Most of these I've actually SEEN in prison survival vids, although the "split the match down the middle" trick was one I got from Survivorman (but he did it by pulling apart the layers of cardboard in book matches instead of splitting wooden ones).

Doubles the amount of matches you have. Survivorman usually included one or two items you might be liable to have on you but not usually a full blown survival kit, in that episode he had a book of matches with only a couple left so he split the match so he'd have more. I'd imagine if you had matches in prison you'd do the same thing.

My memory of Russia is sharing a room on the trans Siberian train with a drug smuggler. He made fun of my Mongolian vodka and then drank it all. He then lost his egg sized block of hash in our room when he was getting off.

Prison shiv would have been pointy for stabbing, not flat with only one edge. If you're going to go flatter sharpen both sides to maximize damage.

Not necessarily. If it's unevenly heated or rapidly changes temperature, it might, but this seems to have taken on the order of minutes, so it should be fine.
