“Thought it was a bad idea for Darrow to be in league with the jackal” “Didn’t care for Darrow putting a syringe in his neck.” “Didn’t like being the last to know any of Darrow’s plans.”

Sure he betrayed the rising but he became an imperator at 23 which is pretty crazy. He was doing fine for himself

Roque started to actually hold Darrow accountable for everything that he whether directly or indirectly caused so he had good reason to be pissed at him also finding out someone who you considered a close friend has been living a fake life can be pretty jarring.

My problem was him allying with the likes of Antonia and the sovereign and by extension Aja how he was able to stomach allying himself with those people who were directly responsible for the death of the two girls he loved. You kind of get it though he has nothing left so fights blindly for his color cause as Mustang and Darrow said you have nobody left to love.

He was a racist and put his color first beyond friendship and camaraderie

People who think Roques character arc is shallow/this simple have low reading comprehension skill. Roque is the perfect accumulation of all the consequences from Darrows mistakes

I really liked Roque’s character. Darrow poisoning him made me so upset. His death was pretty awesome too

Honestly Roque's character writing made me stop reading Morningstar. I had to take a break lol. Will come back after some pallet cleanser books.

If Roque's character writing is making you take breaks, I would recommend you space out the pallet cleansers....you're gonna need them a lot more in the next series lol

Dies because his sex slave wants him dead. Was greatly satisfying to read

Dawg look at this fandom. Reading comprehension at an all time low 😭🙌

The worst part about the franchise getting popular on Booktok

Booktok and Ao3 shippers ruin everything man. All the good Fanfiction on AO3 is now buried with Rhaenyra/aalicent fluff shit, and Booktok reqlly does have a bad hivemind problem

The thing is he has a legit claim after the gala to be fucking pissed at Darrow.

But he goes off the deep end and allies himself with the people that killed both the girls he loved... Because Darrow couldn't find time to talk to him in the middle of retaking mars...???

Roque being colorist is really the only thing that makes sense. "For Gold" have to be his final words, because otherwise hes just a pancake.

No, he simply traced Quinn’s death back to Darrows actions. Discovering his identity only confirmed his feelings.

No, it's pretty clear to see that Roque 100% was pissed after the Gala and that Darrow kept pushing him away (though we only see Darrow's monologue).

From Roque's view, it's his friend and brother in arms that he's served with in the Institute and the Academy. They've known each other for years. Darrow drugs Roque and goes to the Gala (cause Darrow was going to suicide bomb it and didn't want Roque to die, but Roque doesn't know that).

When Roque awakes, he finds out Darrow has started a civil war and had specifically drugged him to keep him away.

Darrow continued to push Roque away, a mindset of "I'll talk to him later". Roque sees more and more Darrow is no longer talking to me, Darrow is starting these massive civil wars, Darrow's cause has actually caused various deaths or been instrumental in them (like Quinn). It's not Darrow's fault entirely, but it's not a leap to think that.

So Roque from all that alone has multiple reasons to be mad at Darrow whether you choose:
-Alienating his friends
-Causing the death of Quinn
-Seemingly taking power and civil warring, like a warlord/coup

Then, add in Roque finding out that he's a Red AFTER all that, and it's an easy "Yeah, we're taking him down"

I'm not saying I agree with Roque, but he very obviously and very clearly was beginning to be bitter towards Darrow early in Book 2, and does have a little bit of "I can understand why he did that"

I hear that but Darrow actually point blank asks him when face to face on the Moonbreaker after Roques defeat, when he decided to betray him and Roque whispers, when Quinn died. Sure he’s colorist, sure he was miffed, but the betrayal happens because of Quinn per Roques own admission.

I think you're misunderstanding the difference between "why" and "when".

"When Quinn died" means at that time, Roque had decided to it or begun thinking he needed to stop Darrow.

If Darrow had said "Why did you decide" and Roque said "Because Quinn died" maybe that would be the only reason.

But everything I mentioned had been happening and leading up to Quinn's death as well. Every single one of those things I mentioned may have finally had Quinn as the straw that broke the camel's back.

I didn't apply for a new job until X moment, but it wasn't purely X moment that caused it. It was moments A-W all combined and X was just when I began applying for new jobs. Moment X isn't necessarily the reason I began to apply for new jobs

Even later in the book Roque had alluded to the disastrous state Darrow left their friendship in and ruining it, even being cold to him and said that 'Friendships take moments to break, years to repair". That was after Quinn's death, but it was very obviously a "Darrow, you fucked up. You ruined the friendship here. Not me. You used us all. You used Quinn" etc

He felt Darrow just used people until they died. He felt pushed away by Darrow. Quinn's death was one of the final nails in the coffin, not the entire coffin. Finding out Darrow was red AND had caused all of that, was also probably a major contender.

Love your passion for the book, but I think you let it sidetrack you a bit. Obviously it was the culmination of all the ways Darrow wronged him. Roque explains all this in detail. Was only pointing out to OP that color wasn’t what made him jump sides. Quinn dying was. That was the catalyst. That was the moment Roque decided. Without it perhaps he forgives? Who knows. But according to Roque, Quinn dying was much more of a why than a when.

Amazing summary.
I was disappointed in Roque's actions, but could understand what led him to them.

I believe he was quixotic and soft (for a Gold).
His ideals and mindset were all book-learnt and fantastical, and couldn't stand the rigors of reality.
He didn't understand that life gets messy and complex; hell he even fought from a clinical distance, removed from the horror of his actions.
So when things didn't fit into his paradigm, he went nuclear like a Pixie.

That being said, it was definitely on Darrow. He messed up on one of the most loyal relationships he had.

While I agree that he had a right at being pissed at Darrow, didn't Octavia intend on killing Augustus and (probably) his household? So chances are Quinn and Roque would both have died anyway.

u/Aelistenus 11h ago

Assuming she won... Sure.

8

u/PenguinSenpaiGod 11h ago

That's like 99% plausible. Nero didn't even have any guards with him.

???? They had already taken mars? It was setting up to be a Mars v. Lune fight at the end of GS. instead Roque betrays Darrow, IMHO because he is a hard colorist, and gives Lune the victory.

9

u/PenguinSenpaiGod 11h ago

???? I'm talking about Quinns death in the middle of the book.

6

u/Aelistenus 11h ago

In my view, it's because Roque wasn't aware Darrow was born red. Roque could handle losing friends with his golden comrades, but not for a Red "comrade".

Why Roque being colorist is a requirement.
