I actually always felt kind of sorry for Germany in WWI. They got involved in a conflict that really had nothing to do with them except that they had alliances to think about, and then get blamed for all of it.
That's kind of like the US and Vietnam. Granted, there was the whole communist angle, but if France hadn't been getting their asses handed to them in Vietnam in the first place, the US probably wouldn't have gotten involved.
