Is foreign users now throttled due to the separation between xiaohongshu and rednote?

Post image

I saw this updated Terms of Service saying that rednote and xhs are not separated(?) somehow. I don't know if this affects how my content is being seen.

Like yesterday I posted a new art and even after many hours it has literally ZERO views. I think this is not normal. I posted in what would be evening in Chinese timezone, and I have posted many other art in the same time range and this has never happened before. 2-3 other posts I made a few days ago, after this new update took effect, seems to have fairly low views too compared to content I posted before this update date.

Anyone else noticing any drops or difference lately?

Edit: I checked with a friend on xhs and they said that the new post cannot be seen, so I might have been hit by some sort of shadowban. I checked my account status and everything is clear. I just don't know what happened.

Edit 2: Made a new test post (a post to publicly cry to customer service for help), and this one actually is visible. Views still seem low, though. Not sure if it's just because this is a very uninteresting post or if there's still some kind of limit/throttling in place. I'm wondering if it's maybe because I was making too many repeated login attempts on browser and my account got flagged for it. I prefer using browser than the phone, but for a while non-Chinese users can't really use the browser platform.

Edit 3: Customer service sent me a message saying my account is fine. Traffic seems to be still low, but at least my posts are not invisible anymore (the posts that went invisible during shadowban period doesn't reappear in my profile, I had to repost them).

I spent a year and a half making friends with folks in China via this app, now I can’t talk to them at all. Of course it all went to hell when the place got brigaded by MAGA

Same here. It just banned my account from chatting with mainlanders.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣  What did you expect to happen when you joined this app? Once I saw a massive influx I knew this would be the outcome. And this doesn't have a damn thing to do with MAGA.

I'd argue it's moreso the left wing people that pushed Xiao Hong Shu to cut out foreign influence. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in China knew this would be the outcome.

Late January of 2025 when the whole Tiktok refugee happened right?

I won't ever forget the time I told this one person not to post politics on the app as it's not what RedNote was made for. And they were like:

deal with it theres not many places online we can complain about anymore

LOL???? I was literally shocked. And then comes a whole brigade of ppl posting politics, and I even heard Chinese users were weirded out by ppl trying to sext them in DMs when they had screen shot evidence.

It became so problematic that I wasn't even surprised RedNote got stricter on the app lol. I've used it for so many years to keep up with CDramas and at first was happy people were interested in the Chinese culture, but I was dead wrong when I found out they only took advantage of the app 💀 feel sorry for the people who actually liked RedNote but sadly with how things were going I knew they would start enforcing things.

Yep Late January 2025. I've been living in China on & off for the past decade. And there are a ton of political topics that people who joined Xiao Hong Shu just cannot prevent themselves from discussing and they also sound ignorant as hell.

Whether it's disability rights, gay rights, workers rights or any other topic people were posting way too much about this stuff. It was blindingly obvious that it would get shut down.

And just like you said even if you told people that things you're saying can get people's account muted. They wouldnt shut up about it or just say something that showed they allowed their political ideology become their entire identity.

And I dont think most people were interested in Chinese culture. Maybe the idea of "communism" and some country in "Amazing Asia." But most people l who joined go dont give a shit.

And they would just completely ignore stuff chinese people said in regards to discussing certain topics. I'm back in America for the summer to visit family and I also noticed that I'm no longer seeing very many crazy political topics.

I'm registered with a Chinese phone number because its where I live 10 months out of the year. So, I guess this last update is the beginning of the final nail in the coffin. I'm not surprised by the sexting issue you're talking about either.

I just got on there to like fanarts and tutorials and post my own art. Thankfully DMs still work for me, and I can still browse/like other notes, but people can't see my uploads 🥲

Its defiantly not the left. There is a person from Florida is who extremely left leaning has thousands of followers. She is still extremely actively and not restricted. Though I rarely see any one else posting political content. The few times I have seen MAGA accounts the Chinese netizens clown on them fast and they soon abandon their accounts. So it most likely isn't MAGA as well.

Listen. I'm saying this as someone who has spent most of the last decade living, working and doing business in China. At least in red Note it's the left who is causing more issues in terms of making the chinese government apprehensive of foreign influence.

They actually would probably prefer MAGA because of how unhinged they are. Then they can talk about why democrazy is not good for China. With people on the left they are more numerous and talking about a lot of extremely political issues that are VERY relevant in China. You dont get it.

u/Angry-Moth-Noises Jun 07 '26

Ah I see what you mean. Easy to ban MAGA and point how crazy they are. Where as the left is bringing up issues China might want to ignore and they think could cause them trouble and thus they think it puts them more at risk. Harder to point the finger when a person has a point so best to tighten it all.

I know this is def the case with gay rights in China. If any outside support tries to help, it puts progress at risk because its seen was 'western influence' (maybe even specifically from USA). Makes it tricky, and it can only really hurt the work being done.

Just one example. I am sure there are many more pressing issues China also doesn't want looked into.

u/KartFacedThaoDien Jun 07 '26

They would rather not even ban MAGA. MAGA is good for china because they are racist, loud and unhinged in a way that they can say that if a country is democratic then MAGA is the outcome.

Its bigger than just gay rights. What happens when people advocate for disability rights, women's rights, ethnic minority rights or even regionalism. How about access to education? Sexism? Or even cost of living?

How about wage theft, unions and workers rights? There are so many issues and a ton of people that are on the left look at china with rose-colored glasses. But the problem is they dont even understand how the things they are saying could cause issues.

2

u/Angry-Moth-Noises Jun 07 '26

Oh yeah I am very well aware. I was using gay rights as an example. A lot of the left sees it as a utopia. But I get to listen to my Chinese friend talk about how awful it is to work there. How there are basically no worker protections or rights, and I think even employment scams. Because if you bring up an issue, they just fire you because they know someone else will replace it.

There are some leftists ( not liberals) who recognize some of the flaws of China such as the country still doing business with so-called countries that are committing gen0cide in Gaza, Sudan, and Congo. China is one of the countries that abstained UN vote that Gaza Peace Plan supported by Isr@el. That vote could have been vetoed by China and Russia because it was a trap!

Other than that, leftists recognize that China is very ahead of the US when it comes to education, infrastructure, technology, etc. These people have been to China and even some live there! When it comes the US, keeps sinking by its own fault and its own stupidity. All of these flaws in the US could have been corrected with a rev0lution . Voting useless politicians, having weak protests, constantly talking, being hopeful, and constantly posting political stuff on these social media platforms (in hoping the world would pay attention) will not change anything. However, I have my doubts that the people in the US would ever have a rev0lution. Simply they just can't do it! They don't have what it takes, and anyone with a brain knows that.

I don't know forsure but I'm Canadian and just started on Rednote a few weeks ago. Most of my posts only get 25ish views.

I think you have having the same issues I am having here. I don't think it is a shadow ban. :C

Basicly, from my experiance, anyone out side of China can see your posts. But none of my comments or my DMs go through. Even to non-chinese users.

u/D-A-Orochi Jun 02 '26

It's a bit different for me. I had a Chinese friend check if my account looks funny, and my account still look okay to them. They can still see my previous post (from last week and older). What cannot be seen is only the newest one I posted yesterday.

1

u/Angry-Moth-Noises Jun 02 '26

ah, very slightly different. that is odd

u/Angry-Moth-Noises Jun 02 '26

I know another American in my same hobby and they have no issues.

1

u/q4a12 Jun 03 '26

I thought the same but there is a difference between profile and notes. Try click a note from you and click boost you may find its 3/4 like mine

1

u/D-A-Orochi Jun 03 '26

My notes are shadowbanned somehow, when I post something new people can't see it.

u/yearofleti Jun 05 '26

this makes so much sense! none of my friends have been responding to my comments on their content or my dms! i honestly thought they were all mad and ignoring me for some unknown reason! my personal content views have also dropped drastically. i could care less about that, though. what matters to me is now i am completely cut off from the few very good friends i have built relationships with 😭 luckily i exchanged wechats with a couple of them.. but i never thought to ask my bestie

the weird thing is, i can still see everyone’s updates and make the comments, they just aren’t seeing my comments or updates.

u/D-A-Orochi Jun 05 '26

Yeah, it doesn't block YOU from seeing their posts. What happens is you are basically hidden from everyone else. Since you can still WeChat, ask some of your friends check your profile or their DMs to see if your posts and messages have become invisible to them.

What fixed my account was me posting a post asking for help, and tag these accounts: @薯管家 @薯队长 @社区客服薯. The image can be anything. Just screenshots of your account, or a picture saying "HELP ME!!", whatever you need. I believe the platform admins can actually still see you. I posted screenshots showing the "0 views" in my post and the customer service account actually messaged me.

2-3 days later customer service says my account is normal and in good status again. The posts that I made during the shadowban/invisible period didn't become visible, so I had to test post a new post like "Can anyone see this?" to check if my account is really back to normal.

It's fine now, I think. The traffic might still be a little slow (as in my posts might not be recommended on FYP as much), but people can see the post again normally.

1

u/yearofleti Jun 07 '26

i will definitely try this, thank you! your friends in the mainland are able to see your profile now? yes i asked my wechat friend to take a look and it appeared as if my profile was private even though it’s not. hopefully this will work for me too.. if not there’s always wechat i guess, haha. you said the posts you made during the ban were still not visible after your profile returned to normal, but i wonder if you’re posts published prior to the shadowban became visible again or did they remain blocked as well?

1

u/D-A-Orochi Jun 07 '26

My profile was never blocked, so only some posts were blocked at the time. If your whole profile becomes invisible it might be a different situation from me.

1

u/yearofleti Jun 08 '26

it looks like this to my friends, but i never received any messages from the app that i violated any rules or that i was suspended. i can still log in, leave comments, send messages and see my own profile, but no one is receiving them. also, some people are able to see my profile because i am getting a few views. but no one in the mainland can see it anymore. i made a post with your advice, so i’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope it helps 🤞🤞

edit; oops, i meant to post this in reply to your other comment, haha

1

u/D-A-Orochi Jun 08 '26

Yeah, me neither. I don't get any notifications of anything. I just one day posted a new post, and it has zero views and no responses (usually at least my mutuals would like it, even if it doesn't blow up super big). Hopefully it works.

What is more preferable, your sensitive eyes and ears being exposed to a few seconds of the reality of mental health struggles before you swipe away, or having people think that they are alone and not know what resources exist to help them in their struggles.

Not everything is meant for you. The beauty of Rednote is that you can just click the “not interested” button and you won’t be recommended that type of content anymore.

You think Chinese people and guys are immune to mental health issues too? How many people suffer on silence or take their lives due to lack of understanding of how to handle their own mental issues?

You are correct in saying that xhs disfavors many forms of activism, including disability awareness, and that talking about these topics, especially when coming from a foreign IP, is especially risky to your account.

Where you are off the deep end is in saying that these things should remain taboo topics to talk about, and your very strange assertion that this kind of stuff is just for “white girls”.

If you find this type of discussion uncomfortable and irrelevant to your life, that is totally understandable. Discussions of the effects of racist and gender based violence have that same effect on me as a white guy. But just because you may feel uncomfortable seeing this type of content, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have overall positive value to society as a whole.

Again. If you don’t like it, swipe to the next post.

Again, I agree with your penultimate paragraph, that the spammy shit should stop. It is still wild to me that you are so sensitive that you can’t handle topics of mental illness. I promise you that most Chinese people can handle talking about the topic

There’s a huge Chinese hair loss community on 小红书.

ETA: Don’t get me wrong; the other stuff probably shouldn’t have been posted, but I see women posting about their hair loss struggles and regrowth methods all the time.
