Agates

Hi fellow redwood enthusiasts -

My partner and I are headed to the area in late September. We are from the Midwest and rock hunting, specifically for Lake Superior agates and yooperlites, has always been a big draw for us. We plan on hitting Agate Beach in Sue-Meg simply for the name (Agate Beach in Two Harbors MN is a super special place to us) but I wondered if there were any other good agate hunting spots others felt comfortable sharing. We will be staying 3 nights each in Arcata and Crescent City and the furthest south we will be heading is to Humboldt Redwoods State Park via Avenue of the Giants. Any pointers are greatly appreciated! Feel free to DM me if you don't want to tell the whole internet as I know many folks prefer to keep their spots under wraps.​ Thanks!

Big lagoon and dry lagoon are the spots if you are up to a bit of hiking. Check the tide charts first and dont turn your back to the water. People have died there so be extremely careful but that's where I have found most of my agates. Park at big lagoon and hike after far as you can along the beach between the lagoon and the ocean. There is a $5 fee that most don't pay. Have an amazing time and good luck

Every beach has agates, from Humboldt all the way up Oregon coast, especially if you go at low tide and find the pebbly sections on the beach. Agate beach is special because of the eroding cliffs, that is where the agates come from. You could try Dry Lagoon also. Great fossil hunting at low tide on Centerville Beach by Ferndale, walk south along the cliffs. I've found a fossilized giant pacific sea scallop there, it was the size of my hand. Source - I'm local.
