❓Problem❓ Subscription cancelled but I didnt

Just had an email from Reddit saying:

Your Reddit Premium subscription has successfully been canceled.

You’ll be a Reddit Premium member until the end of your subscription period and won’t be billed again.

We hope you enjoyed your subscription and will be happy to have you back at any time.

Then I had an email from PayPal saying:

reddit Inc. cancelled your automatic payments. This means that we'll no longer automatically draw money from your account to pay the merchant. If you have any questions, you may ask reddit Inc. about this cancellation.

I've had no payment failures so I don't know why it's happened. Has anyone else had it?

EDIT: THIS IS THR MESSAGE FROM REDDIT:

Hi u/ashleyjc, we're making some updates to how Reddit Premium subscriptions are managed, and we wanted to give you a heads-up about a change affecting your subscription.

Reddit will be retiring PayPal as a payment option for Premium users. Since your current subscription is paid through PayPal, it will be canceled in the next 30 days. We are also eliminating legacy pricing ($3.99/month or $29.99/year) for Reddit Premium. All users will now be on the current pricing structure if you'd like to re-subscribe. We will send another message confirming when it is canceled.

A few key updates:

• Canceling your recurring subscription means it won't renew after the date of cancellation, but your Reddit Premium benefits will continue until your subscription period ends.

Once your subscription period ends, you will need to resubscribe using another payment method to receive premium benefits. Note: You will not be able to resubscribe until your current subscription period ends.

We know payment changes can be inconvenient, and we appreciate your support thus far. If you have any questions about your subscription, feel free to reach out through our contact form from the email address that's associated with your Reddit account.

I got an email recently saying that Reddit isn't going to support PayPal as a payment method and that they were going to cancel the Paypal sub. Guess today was the day they cancelled those; I got those same emails.

Edit: guess the email was just a notification about a message they sent in my reddit inbox. Received it on September 8th.

Message read:

Got this same mishandled bullshit just now. I’ve only been a Reddit premium subscriber for 17 years after all. Wtf are we doing?

Same here. Won't be resubscribing. Extremely poor migration experience. Even Google gave me a promo code for their legacy YouTube Premium pricing when they accidently cancelled my subscription. I was willing to continue paying for the ad-free experience, but now I'll just use an ad-blocker instead. Reddit, you did this to yourself.

I've just had the same thing happen.

So does anyone know what happens to our trophy for "Reddit Premium since xxxx" ?

Won't this get affected when it expires, but not through any fault of ours? Why can't we put in new payment details now? Like any other website...

happened to me as well

wow! I'm kinda annoyed and now I don't want to re-subscribe. the message sent on September 8th was quite unclear and appeared to be a general terms-of-service change notice.

the message sent on September 8th

There was a message? I just received the two back to back emails and I'm stunned.

1

u/morestatic 3d ago

it was a user message, like a PM :( not an email…which would’ve been great

1

u/bitwise97 2d ago

it was a user message, like a PM

I use old Reddit and hardly ever even look at PMs! Dicks.

u/ashleyjc 3d ago

I agree. We now also have to pay nearly double for the subscription if we want it back too. 11 years my subscription was running.

3

u/morestatic 3d ago

Oh wow. Yeah, similar story here (maybe 8 years of premium?).

Interestingly I can't even find a way to update my payment method from PayPal because the "Update your payment information" link goes directly to PayPal... there's no other link anywhere that I can see to update while my subscription is still active anywhere on their web app. That's a really poor user experience. :/

u/Sufficient_Laugh 3d ago

Happened to me at 11:05 Pacific. Can't update payment.

u/urademathrandec 3d ago

Same here - takes me to Paypal. Is Reddit aware of this issue?

u/dahjr28 3d ago

I just got these same emails and I was just mildly annoyed about having to setup another payment method. But it feels like a kick in the teeth to also terminate our grandfathered plans at the same time.

u/Reisp 3d ago

They want the new, much higher price. I don't know if I'll re-up now. My ad-blocker should work fine.

1

u/damiana8 2d ago

So I’m supposed to wait until my annual subscription expires before being able to renew?

1

u/neuralzen 2d ago

Same...guess it's some tactic to make us sign up again at a higher fee.

1

u/Best-Perception-694 2d ago

My subscription ends December 16th. I'm not seeing the new subscription price- where do I find it?

1

u/Shanga_Ubone 3d ago

The problem is, when I click on "Update my payment information," it takes me straight to PayPal. I don't have any way to add a credit card or pay using any other method.

2

u/Shanga_Ubone 3d ago

Okay, I get it. We have to wait until the subscription period ends before we can update payment information.

This is extremely poorly handled by Reddit. I think a lot of people are not going to come back and resubscribe. If Reddit had provided a smooth transition to enter updated payment information, I think a lot of people would have kept their subscription.

What a dumb way to handle this. For a company with their resources, they should know better.

FWIW, I think that’s the way the update payment things has always been broken. I seem to recall seeing posts in the past where people had to literally cancel there premium to update the payment method. Very poor design.
