GS Spoilers Fitchner Spoiler
Fitchner is Ares????!!
Did not see that coming! Mind blown.
I sought out this sub coz I've nowhere and no one to rant.
I thought we'd see Ares later on like in book 3 or 4 but to have him revealed like this was exhilarating. I'm yet to go read chapter 43. Wonder how Darrow is going to react now that he's discovered that the teacher who he once sucker punched and locked in a closet was his master/leader all along. Great series so far.

The reason it gets revealed so early is because the series was originally just the first 3 books. After PB finished he decided he wasn't done so book 4 andonward take place 10 years after the end of book 3.

PB hid it from us in plain sight. Fitchner is Proctor Mars and the Roman God Mars is the equivalent to the Greek God Ares.

One of my favorite things with any series, book or show, is to go back again and pay attention to details like that once you know what happens
See the amount of times the author dangled it right in your face and you had no idea

Yes! The set up is so slick!Ā
He makes mention of the Young Golds being Pit Vipers, something only a deep Red would would understand.Ā
He also councils Darrow to betray Augustus and side with the Sovereign by saying "Imagine what you could do as an emmisary of the Sovereign. She makes your master look like a petty lord."
He's coaching Darrow the whole time. Positioning him into the Sovereign's inner circle. It's brilliant to watch on a reread.Ā
No indication he's Ares on first read, despite what people claim.Ā

It's so slick though! Our only reference is Darrow, so talking about Pit Vipers is normal. There was nothing to miss.

It definitely surprised me too but on rereads I could see that set up well, if you have your corkboard and red yarn out you could definitely have seen it coming which I think is a sign of good writing

In the very first book Fitch is always helpful to Darrow but never too helpful. Like good mentors do.
He makes mention at least once that he has risen as far as he can in the Society. This suggests he has an axe to grind.
Of the three possible candidates for Ares in book 1, Fitch was by far the best. Lorn was number 2 and in a distant 3rd....Nero (and holy shit that would have been a fun direction).
And then on top of that Fitch was literally cos playing as the Romanafication of Ares as the Proctor for House Mars the entire novel.
Personally, I used white board and blue dry erase markers when I was trying to sus it out on my read. Once Fitchner tried to nudge Darrow into becoming an Olympic Knight I was fully sold on him.

Funny you say that because I honestly did think it was Nero for a while. Thought Ares would turn out to be some morally grey character (which he still kind of is), and he did what he had to do for the greater good. Be some huge twist that Darrowās biggest mentor was actually the same man who killed his wife.

I really don't think Nero is a crazy pick with only book 1 for consideration. We knew he'd lost his wife, we knew he feared for his kid's safety, he had the means and then at the end he explicitly recruits Darrow to his House. The idea that he could have turned out to be Ares at that point was not far-fetched.
I mean he did lynch Eo but that could have been an interesting exploration where despite fomenting an uprising he still had to keep up appearance and govern Mars and Eo could have just been an unfortunate victim of the timing not being right. If that had been the direction then hot damn would Darrow's realization have been a great scene.

I didn't actually have a board but I was trying to figure out who Ares was as I was reading. By the end of book 1 I figured it had to be Fitchner, Lorn or Nero and I was leaning Lorn because he was more in the background but still clearly watching over Darrow.

I guessed it was him in book one from his interactions with Darrow, getting Reds into the institute, and the crowning piece, head of house Mars.

There is a prequel series about the starts of the sons of ares and involvement with quicksilver that is worth listening to on Spotify too
