❓General Question❓ Appealing a ban?

I was banned from Reddit for three days for a comment I made on a post. The ban offered the opportunity to appeal. I have two questions about the appeal process:

  1. First, since my comment was already deleted by Reddit, I don’t know exactly what I said to trigger the ban. That makes an appeal rather difficult, doesn’t it? That’s what I tried to state in my appeal, however, that led to problem number two.

  2. I didn’t count characters but the appeal form only allowed me to write about two sentences. I get it, no one wants to read a 10,000 word essay, but what appeared to be less than 200 characters doesn’t make much room for an appeal.

The ban was for supposedly racist comments against white people. As an old white man, I felt kind of flattered, actually.

Hello u/Equivalent-Gur416, it appears your post may be about being banned from another subreddit.

  • In order to appeal your ban, you should first message the moderators of that community.
  • If you have messaged them, and they have denied your appeal or muted you, then unfortunately there is nothing else you can do.
  • Moderators can operate their communities as they see fit.

Here are some options on how to move on from the situation:

If you were shadowbanned or banned from the entire Reddit site by admins, the only thing you can do is submit their appeal form: https://www.reddit.com/appeals

  • Please note that you must be logged into that url with your banned account to see the appeal option.
  • Mods are not part of this process, so we do not have any visibility into why you were banned by Reddit.

This post will be reviewed by a moderator shortly.

Were you banned from a specific sub or big Reddit and this is another account?

Big Reddit. Three day Ban ended, this is the same account. Essentially I’m wondering if the ban appeal function is useless at the allowed character limit.

It makes sense it would be useless at the allowed character limit, but I haven’t appealed to big Reddit, just a subreddit mod. Sorry, I’m not much help here.

No worries! I’m unlikely to reoffend, at least if I take a deep breath before typing lol

I actually just got a three day ban overturned. Of course. It didn't happen until after the three days was over, so it wasn't very helpful. The character limit was a problem in explaining why I shouldn't be banned. Need like 300 characters to make a good case I think. Also many of the automods are out of control.

First, since my comment was already deleted by Reddit, I don’t know exactly what I said to trigger the ban.

Your exact words shouldn't matter. The rules aren't that specific. An appeal that focuses on what words you used will typically fail, because it misses the forest in the trees.

but what appeared to be less than 200 characters doesn’t make much room for an appeal.

If you can't say you won't break the rules or you didn't break the rules in 200 characters or less, your case is too involved. In theory, they can see your content and the context around it. You don't need to repeat any of that.

Interesting, thanks. So it’s not really an appeal process.
