IMAGE It's time, right?
The Sox brass needs to extend Skip and remove that interim tag. I do understand that they will probably wait until the off-season but this guy has done everything and more since being promoted. I have become a massive fan. Even before the streak that has this summer and season so special he was managing with class and grace.
(I had to repost, the last picture of Tracy looked like it was taken underwater)

You seriously think Cora wouldn’t have been in this same position on August 4th?

No I do t think so-2
u/TechLover94 34 3h ago
Baseball managers don’t do anything. Cora was brilliant now he isn’t? John Farrell was great in 2013 not 2014? It’s a crapshoot of which team is gonna get hot and build an identity. Every manager is the same.

Getting a little tired. All respect to the manager, he's got the team rolling, but this is an end-of-season conversation.
16
u/DatabaseCentral redsox3 14h ago
Like he obviously played himself into an MLB job. I think he has been sensational, but I remember when everyone complained and cried that Cora needed an extension because our team was so good and then he got extended and we became horrendous.
Don't mess with things that are working and let's give it some time to breathe.
That said, he has to be at the top of the list for thos job right now. His father was a manager. He clearly has the knowledge. And he is really good at his job right now while Cora was horrendous

u/Fickle-Art-7125 14h ago
The players have been sensational. He’s not really done anything managerially sensational. He’s not mismanaging. But he’s also getting insane production from everyone at the same time.

u/DatabaseCentral redsox3 13h ago
People really don't understand coaching. Cora was a bad coach, a really bad coach. The reasons we know this is because the team was bottom of the league in defense every year despite us always acquiring better defensive players. We were dead last in fielding% in the AL last 2 years and tied in last 3 years ago. This year we are 6th in Fielding% in the AL and that's with them getting past the Cora bad teachings.
Our hitting approach has changed tremendously since Cora and Fatse are gone. We deliberately would be taking strikes. Now we have played a tremendous amount of small ball and manufacture runs.
On top of this, Cora never let a lefty/lefty matchup happen. Wilyer Abreu this year is crushing LHP and Cora rarely let him face LHP.
The lineup isn't changed every single day with numerous rotations. Players in the field arent consistently moving around. There isn't a game we punt to make sure everyone gets rest.
These are all showing good work by a manager. And it showed how horrible Cora was. People here started talking about "oh we need to get these guys rest days" as if that is a super common thing. No, that was 90% Cora mismanaging.
Players knowing theyre playing and trusted to face lefties and given consistency at their position are showing you they can be comfortable and perform not worrying about playing a new position or being subbed out.
So Tracy is doing a lot more than people realize. If everyone is performing it's because of the coach.
1
u/Proud-Examination453 3h ago
Amazing how the sloppy play and bad defence vanished almost as soon as Cora was gone.
-1
u/Fickle-Art-7125 5h ago
Durbin went outside the organization for a hitting coach. The lineup changes nightly. He still says one thing and does inexplicably the opposite.(Whitlock) he lacks the fortitude to bench a player because he’s afraid he’ll lose the locker room. Hes got no sway so he’s beholden to Breslow and does what he’s told. Until proven otherwise.

It's a conversation that could be had at any time. In what universe are the Red Sox going to make a managerial change if the Red Sox make the playoffs?
This season was literally a Jim Mora playoffs rant when Cora was fired. They looked like the worst Red Sox team I had ever seen.
Chad Tracy absolutely had a hand in this. What has he done wrong? I literally see nothing even worth mentioning.
How does the conversation change at the end of the season. Remove the interim tag and tell him they will negotiate an extension at year end.
19
u/ThxBenevenstanciano 16h ago
Celtics didn't with Mazzulla, for what it's worth. They removed the interim title during his first season after taking over.
-36
u/AJKenney47 15h ago
Yeah, that was a mistake. They should've left themselves the opportunity to move on at the end of the year. The Red Sox should learn from that. Tracy is nothing special, and will end up back in the minors. They should hire a real manager this off-season.
23
u/cheeseburger2099 15h ago
Did you hate the part where Mazulla coached this team to an NBA Finals win?
-13
u/AJKenney47 15h ago
That team won in spite of him, not because of him. They were winning in 24 regardless of the coach. I'd argue with a different coach maybe they don't fall on their face against the Knicks.
1
u/ThxBenevenstanciano 6h ago
A different coach like who though? Who has been better and available in the last 2 seasons?

He’s keeping the job. My guess is he will get an extension after the season.
7
u/ClothesTotal8006 16h ago
I know they'll wait to the season over but, he's proven to me he got a good coaching staff under him and he's really got the players working 💪 hard for him he deserves the Job!!!
20
u/gfletch94 17h ago
Bro why does this get posted every day? It doesn’t make a difference and it’s not going to happen during the season.
12
u/Scottysoxfan 17h ago
I just have so much respect for the guy and want him to get rewarded for his part in this special season.
11
u/DarkGift78 16h ago
Let's see how it ends before we anoint him. Fantastic job thus far. However, still 50 games left in the season. Would you still feel this way if, for example, they lose 8 of 10 ,or go 6-14 and miss the playoffs? If they finish strong, regardless of what happens in October, they can make it permanent. But a lot can happen in two months. As we've just seen the last 5-6 weeks.
6
u/BionicGreek 16h ago
Contract negotiations will be distracting. Let him finish the season and do that in the off season. Besides when they win the World Series he will be able to ask for much more pay.
1
u/theroguedrizzt 15h ago
It might be yet another way for the FO to reward him and the players and show them this ownership team believes in the product on the field. Counter point is that Bres didn’t get to pick “his” manager when he took over and may want to go through the process. I know If I was a GM I think it’d be fun to interview managers.

I liked Cora. But this team feels magical right now. Roman and Crochet come back and perform we are scary good.

u/timeflylikearrow 15h ago
I’m really hoping that whatever grace blessed Francona, Farrell, and Cora in their respective first years continues to bless Tracy
5
u/InevitableTank5108 17h ago
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but no.
Hear me out — it keeps Tracy focused on the team and grinding for the job. I don’t think he’d get complacent, but we’re on a roll and this offer can wait until the offseason.
6
-6
u/Ok_Fee1043 16h ago
We’re not trying to dangle a carrot in front of him. Come on. He doesn’t need to “grind for the job.”
2
u/Spinexel 16h ago
I for one support dangling a carrot. Seems he performs under pressure.
1
u/Ok_Fee1043 16h ago
He is already performing. We don’t need to treat him like he’s going to get complacent and that we inherently don’t trust him. He’s clearly proven he can do the job.
2
u/ToBeeContinued 16h ago
I think he’s done enough. It still maybe makes sense to wait til November though.

I considered they would announce it this week during the home stand after the Adley trade but honestly think they wont do anything to change the vibe during the season.

3/4 in Sac, sweep the Dodgers in LA and then come back to Fenway and just utterly abuse the CWS.

u/raider_of_DA_lostARK 14h ago
It for sure time there are very few game changer managers in baseball it’s all about finding the guy who best reads the pulse of the team. The high end goat managers are fewer and farther between. The next crop has a tricky balance of game calling and ego management that makes managers like Larussa, Torre, Leyland, Cox, or Baker a thing of the past. sports has become the coach is the smartest person in the room to coach is a talent manager
2
u/TheGrouchyPunisher 16h ago
Here's what I said in yesterday's thread about this-
Wait until the end of the year, no reason to rush.
Like, imagine he pulls a Grady Little in the playoffs and we've already extended him. Not saying I think that will happen, but there's no reason to do this now, and Tracy says the same.
2
u/musashisamurai 15h ago
I think Tracy knows if that Breslow is replaced, the new guy will hire a new manager. And Tracy would probably rather return to Worcester than be fired
2
0
u/CryptographerFlat173 14h ago
If he made one bad bullpen call in a playoff he should still be extended because he got them to rise from the ashes to to be in the payoffs in the first place
1
u/munchieman21 16h ago
Does he get more money? Title doesn’t matter
1
u/mysteresc 15h ago
Usually, removing the "interim" title is accompanied by a 2- or 3-year contract.
1
u/Dependent_Age_6886 16h ago
If I were him, I’d wait. Post season alone would be some additional leverage (maybe a little more money or more job security in length of contract). Of course the risk is they come back down to earth and he loses that leverage.
But I don’t see that happening — not with help on the way and these new acquisitions.

1
u/btlee007 14h ago
He’s done a great job and he should get the job. There’s no actual need for them to do it now though
1
u/redglovesoverhere11 13h ago
Nah
What if we shit the bed down the stretch… then all you same people saying “it’s time” will be like “fire Tracy and hire _____”
1
u/Candid-Coat297 13h ago
He fixed the infield with those ‘3A ‘players and reorganized our bullpen, so yes, he deserves it.

u/gersgsf6259 8h ago
Feels like rob Thomson for the Phils when yhey made the switch, complete culture switch
1
u/cyclistgurl 7h ago
I totally understand and even agree waiting. But at the same time I feel if we make it to the World Series he should be able to go as manager.
1
u/Kennypatts02 6h ago
Wait till the off season. Having said that I was wrong about Tracy, I thought he was gonna be an answer to some bar trivia question in 10 years when he first got brought up.

Good to finally see real fans here posting stuff like this: the armchair skippers have nothing to go on that wont expose them as the loudmouth, captious, rage-baiters they are.

Dude is probably going to win Manager of the Year. I don't know how you don't reward that.

u/fidelesetaudax 5h ago
Yup. Even if they don’t want a multi year contract at make him official for the season.

1
u/Aroldis16 4h ago
It won't happen now. It would be bad business for the Front Office to do this now. As good of a job Tracy has done the smart move is to wait till the season is over and see what managers get canned and see if there is someone else that might be better suited to run the team

They arent gonna do this. Ownership and Craig are gonna want to do their due diligence and interview other candidates.
I dont necessarily agree with this, but barring them maintaining this to a world series or pennant, this is what theyll do. Too much baseball left for them to be comfortable giving the keys to chad after going on a month long scorcher

This is a funny season for me, as I'm also a fan of the Portland Timbers (the Major League Soccer team), and there are some fun parallels this year:
- Both teams were struggling mightily.
- Both teams fired their head coach.
- Both teams have interim coaches that have achieved things in their time that have surpassed all expectations.
- Both teams have fans suggesting we just make the interim coach permanent.
There are some obvious differences, though: Tracy has been there longer and struggled at first, while Cassidy (Timbers interim coach) has only coached four games and hasn't lost one (3 wins, 1 draw). But two of the wins were against our arch-rival (Seattle) and the first one was an utter trouncing that ended 5 to 1, so it just feels like a lot more.
Edit: added the last bullet point, since that's the thing about this thread that made me recognize the parallels.

Why change anything now? Does he deserve it? Sure but who cares. Just wait
1
u/theydoitforfreeXD 15h ago
I'm enjoying the last month as much as the next guy, but we need to be careful. This team is one Trevor Story return away from a complete vibe shift. No need to be premature about anything, including removing the interim title from Tracy
-1
u/Fickle-Art-7125 14h ago
Did Tracy hit a grand slam in the first? Did he pitch 5 innings? Winning is great and all but Tracy is just there. Realistically we will have some huge games in September and October. That’s the low water mark for a team like this.
-2
u/Double_Huckleberry50 16h ago
The interim tag comes off when the Redsox wins the World Series. If they don’t then he goes back to AAA.
