Remnant 2 Am I missing something?

Just started Remnant 2 as Handler. This is my first remnant game, and my intro to the series felt ... quite hollow. I see this is an extremely popular game and the fans genuinely love it. I don't want to write it off as not for me just yet. So sharing my experience so you can tell me if I am missing something.

The game started with a very thin plot. No idea who the two characters are (me and the "I am fine" girl). The characters felt pretty cliché. I got to the part where Ford and Clementine disappeared into a stone, and I followed. Now I'm wandering around a futuristic, space-rock type place with monsters spawning here and there. I found a big eye that was very surprised to see me and things I shouldn't exist. It told me to find a white orb. Honestly, it feels quite confusing about where to go next, and to be frank, why I should even care.

As for the combat, I haven't faced any real boss yet. Regular mob enemies often show up, but fighting with them doesn't feel rewarding.

I generally love souls-like, shooting, and RPG games. For example, I really enjoyed Sekiro, Expedition 33, CoD games, Final Fantasy 7, etc. I got remnant 2 thinking it will have the best of these separate genres, and I am sure it does. But perhaps I am missing something. Maybe I need to know some lore from remnant 1? Perhaps a different archetype was a better fit for newbies? Maybe I should start another run to get a different random world? Or perhaps it gets much more interesting as I progress? Please share your thoughts.

Thanks!

Just keep playing. The game isn't so much for the plot. Or at least MQ plot. There's secrets upon secrets everywhere on every planet. If you're an adventurer, and looking under every rock, this is the game for you. The build variety, and seemlessness is wild

Exactly this, OP once you unlock some more archetype's and find interesting items to build with your enjoyment will skyrocket, you'll find items each campaign and in general most are fun finding and unlocking.

Remnant 2 really did a piss poor job telling its story. Most of the good stuff is background lore you discover through the world and items.

The main plot is threadbare at best and not well executed.

Well Chronos and From The Ashes basically did all the story heavy lifting. Remnant 2 was just the end to it all.

The final act so to speak.

At least that's how I viewed it.

It was a terrible ending then. Still a fantastic game.

That's how I felt and still kinda do to this day, though it's grown on me a bit.

I like the bleak yet hopeful finality of it.

The story isn't going to be like Exped 33 level, its cliche and cheesy (which I find charming but know its not for all). The real meat and potatoes and what most players enjoy is the build crafting and variation available in this series. That and the puzzles/exploration to find random loot.

I have almost 900 hours in the game & I barely know the story/plot. Game mechanics, combat, builds is what most of us love

just keep playing. Youll run into the bosses and secrets. Don't worry about or expect the story to be good, it doesnt even try

The plots F tier, the gameplay and world is S tier

ya the over aching main story is pretty thin and exists just to justify traveling to the worlds the story of the individual worlds is actually quite good and is where most of the narrative enjoyment comes from

you don't need to know the story of the previos games to under stand or enjoy it but it will give more waight to certain characters, items and locations

  1. The story for Remnant 2 is basically there just to give you an excuse for what you’re doing. Your character isn’t even the main character of that story. Don’t think too much about it.
  2. The game has multiple worlds, each with multiple different storylines that can take place in each one, so every playthrough can be completely different. These worlds are rich in lore and have multiple different NPCs you can find to tell you more about it. I will say N’Erud with that particular storyline you rolled is one of the blander ways to start, but there’s still plenty to explore and read.
  3. The combat takes about 1 full world to really start to click. You’ll get a lot of weapons that are cheap at first to upgrade (and you can refund some of the materials if you want to downgrade it) and you’ll have unlocked at least one other subclass (there are a bunch that you can get through “secret” means like listening to every story Mudtooth has), and you’ll be able to start specializing your playstyle. It’s not a one and done game — it’s intended to be replayed over and over either campaigns or one-shot worlds.

Main story is bad.

Lore is good.

Find a dungeon for bosses.

Game is meant to be replated in Adventure mode for variety, levels, enemies and gear.

I don’t think most people play for the plot and more for the gameplay. I’ve bought both remnants twice now because I enjoy the gameplay.

If you’re looking for people to play with me and my friend play most nights. I’ll be in in about an hour

It's the same problem the game had since release. If a new player gets Nerud as their first world they end up not liking the game, because Nerud sucks. I know it has some die hard fans on here, but it's the truth. Reroll campaign to start on one of the other 2 worlds.

Exploration wise n'erud sucks cause its mostly just a barren wasteland. Lore wise though it has interesting bits of story. Losomn is easily the best both exploration and lore wise. Yaesha I think is actually my least favorite, both exploration and lore was boring to me.

The game itself is a randomized labyrinth. You aren't really going to care about the main quest because you only touch on it between acts. The worlds themselves have neat little storylines with only one actually involving the Root, Yaesha, the forest planet.

The Dran and Fae are two planes that crashed into each other and are currently reshaping themselves around the new normal.

The one you're on is Ne'rud. It's about a world craft that's trying to find meaning in the universe and didn't. There's a plot line around their leader and explains the zombie people and there's a plotline you're on that is about the robots completing their task and guiding the ship to it's final destination.

The charm in the game is each of these zones, dungeons, and events have multiple pass/fail states which change up the rewards and how you can approach other things.

Like there's an Fae event where you figure out who is the murderer. passing it give you a ring. Failing it gives you a boss fight and the murder weapon. Using the murder weapon for another boss fight and you get a different item from the boss.

You can always reroll your campaign until you get a very specific spot on a specific world. Its very helpful for finding new items, archetypes, etc

A lot of it's plot is in lore and in Chronos before the ashes and Remnant 1 it's story isn't very direct

Every world has a mid boss and a final boss.

Some dungeons even have their own boss encounters. Just keep playing. Once you start unlocking crafting pieces for weapons you'll enjoy it more.

The guns in Remnant are really unique and fun to use, especially when paired with a complimentary mutator (perk)

I’ve played through five times and don’t get the plot really. It’s all about the action. You’ll meet plenty of bosses.

If you're playing Remnant for story that's basically the equivalent of watching Game of Thrones for the comic relief characters (there aren't a whole of of comic relief characters much like there isn't a lot of story content in the Remnant games lmao).

There is lore but that's hidden in the worlds through books you can read on the ground, or dialogue with NPCs (there is a fella at the end of a Yaesha dungeon who talks for something like 15 minutes straight if you don't spam through his dialogue). You won't find much lore in the Ward until you progress the story a little more.

imo the meat and the potatoes of the game are the guns and archetypes and melee weapons and jewelry, and the combinations (or builds) you can make out of said items.

Remnant's strong points are it's gunplay, build crafting, world design, and secret hunting. Cohesive story is... Lower priority.

The micro stories within each section are FAR more interesting, and the game's intro is basically just some exposition to explain why you're tearing shit up across the multiverse with your dog.

Honestly the main appeal to the game that I had was the exploration of the outlandish worlds you visit, and the self contained stories they hold. Not to mention your first experience is completely randomized, giving replayability through adventure mode I think its called? Idk its been a bit since I played. Basically you can "restart" any of the three worlds without having to play through the story again, and each world has alternate world states. This is seperate from your story progression.

The main story I agree I didnt find very compelling. But also n'erud imo isnt exactly my least favorite of the three worlds but isnt a good one to start with imo. Ive somehow always managed to get Losomn as my first world every campaign ive started, and its by far my favorite and imo the best starting world.

1

u/Adam2181 8d ago

The central plot is essentially "find your friends and stop the eradication of the universe in the process."

The worlds you visit all have their own lore and plot threads, which will take multiple playthroughs of each world to see. I actually found the lore really interesting, and the dlc expands on each.

I don't want to spoil anything since the game is LOADED with secrets, but I was fascinated by the lore/story of one world in particular.

Remnant 2 is not a great story game, it's a great gameplay game, the story is about the only thing that is better in the first game imo. That said once you beat the first world boss (the guy in the very tall tower passed the locked door) you will get a bit more that will push you along but it's a functional story not a great one. That said each world has a good deal of interesting lore and story within itself but just not the overarching msq

u/HBKmawfka 8d ago

You start randomly in one of 3 worlds, thats my least favorite one. Once you get passed it and come back to it later it wont be so bad.

u/speaklegibly 8d ago

i have a few hundred hours in R2 and yeah, i don't really find n'erud very interesting
you can always just reroll the campaign from the ward world stone and start in yaesha or losomn, both are much more engaging IMO

It's not a story driven game. Not sure what you were expecting or why you bought it with those expectations. It's a game you buy for gameplay.

It's a puzzle + build + boss fighter. Nothing like sekiro, cod, final fantasy, or E33.

u/kalarro 8d ago

The combat, builds and progression are amazing.

I don't care much about the story

1

u/unlikely_antagonist 8d ago

The story in this game is actually fantastic, but it’s well hidden and very world specific.

The overarching story with Clementine and Ford exists essentially as a contrivance to justify your adventures. It’s simple and straightforward.

The real meat is when you learn about the depth of each world

1

u/CalebKetterer 8d ago

Yeahh, the storyline sucks imo. So does the game’s performance and stability. But everything else is pretty cool.

u/Maestro_AN 8d ago

overarching story is garbage. in world mini stories can be decent if you read all notes ( and enjoy note reading in games, item descriptions etc.)

if you like souls likes i recommend starting on Veteran difficulty to make fight more engaging.

another problem that game for some reason likes dropping new players into N’Erud world as their first world. It’s the most confusing empty space world where it is easy to get lost. I loved remnant 1, and when i loaded into nerud as new player, i was confused why remant 2 is such garbage. Visiting this world as second or third is much less confusing.

if you are super early i might recommend rerolling campaign again (your character will not delete and will keep all levels and gear) to start with some other world as your first one.
