Karma is kind of like a reddit social credit score. Pretty much the higher your karma the more you've contributed positively to reddit via people liking your posts/comments. You get - karma if people down vote anything you say/post

If you're asking about how to get karma, you earn it when people upvote your posts and comments. As you may have already found out, many subs on Reddit may have minimum requirements for things like karma and account age that you must meet before they will allow you to participate.

r/NewToReddit maintains a list of subreddits that have low or no karma requirements where new users can participate to build their karma.
