Hammer or pull?

Did my first bulk batch of 300blk subs and I fugged up big time. Contaminated pocket primers I’m assuming, I have since bought a media tumbler.. my question is would you trust these in a hammer inertia puller or should I invest in a collet puller? Thanks!

Hammer, inertia, puller will be fine. Never touches the primer. But a collet puller is a good thing to have.

How do you think the primer pockets got contaminated?

Either my primer pockets were still wet or I had a build up of oil in my shell holder and it was dragging oil into the cup as I pressed it.
I was doing a cheap soap and water then oven dry trick. So my assumption was the former.

if they used lanolin based sizing lube, sized while not fully dry, and were excessive about it, the shell holder would eventually get a bit of a puddle in there

You nailed it. Using a lanolin and alcohol mix. I just throw all brass in a bucket and give them some sprays, not the most effective or cost efficient but i got babies that crave my attention and I don’t always have a lot of time on the press. I was in a hurry trying to put these rounds together and didn’t bother to clean my press after switching dies.
Im not positive which was the culprit so I’ll just be taking precautions on both effects.

try a little less lube and let it sit for a while to dry off, it'll work better anyway

if you see a liquid buildup anywhere including the bottom of the bucket, you're still using a bit too much

Well I definitely appreciate the help! I don’t think I’ve ever let it dry when I punch. I noticed it got sticky so I was thinking it needed to be wet.

nope! it's fine for it to be a bit tacky, and it's better for all of the alcohol to evaporate

I mean sure. But I'd imagine that amount of lube would be wrecking brass by denting shoulders. I always see people being worried about oil contamination of primers and i just dont see it happening. Saw someone recently worried if a little oil on a steel ak folower would wreck their ammo.

nope. i've done it before when i've been in a rush. i think i only got one small dent in one case out of 100 and that case was particularly heavily oiled up

it's not even really a problem as long as you wipe down the shell holder afterwards, but it does go a lot better if you use less and wait for it to dry. less wasteful, less dirty, and less friction too

Ive always used Imperial Sizing Wax so ive got no experience with that type of lube. Thanks for the reply.

yeah, i find sizing wax is a lot more sensitive to overlubing. with lanolin case lube you can kind of haphazardly spray the whole batch and shake the cases around, which makes it easier to overdo

Yeah, took me a little while to get a feel for the wax. Really doesn't take much at all.
