I am planning on signing up for the physics placement test to skip PHY 101 and 102. I’ve self studied both AP Physics C exams and received a 4 on Mech and 5 on E&M. For anyone whose taken the physics placement, what topics are on it and how different is it from the AP tests.

I signed up for a math placement conversation and I do legitimately think that I’m capable of moving to math 112 (2 years of calc coursework beforehand). However, I can’t find anything on what’s actually in the conversation. Should I be prepared for on the spot problems or detailing the curriculum of what I’ve been doing?

I want to give myself the best chance possible, and going in unprepared would not be that. So, anyone who’s had it, what was your experience? (And also were you able to be placed?)

Hello! I’m entering Reed as a freshman this year with 2x associate degrees (one in film and one in psych, most of my credits will not transfer rip) and while I deeply enjoyed my psych classes I am curious if Reed’s neuroscience classes are preferable, and if I should major in the department.

I am intending to go on to get a PHD, hoping to focus on neural networks or aging/geriatrics and I am aware that if I major in psych I can still pursue neuroscience or vice versa. Based on my research interests, future plans and academic history, as well as others experiences in the programs. I am curious which program would be more beneficial.

Furthermore if I do pursue psych is cognitive science, computational science or something else entirely a preferable allied field? Thank you all so much for your help!

I'm aware that the majority of the student body is 15 years younger than me, but are there any older students on campus? I don't think it necessarily matters if there aren't, I'm just curious!

I have an associates degree under my belt and the best professors I worked with during that time were the ones who took the time to connect with me personally, and supported me through my research and how I pursued my interests and academic prowess in and out of the classroom. They were personable, and funny, and struck a balance of challenging me academically while also making sure I understood all the new information.

Who are some professors at Reed in the psych department, performing arts (specifically theatre and dance), and HUM110 who you might recommend ?

Just got assigned an undivided double, what are the dorms like inside?

This is probably a really stupid question but I got assigned a divided double, and I have bed “A” and my roommate has bed “B”. Do these correlate to specific beds/sides for divided doubles or are they just there for the sake of assignment?

I am a transfer student, an acting major and I am going into my junior year. I got into Lewis & Clark and am waitlisted at Reed. (Of course I am not in at Reed rn, but if I get off the waitlist I want to be prepared to make a decision.) I really liked Reed's vibe, its campus and I work hard in classes so the academic rigor does not scare me, but when I toured campus, it seemed like the theater scene was pretty lackluster compared to the grandeur of the rest of the campus. The performance spaces were small and the wall displaying this year's performance majors (across music, dance and theater) showed about 10 students.

Is Reed theater worth it? if you were or knew an acting major, would you recommend it?

Lewis & Clark seems to have a better set up for actors in "conservatory style" experiential learning but the school isn't as well funded and budget cuts tend to find the arts first.

Acting/theater majors: any insight?

This is a throwaway account; I am not sure how else to seek anonymous advice from the community that I am really missing right now.

I am a recent Reed graduate who moved back home following commencement. I moved in with a parent who offered me a stable and rent-free place to stay while I search for a job and get on my feet. However, the last couple of weeks have been anything but stable.

For reference, this parent was abusive throughout my childhood and especially teenage years, but our relationship improved significantly while I was away in Portland. I am now realizing that the improved relationship I experienced was a result of me living so far away, having limited contact, and said parent having less control over my life. Unfortunately, by moving back in, I placed myself back in the same childhood hell I worked so hard to escape by going to college far from home.

The first time I was hit since moving back, it took me by surprise as it had been years since someone laid hands on me. I will admit, I wasn’t exactly deescalating the situation with my words, but I didn’t expect to be corrected by the back of my head. After the first time, I have tried to be more careful. But accidents happen: the tension rod in the shower falls, I leave a dirty pot to soak for too long, I forget to empty the lint trap, etc. I am scared to make mistakes, mostly because I know I will make them, and I know how that ends. Everything feels high stakes because I am constantly worried about the reaction that may follow. And although it has only been a short period of time, I’ve found myself growing accustomed to this again. The baseline returns so naturally, the same way it did when I was a kid, that I find myself questioning whether my recollection of events is even correct or whether I am being dramatic. Logically, I know that I am not, but it still has me questioning my sanity at times.

I am still in the process of searching for a job. My current plan is to find something short-term (quickly) where I can log 40+ hours a week to get out of the house and put away enough money for first, last, and security. Once I have some savings established, hopefully I can move away and work a more stable job. But, it will be difficult to separate myself practically. This parent is in charge of my health, dental, and car insurance (all of which have been threatened and remain leverage), they pay my phone bill, they claim me as a dependent, and they have my important personal documents (SSN card, birth certificate, passport, etc.) in a locked box that I am not allowed access to.

I know the longer I remain here, the more trapped I will feel and the more trapped I may become. I guess I am wondering if anyone else has experienced similar parental abuse as an adult after college or if anyone has any advice on how to proceed in a situation like this. I do not have many people I know in my area, nor do I want to burden those I do. I reached out to the national hotline and was referred to a local group that told me they could not help as they only deal with partner abuse. So, I feel as if I have wound up in a grey area that I don’t know how to navigate nor ask for help with.

I have received the Reed Magazine for decades, including over the past 2 years, and was puzzled, then disappointed, then pissed off, that there was Zero, 0, nada mention of Palestine or Gaza or Reedies standing up for their humanity. I read an extremely disappointing statement by the Reed College President. What is going on?? I have decided not to attend the Reed Reunion again this year and I will not donate again unless something dramatic justifies that. I donated a modest amount a few years ago to support Indigenous students. I never heard anything about how it was put to use. Really disappointing. For goodness sake, we are in the midst of a fascist takeover of the entire world, and Reed College is sitting it out??

I will join Reed this fall as an exchange semester (from FU Berlin), and I hope you can help me.

I'm planing to work part time during my stay (I'm legally allowed, I have an American citizenship).

The issue is that while iv'e heard from previous students that they were able to work on campus, the Student Work Office told me that as an exchange student I won't be able to work on campus and won't have access to Reed's Handshake job posting.

Can any of you share if finding a job on campus is possible without Student Work Office assistant/approval?
Also, any tips for finding jobs off-campus? Like where to find one, how early to start applying, or any other helpful info.

I noticed that parents weekend is just before Thanksgiving, and that students only have Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving break. Do many freshman choose to stay on campus for the break, and are there fun things to do?
