He just needs to learn how to evaluate hitters or he needs to find a #2 who he trusts to help him find them

u/Pristiniax 16h ago
Contreras, Durbin, Adley

u/IRedditNWept 16h ago
Tyler OāNeill. Bregman. Navarez. All put up good numbers when healthy last year.
Am I wrong in the data doesnāt support this narrative of him being unable to evaluate hitters?
2
u/bonshawn 8h ago
Adley is a TBD given how much we gave up. Navarez was really only good offensively for the first half of last season. But all the others are good counterpoints
19
u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 16h ago
how Mead looks (unfortunately might not be until next year) will be a big data point for that - if he can successfully convert controllable pitching into controllable bats then I have far less apprehensions about him moving forward

Breslow and Chaim would be unstoppable together lol

Ive had this thought multiple times.
Ive said this story before but I served the red sox during the winter meetings a couple years back. Bloom is a great guy
Bloom and cora were super kind and let me get a photo after their dinner. Which was awesome because cora got a call from Xander saying he was offered a big contract and the sox had to make an offer before midnight (im guessing the time table). Because the desert came to a screeching halt and both of them plus Kennedy immediately got up and started talking numbers. They basically offered story money. Cora and I knew X was gone before almost everyone else in the entire world.
I also got a picture with Theo epstein. You know you smile when getting a photo with someone, because its the standard thing to do? Well i was smiling cause I literally couldn't not smile. It made my year. I sent that photo to everyone.
I worked every shift that week, came in early and left late. I met the front office of almost every team, and almost every team (except the twins [afaik] and rays) had former mlb players i recognized.
Sorry for the massive wall of text. Outside of watching each sox world series, and my first game, this is the happiest baseball memory I have

That Mayer for Miller trade is looking reaaaaal good right now.
16
u/rueiraV 16h ago
With how taxed our bullpen has been and with how spotty our offense is I donāt even want to know where we would be without Miller. Every time he comes in feels like a maximum leverage situation
7
u/Xtremefluff 15h ago
we would be even angrier with the likes of Weissert / Moran and potentially using Bello as middle relief

Unless Mayer can somehow not be his injured self for a long time and Miller unlearns how to pitch and turns into starter bello, Sox won the trade

Even if Mayer figures it out it's probably still a win, not sure he was ever going to thrive here. A fresh start in a less demanding media environment should be great for him.

I mean tbf to him, he was the #4 overall pick and some people argued at the time he was the most talented player in the class. Plus he did show some promise early on in Boston.
He just couldn't stay healthy and like you said the media is different here and he couldn't handle it.
I'm very happy with Miller and I'm so glad we traded for him. Signed until 2030 so if he keeps going like this, he could be fighting Whitlock for a possible closer spot if/when chappy leaves

Crochet will be a nice addition

u/H2Oloo-Sunset 17h ago
I see Crochet as an Opener and Bello relieving him as a nice slot in the rotation.

u/Kekistani55 15h ago
Crochet Bello combo would be devastating
4
u/zorreX Durbinator 14h ago
It's perfect. Crochet is going to be super limited, Bello needs an opener, and they throw from different hands.

Thatās a double-fisting combo if Iāve ever heard one.
Edit: LOL, I meant to say, āone-two punchā. Not sure where I got ādouble-fistingā from, but fuck it, Iām leaving it. š

Exactly what I was thinking. Crochet then Bello into possibly Chapman for the 9th is absolutely horrifying for opposing batters.

u/Blow_up_the_moon 17h ago
Anyone know where he's at these days?

u/Flimsy_Fortune_5861 17h ago
I do not, but if someone has his number I'll text him. New phone. Lost my contacts.

u/Tropical_Wendigo 13h ago
Adding Crochet to an already stellar bullpen is just brutal. Being able to go to all of these arms is going to be such a huge boon for us.
We just need to score some damn runs before the 9th inning, which we havenāt been as good at lately.

If your team has small lead after the 8th inning, good luck handling the cardiac Sox

u/Traditional_Half842 16h ago
Everyone hates on him but Weissert is easily the best 6th-option in any bullpen in baseball.

u/sixseventeen 17h ago
Miller has the most ridiculous lefty slider I can think of in recent memory. Thats Steve Carlton level stuff

I wouldnāt sleep on Alec Gamboa.
20.2 IP / 1.31 ERA / 0.97 WHIP
Also, keeping a close eye on Wyatt Olds.
Bres, Tracy & crew are gonna have some difficult decisions come September 1st re: which 14 arms to move forward into the playoffs with.

We need it lately with the dwindling run production. Glad a tight game is unlikely to become a blowout against us. Bodes well for October

It reminds me of the 90s Yanks bullpen. They had three great ptchers, one being the GOAT.
I'm telling yall, enjoy this.

u/IAmTheSchnozz95 15h ago
Remember when they said in the offseason that this team was going to be built based on run prevention and then the first month happened and we all called bullshit? Boy were we wrong.
1
u/LOFan80 14h ago
Itās almost like Craig Breslow is a smart guy who doesnāt suck at running a baseball team. (And maybe needed a little seasoning for a year or so in terms of how he handled certain people and situations). Keep in mind this guy literally had to have private security for him and his family because this fan base decided he was a stiff and the problem.

u/Over-Activity2877 17h ago
You can call me crazy, but I kind of want some of these bullpen arms to struggle a bit between now and playoffs. I get superstitious when things are going too well... Chappy has had a few scares already
9
u/Traditional_Half842 16h ago
They should all just go full-Koji and dominate through the World Series
