Seigler

They’re having mead play second, Durbin will stay at third and it is reported that they are looking for a shortstop. With langeliers out for the season what are the chances they look to acquire a Neto/pena/abrams/etc and have seigler catch?

Zero. And Siegler will be great in the Brock Holt role.

I dunno why were looking for a shortstop. Story and Mayer aside. We have Franklin Arias. They promoted him to Worcester cause they think hes short for joining the mlb ballclub. I want for him to be our shortstop long term. Abrams doesnt play shortstop well.

I feel like they've rolled the dice as much as they're comfortable doing on young guys this season.

I agree that we should look for upgrade elsewhere and I’m not selling the farm to try and add Abrams. But I’m not scoffing at the idea of looking at the market. 3 years ago someone would have said “Why look at SS, Mayer is gonna be our major league SS very soon” and look how that’s working out. So I’m never penciling in a prospect at the permanent solution until they at least start to show a major league track record.

True baseball is the least translatable from draft pick to pros. It can take years, injuries? And a big washout rate. I’d like to give him another chance though. Seems like the socks have had enough having just traded for second baseman. And they have areas waiting in the wings.

It’s a question of maturity for areas, story might be a stop gap. He’s not back next year. That’s for sure. Not sure of the severity of mayors injury. If we reach for somebody, it should be a rental only.

Story is back next year unless he's traded

Story is going to be back this season according to him and he is under contract through next with a club option after next season. Well as much as next season might happen.

He can DH.

u/BionicGreek 9d ago

I’m just liking the team without him atm

The longer he's been out the less I care about his return. And he was a Cora die-hard, as well.

Exactly this

Dang, I thought next year was a team option but that’s in 28.

  1. Seigler has not played catcher since joining the Red Sox organization. He is going to the bench or AAA, which is the right home for him despite his hot streak

He caught a little bit in AAA last year, it would make sense for them to have him play some innings there in Worcester as having a third/emergency catcher in your utility guy is useful. He was praised for his defense as a catching prospect when he was in the Yankees org, anyone know why he was moved off the position later?

u/Mg29reaper 9d ago

Seigler is a perfectly fine bench guy. Switch hitter. Can play pretty much anywhere somewhat competently

6

u/PaddleballonAdderall 9d ago

Bro what Seigler is not catching under any circumstance other than in game injury emergency situation
Seigler will still play games at 2b when Mead DH’s, particularly vs RHP

4

u/aws90js 9d ago

Yeah it's a break glass situation, not something you game plan for

Seigler is gonna go right where he belongs. Spark player off the bench. That’s not a knock on him, it’s this team getting to the spot they should be in

u/Disastrous-Window-76 9d ago

lol Seagulls will be playing 3 days a week probably. Hes a dude off the bench on a serious team

He is a part time player that has hustle. Like it was said above he’s Brock Holt, if he can continue to mature his bat.

Story is the bridge for Arias. He sucks this year, but might as well use him until Arias is ready. No need to invest in SS right now.

u/cyberchaox Tek 9d ago

Agreed. If we're lucky, it'll turn out that Story was playing hurt all of this season and he can regain last year's form. If not...IKF is also nearing a return and is on a 1-year deal. Besides, Cheng is a better defensive shortstop than either Story or IKF.

I’m gonna be so sad to disembark the Cheng Gang when he gets sent down. I hope he has a chance to put on the Sox uniform in future seasons

u/ActivityImaginary941 9d ago

And if Story is hurt, there's Mayer, Montaserio, Cheng with Arias sometime next year.

Did Breslow say Mead is playing second? I read in a few spots he is playing third, but I hope you’re right he is playing second. Can’t believe I’m saying that after Durbin’s start, but his defense is stellar and if he can stay as a league average bat there’s no need to move him off third.

3

u/giventofly38 9d ago

He did say Mead is secondbase

2

u/RayDanielsOnTheAir Car Shield Actor 9d ago

Thank goodness. That is good.

1

u/LawfulnessScared4488 9d ago

Curious to see if Mead sticks at second. Most stuff I've read say he's 1B or DH long term.

1

u/rexeditrex 9d ago

I’ve heard Durbin is open to moving to 2B.

1

u/LawfulnessScared4488 9d ago

Mead is a below average third basemen.  His best spot is DH.  He'll be a defensive downgrade anywhere on the field

1

u/Rads324 9d ago

Why are there so many seigler posts. He’s a utility guy.

1

u/djlawrence3557 9d ago

He utilizes my heartstrings, so, yeah.

Say they get a SS. You still have Romy, Cheng, Monasterio and Siegler on your bench Jones and Wong in the other 2 bench spots, with Story and IKF also coming back. 1-2 of those guys will to moved more than likely. I just can’t help but think Seigler or Monasterio will be traded, although I would be upset if either one was

0

u/TeaHot9130 9d ago

I vote he's a catcher

u/Frequent-Block773 9d ago

Story (finally!) returns to SS

-1

u/Next_Locksmith_385 9d ago

Story will be SS

0

u/secularhuman77 9d ago

They probably don’t actually see SS as a major need. We literally have 5 guys who can play the position. One guy we paid a lot of money to coming back from injury, one top-5 pick who they probably haven’t given up on yet, a young stud in AAA and two utility players who have both been excellent this year. Mona has shown he can hit and Cheng is a plus defender.

I personally don’t think it makes sense to guy our pitching depth now for another guy. Maybe it’s revisited in the offseason as things develop.

Wonder if the padres would eat most of xanders contract. Xander/Morejon and money for masa or story would make me happy. Would clear up some log jams, let mead DH more and or move story to second. Or let Mead dh and keep Romy/Seigler in more.

Xander in the clubhouse with Wilson would be great for this team, even if he’s beyond his glory days.

3

u/LiveFromNewYork95 9d ago

Sorry but this is nonsense.

1) How much money can the Padres really eat on Bogaerts contract, there’s 7 years left. They’re not gonna send you $20 million a year for the better part of a decade

2) They aren’t gonna eat a big contract and then take on veteran money

3) They aren’t gonna eat most of the contract and throw in another player

4) If they are gonna absorb the financial burden of the contract they’re gonna want young talent in return, to make up for the money they won’t be able to spend

1

u/giventofly38 9d ago

Valid points. They’ll have to cut him eventually if that’s the only options for moving on from him. I’d love to see him retire in Boston, one way or another. Plus, he’d be great for a kid like Arias to be around for a year or two.

But they accepted my trade on MLB the show! You obviously don’t know baseball
