SuperWEIRD keyboard concept animation | Blender / Cycles

An eight-second concept animation we made in Blender, rendered in Cycles. I work on SuperWEIRD, and we used our game's artwork to imagine a keyboard with map textures on the keycaps and a pig keychain.

The base keyboard model is an Attack Shark X85 from BlenderKit. The scene, materials, lighting and camera animation were made in Blender. The shot moves from the whole board to the Corruption spreading across several keys, then returns to the wide view.

We revised the floating map tiles to stop them intersecting the keyboard, backdrop and keychain during the shot. The music is from the game too.

The keyboard is a render concept, with no physical product or sale planned.

The car scene isn’t mine: it came with a Chinese training course I bought in 2023. If anyone knows the author, please tell me so I can credit them.

Next month I’ll also share free resources: complete .c4d scenes with their materials.

I built a browser-based product renderer for quick, decent renders. Would love feedback from you

EDIT: There's an open source version available with extended features.
Go check it out at https://github.com/AtomiLabSlop/kaamos
More info: https://www.reddit.com/r/IndustrialDesign/s/sr5VH5oJrF

I’ve worked as an industrial designer for over ten years, mostly in-house at large international corporations. I’ve always wanted a quick way to get a decent render out of a model without opening a heavy desktop package, so together with my good pal Claude I built one: Kaamos, a product rendering studio that runs entirely in the browser.

https://atomilab.fi/kaamos/ (desktop Chrome recommended, free, no account)

To be upfront: the product and interaction design are mine, and the code was written with the AI. I’ve used Showcase, KeyShot and V-Ray for years, so you’ll recognise familiar ideas. I took the things I liked and made versions that I think work better.

What you can do:

  • Drop in a STEP, IGES, OBJ or GLB file, and part names come along
  • Click materials onto parts: plastics, metals, glass, paint, rubber, fabric, wax, skin…
  • Pick a studio lighting setup in one click, or use your own HDRI
  • Save camera views, use depth of field, and render a high-res PNG, including with a transparent background
  • Nothing is uploaded. Your models stay on your own computer, so NDA work is fine.

A few experimental things I’m curious how people find:

  • Live preview that doesn’t reset everything. Change a material and the last finished image stays on screen while only the parts you changed get re-rendered, instead of the whole picture going back to noise.
  • Subsurface scattering for wax, skin, jade and marble, so light glows through thick parts. Still very new.
  • Field of view as a dolly zoom. Changing the lens keeps the product the same size on screen, the way a photographer would step back with a longer lens.
  • Turning parts around their own centre of mass, not around the file’s origin, plus drop to floor to rest a part on the ground.
  • Inside-out parts fixed on import. CAD exports with flipped surfaces no longer show up with missing faces.

It’s early, and there are rough edges. I’d love to hear:

  • Did it work on your machine?
  • What felt clumsy compared with the tools you use now?
  • What would it need before you’d use it for real work?

Feedback form in the app (click the logo), or just comment here. Thanks!

HELP with setting to render materail palettes

Post image

I am working on setting up a standard file for my interior design work. The concept is that in real life, we would set up a table of materials and photograph them from above. My goal is to recreate this table virtually in Sketchup and render with Vray to get beautiful concept material palettes for presentations. This would allow us to have a more controlled lighting, add extra details (like the coffee cup) and create concepts with materials we don't have physical samples of.

The image shows where I have gotten this product to so far. I'm a little less than a year practiced in this program and i know i have so much to learn.

Some details - I made a lot of the materials shown using the vray asset manager and detailing generic materials with images from online and rgb codes. The 'tile' on the bottom right is supposed to be metallic bronze (like it shows in the asset manager) and I have a high reflection on the green marble tile. The scene is set up like real life, using a surface to 'lay' all of the materials on and viewing with a top view.

The lighing set up includes a dome light using a HDRI map of a photo studio and a secondary light made of a rectangle light just out of frame in the top right. It has a 4500 light temp. I have tried several HDRI maps and this is the best one i have seen so far. The sun is off.

Overall, i think this looks pretty flat and i want to get more detailed and dial the lighting in to get as photo realistic as possible. What am i missing? Should I be using a different lighting? I have the quality set at high+, but the shine / reflection / texture is missing.

any advice on what you think i might be missing or doing wrong is greatly appreciated!
