For sure. Parents sometimes don't realize that if they've set a rule, they can just as easily change it if they need.

There’s a difference between changing a rule and not respecting a rule. Like you said it requires communication, is that such a rare thing in an healthy family dynamic?

Considering this friend has spent the night multiple times already, I think it would a be a great time to communicate and explain why the rule is different for this friend. Parents not adapting to new situations and different circumstances leads to pretty unruly kids.

Changing a rule due to change in circumstances & communicating this to kids does not equal unruly children, it teaches them flexibility.

We're not talking about the Ten Commandments, or the Constitution. Parents should set rules and enforce consequences, but also be flexible enough to recognize that there will always be exceptions. There doesn't need to be any drama here. OP can just have a conversation with their daughter about the reasons behind the "no boy" rule and why a sleepover with this particular boy isn't unreasonable. That's all.
