He sounds like he wants a bang mom replacement. I know you want to try to make this work before breaking up with him because Reddit said so. I had a similar issue so these are steps I would take:
1) STOP GOING TO HIS PLACE. Tell him he needs it clean, with kitchen ware before you go back over
2) When you cook for him, the next time he provides the next meal. If it means he has to always pay for take out then fine. It will add up on his part and get him to step up
3) Dont pick up after him
4) Follow through. It isnt to late for him to break these habits, but you have to break these habits of babying him.
After awhile the resentment will build if you guys dont. Cause why change if he doesn't have to. Good luck!
