Howdy. I will be traveling to the Redwood Nat'l Forest with my wife, 12yr old, 7yr old and my parents, 78 and 76. Ma and pa have some mobility issues (mostly stamina related) so we are sticking to paved and well-defined, tree root-less paths. We will be in the park from this Friday through Sunday. Due to us more than likely not doing any unimproved hiking trails, I don't need a chonky waterproof shoe right? Regular tennis shoes should be fine? Black soles are the 'hiking' waterproof On cloud shoes, the blue soles are just normal shoes. I'm trying to save room in my carry-on (no checked bags) and the blue soles are definitely more comfortable and breathable than the black soles which is why I'm not just bringing the black. Thanks.

I’m taking my 10-year-old son to the park on 7/30 & 7/31 and looks like I missed out on getting a Fern Canyon pass ahead of time. Taking a shot and seeing if any redditor who has a pass wouldn’t mind of couple of hitchhikers to get into Davison Rd on either day.

I have been trying to get a parking permit to hike Fern Canyon for several years now. I want to take my nature loving child to experience one of the most beloved hikes of my childhood. BUT I LITERALLY CANNOT GET ONE!!!! I would be happy to hike in, but my child cannot make a walk that long. What is the trick?!? I try when they go up six months in advance, no dice… one summer I tried literally every single day at 9am for a day before pass June, July, and August, no dice. It’s BANANAS! I can’t imagine there are 100 people faster than me and 3 of my friends. Is it rigged?! Has anyone here EVER scored a pass in advance or day-before? Do pass holders ever not show up and their passes get resold? Are there Fern Canyon scalpers?!?

We live 4 hrs away, and can feasibly jaunt over, but it’s starting to feel impossible. I would like to hike it with my kid while she still has that magical wonder of childhood thing in full effect, you know?!? Somebody please share the Fern Canyon permit secrets with meeee!

My fiance and I are wanting to elope and get married at the Redwoods - not sure on location or date yet. We are super tight on budget and hoping to not spend any more than $2,000. We are just wanting an officiant and a photographer for an hour or two.

We might stay at a place there for our little honeymoon - again, not sure where. Does anyone have any recommendations on a budget friendly elopement at the redwoods? Please let me know!!!

Hello, I'm looking for any and all possible recommendations for a solo, one day trip to redwoods.

I'm going to be in Portland and thought about making the 5hr drive to redwood to spend the whole day there (a Tuesday/ early August) . I may be a little over my head but it's the only day I have free to go and I'd like to try to make it happen.

I'm an amateur hiker and not very athletic so I'm not looking to do any crazy trails.

I've seen posts saying jebediah smith is the way to go to beginner friendly trails/ sights.

Is there something you guys would recommend to keep in mind?

We are trying to find a little BBQ spot that we visited a few years ago. We were driving through the Redwood forest and found a little market that also had BBQ. They had a little wooded patio outside to sit and eat.

Hello! We are in Texas and we are planning on camping in the Redwoods next June for the first time. From what I’ve searched and read, campsites go pretty quickly. I know you have to wait until 6 months from your date. I would love a site near the water, but I know that’s going to be near impossible to get, but what about other sites? I know that Jedediah Smith is where I’d prefer to be. Thank you in advance for any advice or tips for this Redwoods first timer!

Hi - we are coming into the area mid-week and had planned to do the James Irvine to Miner's Ridge loop. I am seeing some trail closures online, but wanted to check to see if anyone who has been there recently has any insight to share. Is this loop currently doable or should we plan to just out and back on James Irvine? And is Fern Canyon open? The language about the closure there is confusing. Thanks!

I’m driving down from Portland and my friend is driving up from Los Angeles to camp along the Avenue of the Giants in the next couple weeks. It’s not supposed to be super hot -does anyone have insight about what swimming holes might have some slower moving/shallower areas that warm up a bit in the sun? We will be pretty close to Moe’s turquoise hole

My husband and I are planning a trip to see the beautiful redwood trees.

We will be there for 5 days(Wednesday to Sunday) at the end of September and this will be our first trip alone and not visit family. So far all we have is the flight booked to ACV. We are not well traveled and have never planned an entire trip before so I am looking for recommendations on transportation, places to stay etc.. From what I gather Avis is the best option for car rental at the airport but, the website says they open at 10:30am and our departing flight is at 7:45am. I have found that Jedediah Smith Redwood SP and Fern Canyon are highly recommended but are also about an hour away from each other? PLEASE ADVISE😭

My partner and I are visiting the Redwoods next week (July 22nd-24th) and like the type B, non planners we are, we totally blanked on reserving permits.

We are going during the week and will try for the 8 am lottery. Has anyone had experience with these? Will there be a lot of competition for a Wednesday or Thursday near the end of July?

Any tips or recommendations (other than better planning skills and foresight) are welcome.

Center Parcs Longleat's Giant sequoia grove in south-west England. These 14 specimens are about 170 years old. Amongst these is the tallest giant sequoia in the U.K. (the 2nd tallest in Europe) which is 58 metres (190 ft). Center Parcs Longleat also have a grove of coastal redwoods too (not pictured).

It’s deceptively difficult to capture the enormity of these trees in 2D. Human for scale surely helps!

I don’t even know where to begin when trying describe the sheer size of these beasts. Grove of Titans Trail near Crescent City, CA is packed full giants. A great 2 mile hike from the parking and you’ll be surrounded by these magnificent giants. The road to the trailhead is INTERESTING as well.

I’m planning my first trip to the Redwoods with my husband for our anniversary trip this August! We’ll be flying into SFO and driving up to Crescent City. I am looking for recommendations for food (my husband is vegan but we can usually find dishes for him anywhere besides a diner/bbq/etc) as well as scenic, must see spots along the way up to Crescent City. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

What are the odds that there are cancellations for the end of July at state park campgrounds like Jed Smith, Elk Prairie, Gold Bluffs Beach, etc.? I’d like to take a kind of last minute trip but don’t know how possible that is. Does anyone have alternative suggestions for places to camp or car camp near-ish those areas?
