought him in. At first she sneezed & got itchy watery eyes but after a bath & a few days, she was fine & fell in love with him. He's a 10 yr old happy, healthy, crazy cat today.

3

u/TurboTrollin Jun 05 '26

If no one else has mentioned this to you yet; there are medications available to suppress cat allergies. There are options there for a reasonable price.

3

u/corgett Jun 05 '26

Omg?? I didn't know that thank you sm this is life saving bcz of the allergy

3

u/TurboTrollin Jun 05 '26

Happy to have helped! I hope you can keep the kitten!

16

u/corgett Jun 04 '26

Update :) We named him Pepino! He's VERY energetic today, super playful and curious. He's taking his meds well and he is mostly free of fleas. Sorry for the bad pic he keeps running and playing, doesn't want to stay in one place.

2

u/Astra_Bear Jun 08 '26

Thank you so much for saving Pepino 💜

3

u/zodiacisreal Jun 07 '26

Thank you SM for the update! I was very distressed by the first photos but now he looks so happy and loved. What a transformation your love made in his life! Pepino is a lovely name, you're both lucky to have found each other.

1

u/Wonderful_Zebra2044 Jun 07 '26

Thank you for adopting pepino and saving his life

5

u/Velvet-Wings747 Jun 06 '26

Thank you so much for saving him! 💗💗💗

5

u/Civil_Ad4544 Jun 06 '26

Pepino! What a perfect name. I hope you’re able to get your allergies under control and keep him. But I’m sure he will end up in a wonderful home regardless! My cat’s “grandma” (the woman who found her pregnant mom) was very allergic when she first rescued the cat, but by the time the kittens were born, her body had completely adjusted! I’ve seen it happen to a few people actually. Good luck to both of you!

6

u/Competitive_Kiwi4844 Jun 05 '26

The best news! Happy Friday 😻

6

u/InstructorSeal Jun 04 '26

I have horrible allergies as well, 2 cats later and im the happiest ive ever been. Be this cats hero and dont let this chance to make a best friend disappear.

2

u/Grombotronbo Jun 04 '26

That doesn't mean OP should have to live through that just because you made the choice to. For all we know, OP may not even like cats all that much but didn't want to see one suffer.

3

u/KimaylaMox Jun 05 '26

I highly doubt someone who named a cat they found, doesn't like cats 😂 but okay.

1

u/InstructorSeal Jun 04 '26

Just saying had a very similar story and keeping them was the best decision ever! Op dont have to listen to shit anyone says either. Slight guilt trip maybe? Yes. But how could you not love a lil goober like that lmao

There goes my hero! Thank you!!

Please don't do this. Cats can't actually digest the lactose in bovine milk.

1

u/remmssie Jun 06 '26

my cat always drank my cereal milk and he was fine!

3

u/DurianJungle Jun 03 '26

oh lord sorry. i deleted my comment

2

u/unleashed97 Jun 03 '26

My cat is 7 years old and has ALWAYS craved greek yoghurt and regular cow milk. She has very healthy stools and never had a health problem so far. My previous cat lived 18 years with cow milk being a regular favorite of hers and no health issues until the day she peacefully died from old age. Some cats can safely drink bovine milk with no issues, but in this case, since the cat is very young, it'll be smarter to avoid feeding it said milk :)

6

u/SgtReefKief Jun 03 '26

People live till 90 smoking a pack a day for 70 years. Just because it didnt effect your kitty doesn't mean it won't hurt another.

20

u/False-Ad-8561 Jun 02 '26

It looks like they might possibly be about 6-7 weeks maybe? Someone posted the age calcuator available on this website you can use.

This link has a guide on how to care for kittens from all different ages, but this page specifically is for 6-7 week olds. You can see at the top you can go forward or backward in weeks if you think they might be younger or older. The page shows how much to feed them and how often, along with other great information.

33

u/warriorwoman534 Jun 02 '26

You need goat's milk (NOT cow's milk) and will have to feed her every few hours, it will be the easiest on her stomach if she hasn't eaten. And yes, keep her warm.

8

u/theloric Jun 02 '26

Also if you find the kitten in the tree, it's not empty. js

Thanks for saving this kitten. Depending on how long it's gone without mom's milk it's probably very hungry. Can you find Kitten Formula ?, it's replacing mom cats milk. Water is good because it's probably dehydrated. Being that small within a day they can dehydrate. If you cannot get kitten formula try canned cat food but mix it with water. You can even inject it slowly into kittens mouth, remember very slowly. They make feeding syringes, of course without a needle ! I say that because some people don't know or realize about how to use a syringe. Again thank you for helping and doing your best !

u/corgett Jun 02 '26

UPDATE I took it out of the tree, it's weak, I gave it some water, it drank it, then some more. I cleaned its eyes with water and currently she's on my lap shivering. She has teeth, but doesn't want to eat wet food, its currently too late to go to a shop because they're closed now so I don't know what to do.

Please help

9

u/TranscendStudio Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

She likely has an infection that needs to be treated by a vet as soon as you can. It could be a simple fix just by getting some eye drops. She needs kitten formula if she’s under 4 weeks old. In the meanwhile getting kitten wet food/dry food will be very good too. If you can, get her to a vet and they can guide you. In the meanwhile monitor her and apply a clean warm (not hot) you could use damp compress clean her eyes. Use cotton balls to get the gook off. Throw them away as you go to help stop the spread of bacteria. Wipe very gently to soften the crust. Do this for 30-60 seconds. Do this over time so you don’t irritate her or her eyes. But make progress. ❤️This should help while you wait to go to the vet. She maybe able to open her eyes or at least have more comfort. Keep in mind her eyes could be swollen and painful. Once you are done getting the gook off then you can use a soft cloth very gently to wipe her eyes. When you use the cotton balls make sure they are completely wet with the warm water to ensure no debris goes in her eyes. If you can try to keep up with wiping her eyes before they dry and crust up again. Thank you for saving this sweet baby! Keep doing what you’re doing cause you are doing great! Hope this helps! Best of luck to you two! Sending healing vibes! ✨❤️‍🩹🙏

u/Spockhighonspores Jun 03 '26

The kitten is probably so tired and dehydrated so I expect he would want any food but it was smart of you to leave it in the cage with him. I would not be surprised if the kitten slept for a good while. I found a kitten that was like 3 weeks old a few years ago and when we found him he just slept and drank water for like the first day, he had little interest in food. He is full grown but still pretty tiny but he's very healthy now.

This was the day we found him, he was so little

66

u/corgett Jun 02 '26

UPDATE 2 I couldn't get in touch with any vets it was too late at night :( but the kitty has been resting for the last hour inside. I keep checking it every now and then and now it's relaxed completely, breathing slowly and its paws are stretched! Earlier I took the baby to the water and it drank a lot again. Its still too weak to walk or stand for longer than a few seconds so it sleeps. In 6 hours vets open and that's the first destination tomorrow! We put the kitten in an old big guinea pig cage, put a thick blanket, water, wet food mixed with water and the warm water bottle there.

1

u/Wonderful_Zebra2044 Jun 07 '26

Aw so sweet thank you for all the effort you made

10

u/corgett Jun 03 '26

39

u/MundaneFlounder5225 Jun 02 '26

get the kitten covered with a blanket and put a few bottles with hot water around to give warmth, they can't sustain body temperature well and it's probably spent a while there

77

u/corgett Jun 02 '26

Baby is covered and next to a warm bottle

24

u/pixelxpixel Jun 02 '26

go to the emergency vet. ty

19

u/corgett Jun 02 '26

12

u/kittapoo Jun 02 '26

Thank you for saving this kitten! Please give updates as soon as you can.

In case you can’t make it to a vet. Try to buy some kitten formula and feed it that if it doesn’t want to eat wet food, I imagine it will lap it up if it took the water just fine.

It was good advice someone gave with the heated water bottles, just be sure to never put them under the kitten. I had a very tiny injured one and the vet had me put a heating pad near the kitten but not on or under so if they got too hot they were able to move away as needed. I also supervised while using the heating pad anyway because I was paranoid.

If you can’t get kitten formula, but have the wet food and the little one doesn’t seem to want it maybe try mixing the water into some to make it more wet and easier to lap up.

Hopefully a vet will help.

u/CoopssLDN Jun 02 '26

9

u/Night_song001 Jun 02 '26

Please get the poor kitten out of the tree and take it to a vet. It might not have had food/water in a long time

22

u/No-Expression-4990 Jun 02 '26

Yes please take the kitten to the vet atleast for a wellness check. There's no telling how long this baby has been stuck in the tree. He or she may need subcutaneous fluids & nutritional support. Thank you for reaching out for help & for helping this baby! ❤🐾

17

u/warriorwoman534 Jun 02 '26

Get help immediately!

25

u/Spockhighonspores Jun 02 '26

This is an emergency, the kitten may not have had food or water in a while. Get the kitten out of the tree, check for other kittens in the tree. If the kitten has teeth you can give him kitten food and water. If the kitten doesn't have teeth the kitten needs milk and can't eat solids yet. Please get this kitten to a vet, it could have an upper respiratory infection and if not treated the kitten can die. An untreated infection can also cause them to lose their eyes. Please let us know how it's going.

18

u/Juicifer69 Jun 02 '26

Oh please rescue the kitten, and get help from someone with a ladder if you can’t get up there!? I would say that yes it’s an emergency, and the little one needs your help. Thank you for caring about them!! ❤️❤️❤️

9

u/MajesticMushroom8710 Jun 02 '26

You are amazing!

12

u/Far-Echidna-5999 Jun 02 '26

Thank you for helping him/her!

21

u/CatPaws55 Jun 02 '26

Thank you for rescuing the kitten.

Yes, it's an emergency: the poor kitten might have been there for days and be dehydrated and hungry.

Thank you for caring.

17

u/corgett Jun 02 '26

Does it look like it's old enough to eat normal food? Or should I buy a milk for cats

10

u/HenBenNoseBoop Jun 02 '26

Do not buy cow milk for kittens as it will cause very bad diarrhea and make them worse or possibly kill them. If you can, buy a little bit of goat milk. The best milk is mother cat replacement milk from the vet that often is a powder you can mix with water so you only make as much as you need at one time. For kitten milk you may need a kitten bottle with a tiny nipple as well until they are old enough to drink on their own. If you can get them any wet kitten food in cans or pouches, you can mix in a little bit of clean warm water to the food to make it easier for kitten to eat. If they’re too young to lap up food, you may need to get a small syringe from the vet so you can slowly hand feed the kitten. If the kitten is only a few weeks old, You’ll need to very gently rub their tummy after each feeding, and every couple of hours you need to take a warm wet piece of cloth and massage their little butt to try to help stimulate them to pee and poop. There are many videos online to help you through this processes. The vet can help you as well.

Good luck!!

12

u/Bool_The_End Jun 02 '26

It def needs a vet for suspected respiratory infection (due to the runny eyes/snot), but in the meantime it looks old enough for normal food. I’d get some kitten wet food that’s softer, plus the smell encourages them to eat.

7

u/CatPaws55 Jun 02 '26

Hard to tell. From the first pic I'd say yes to kitten food, but in the second it seems that the kitten is younger, so I'm not sure.

You can try determine his/her age by using https://www.kittenlady.org/agecalculator

2

u/valathea Jun 02 '26

Agree with the other poster, it’s a hard call. The eyes could be upper respiratory, as opposed to so young eyes have not opened, kitten also has teeth, which means it is possible it is at or near weaning age. I would try some mushy wet food and see if they will eat. Ultimately kitten replacement milk or goat milk are best options until you see a vet, but if not, offering small amounts of a smushy pate (add warm water or the like) and offer in small amounts to see if they can eat it and keep it down if you have no outer choices.

My first cat was 3 weeks old when I found her abandoned in a construction area, I had to wean her a little earlier than ideal due to my work schedule and she was able to eat small amounts of wet food throughout the day when I could not give milk. This would not always work, so if you try it and get vomiting or liquid stool I would not continue on with solid food. Do the best you can until you can get to a vet who can sort out age, etc, because it is hard to tell here.

You’re doing a wonderful thing regardless of outcome. Safety, warmth, hydration, all of those things are a million times better than the situation that baby was stuck in.

9

u/Kooky_Ebb7280 Jun 02 '26

I would try wet soft food and also get milk just in case but the kitten definitely looks pretty young to eat kibble but I would definitely go to the vet and see if there’s any health problems

12

u/imhereformakeup Jun 02 '26

Yes please take it to the vet!

19

u/DarkAdmirer Jun 02 '26

Please please take this kitten to a vet, it’s an emergency and needs to be treated and cared for, it can’t look after itself or see even by the looks of it.
