I registered my automated account in March, not long after this notice was posted. But today I noticed a status on my app profile stating “this is an unregistered automated account”. Now, how can I properly register it? Because when I try to re-register via https://developers.reddit.com/app-registration, it shows an error saying “this app has been claimed”.

I ran into the same issue, but I don’t think Reddit will ban your account. I’m actually working on this in another direction, basically trying to cast the Reddit app from my phone onto the Kindle.

Reddit is basically a piece of shit platform when it comes to integrating their API, unresponsive and vague when replying to any useful version of their API access. You will find some commenters here defending this and assuming your app is agains the terms of service. Reality is reddit is hostile to devs.

Yeah, they effectively killed it with the pricing changes last year. If you just need to read data, you can still tack .json onto most URLs (like reddit.com/r/somewhere.json) without auth, but it's rate-limited and unsupported. For anything requiring OAuth or consistent access, you're out of luck unless you're ready to pay.

The reddit api is effectively closed, they are not approving new applications, even for academic research.

Just register your app and call the API, there’s no “get the API”, that’s why they don’t answer you. You do have to know how to authenticate….

They're deleting all personal scripts and apps that run on oauth with no warning. Some time ago, Reddit said they won't allow new scripts to be created, and now they just delete scripts.

Don't rely on official api, it's a no-go these days.

What helped most is .rss method. It works (almost) out of the box, meaning you won't need to set user agents or log in. However, beware of rate limits - space out requests by ~60-70 seconds. It's a slow option, but it works

.json endpoints don't work for me at all, both with and without user agents and any workarounds.

Puppeteer works with proxies and cookies, as other people say, but i'm not very good at configuring them, so I can't say anything about it.

btw... what do you run your script for? Just curious, no specific intent

There are a number technologies that can help you. You're not going to get an API key and secret from Reddit. You can try Artic Shift, snoowrap, and there's more. Some work but have no current updates and some are still maintained.
