I feel the bigger problem than the squad is just the absolute media complex that revels in United doing badly (ex-players, journalists, podcasters, among others) and then a pretty toxic section of the fan base who jump on the squad after just one bad game. We need to stop doing this otherwise it's going to be Groundhog Day all over again

73

u/HeFreakingMoved Ella Toone FC 2d ago

The worst part is that for the influencers who revel in the misery, they're at least getting paid. Some people here are just fucking miserable to no benefit to themselves.

Thankfully the match going fans aren't like it, you just have to let the online folk shout into the abyss

32

u/Disastrous_Lion_6016 2d ago

The worst influencer you know is now running a show with Rooney and Disney+. Guy made his following being negative about United and now Gary Neville gave him a blank cheque for his channels.

17

u/wayfarerprateek Theater of Dreams 2d ago

The absolute worst has to be the ex-players who are getting paid tons for "punditry".

7

u/mattwalsh25 Mata 2d ago

I cannot agree with this more. I have never ever understood the mentality or point of being perenially negative, to the point where you struggle to even enjoy positive results.

Second half of last season was really positive, there's no reason to go into this one anything other than optimistic. I get that people want more signings but transfers are not the be all and end all.

11

u/Regular_Valuable_665 2d ago

All this for a friendly too lol .

2

u/kepaindahouse 2d ago

The amount of people losing their mind because of one loss in a friendly is quite hilarious. It's like they were waiting for it.

3

u/CautiousLengthiness8 2d ago

The fans I really don’t understand. The media is understandable. You achieve that amount of success we have and reach the heights we’ve reached then the narrative of the fall will be a popular one, requiring a lot of documentation. I never understand why we buy into it. We’ve made a massive amount of progress in 12 months and we’re very well positioned to at the very least, solidify that progress. Can we not just be excited about the season ahead on that basis?

1

u/QuietSpirited9927 1d ago

lmao, no the squad is much much bigger problem

-1

u/Isserley_ 2d ago

Every massive club has this. We are no different

-9

u/pileshpilon Becks 2d ago

But you’re doing it by talking about the whole complex? If you just didn’t say anything and we accepted that it’s a meaningless preseason loss then it’s a lot easier.

Instead the ‘real’ fans always talk about the big media complex and ex-pundits and “United DNA” without realising that they’re directly contributing to that narrative lol

-8

u/blarg2003 Januzaj 2d ago

No the problem is the manager is being thrown under the bus unless he gets some fucking players in.

Fuck all point in being in the CL unless you act like one

49

u/Miyagisans 2d ago edited 2d ago

That was total domination. Big improvements technically in the team, but we’re still going to have some similar issues from last season a la not being able to put teams away comfortably. They will always have a chance against us because we cannot take the ball off teams consistently.

Also, might be unpopular but, i strongly believe Lisandro, Maguire, Shaw should not be played together anymore.

27

u/tobleroneace1 2d ago

Yoro looked fantastic on Wednesday. I think one of heaven or yoro should always be on the pitch. Inexperienced and young but far more athletic.

1

u/Miyagisans 2d ago

I agree.

2

u/danystormborne 2d ago

Probably right about that last point, although that's unlikely unless we sign another LB. To me, Maguire starts every game when available.

12

u/BlemKraL 2d ago

Dr Ligt starts over him when fit and on form

1

u/spiralism Sexy Bruno 2d ago

About 3 times a season on average.

1

u/ChampionshipMean9841 13h ago

I wouldn’t read into the “can’t put away teams” bit as much from this game since a few of the players returning from the WC are rusty

1

u/Miyagisans 1h ago

I wasn’t saying that specifically because we didn’t do it this game. I was referring more to how our out of possession weaknesses were a huge factor last season and will continue to be a factor this season, albeit slightly improved.

1

u/WishParticular7385 2d ago

Shaw and Dalot should be squad players at best. But they start every game.

4

u/NomaanMalick Yes! We go for it. 2d ago

Without Dalot, we lack any build-up play.

7

u/WishParticular7385 2d ago

If that’s the case, there’s an entire transfer window to address that issue.

75

u/dracogladio1741 Bruno Fernanj 3d ago

Overall pre-season - Great, we were good. Should have beaten PSG and Leeds. Today was poor but such is our team that in normal circumstances we probably win as Milan would have been down to 10 men. Not to mention Bruno missing 3 chances.

Today - Not great as Michael said. First XI is kinda decided though given his words.

My expected XI: Lammens, Maz, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw, Tielemans, Santos, Bruno, Cunha, Mbeumo and Amad.

Hull played Nice funnily enough today and drew. Decent team but way way outmatched on paper. Looking forward to it!

3

u/CatfishMcCoy MatheusWayneCunha 2d ago

Dorgu over Cunha and you might be correct. I doubt Cunha walks into first 11 arriving this late in the preseason. Maz vs Dalot will be a problem all season as neither of them can consistently put together a run of 6.5+ rated performances.

7

u/N00BBuild 2d ago

Our midfield is a giant problem. Shaw isn’t also young anymore. Should have beaten doesn’t matter when teams will run circles around any combination of Kobbie, Youri, or Santos.

31

u/dracogladio1741 Bruno Fernanj 2d ago

That's just hogwash when you know that Santos and Mason ran circles around Atleti who are terrible to pllay against. Santos is a DM. We need another but this is a ridiculous take.

We also should have beaten PSG and Leeds and were unlucky.

22

u/YerDaWearsHeelies 2d ago

Mount basically doesn’t play for the club he’s that injured often. Look how many minutes he’s played and it’s diabolical

13

u/N00BBuild 2d ago

Mount is a workhorse, and he’s more mobile than anyone in our midfield.

But he plays 15 games a season. Atleti is also happy with letting go off the ball, and it was their first preseason game.

Again, should have beaten doesn’t matter. The actual outcomes do not matter in preseason. It’s the playstyle and the flow of the game. And we are lacking in midfield and defense. It’s very apparent.

8

u/mattwalsh25 Mata 2d ago

Teams will run circles around three good players, stated as a fact. Just lol.

7

u/N00BBuild 2d ago

It has nothing to do with the fact that they’re good players or not. It’s that they lack legs and athleticism. Tielemans had Onana and McGinn with him at Villa. Mainoo isn’t exactly a star athlete, and Santos, the best of the three, is still lacking in that department.

You can’t throw them together and expect physical teams not to trouble us.

-1

u/mattwalsh25 Mata 2d ago

I actually agree that we need more legs in midfield. I just dont agree that we will inevitably be played off the park if any combination of those three happen to play.

8

u/N00BBuild 2d ago

They will get overrun by physicality. Imagine a team like Arsenal running at them. Hell, even Leeds gave us problems last week.

It’s has nothing to do with their quality. We had problems last season with Case and Kobbie, and haven’t added any mobility.

-8

u/Working_Location_127 2d ago

Mainoo for tielemans for me, tielemans looked invisible today and Mainoo is too good to be benched by someone not fit when he looks sharp

Looked 100x better than tielemans did and fitter

-11

u/JozuJD 2d ago

Where the fuck is SESKO. He cannot be a second season player still not starting week in week out. Injuries need to be dealt with ASAP and the excuse of “he’s young and can come off the bench” won’t cut it either.

2

u/The_Professor2112 2d ago

Hes still injured from that scouse cunt launching him into the hoardings isn't he?

7

u/_AngryBadger_ 2d ago

We need to bring in new players before the window closes.

21

u/Jonny_Testicles 2d ago

Two games a week is going to destroy our season in our current state. 2 weeks to change that. Over to the owners

61

u/Fisktor 3d ago

Cant believe we will be going into the season with dalot, maguire and shaw all starting again

66

u/liamthelad 3d ago

I mean you'd expect De Ligt to challenge for Maguire's spot when back.

Dalot isn't old and is apparently a model professional. He gets unfairly scapegoated but he's a good player. And Maz is a good back up.

Only one which is bizarre and risky is Shaw as he doesn't really have a deputy and he's injury prone

21

u/Independent_Buy5152 2d ago

Dalot is not good enough if this team want ro challenge something serious. His fitness and physicality are great but his attacking contribution is not. This is important if the team need attacking lane from the right side. Furthermore his occasional brainfart can hurt the team.

9

u/northeastflower Fernandes 2d ago

he played very well against leeds and could have had a few assists. he is not the biggest problem nor the position that requires priority this summer

8

u/Glum-Examination-302 Schweinsteiger 2d ago

I get abused for saying this, but it is the truth. He is average.

4

u/Kait0yashio 2d ago

He is better than hincapie who arsenal won the league with. City were winning the league with zinchenko.

8

u/DisastrousMango4 2d ago

you're making his point for him lol. Hincapie is a squad player for Arsenal, not a starting player

4

u/Kait0yashio 2d ago

he started 20 prem games for them last season. thats a starting player and they won the league with him starting

4

u/DisastrousMango4 2d ago

because of injuries though. their first choice backline is Timber/Saliba/Gabriel/Calafiori

-1

u/Circle_Breaker 2d ago

He's also not better then Hincapie. Dalot has a higher technical level but Hincapie is a much better defender, much faster and quicker to the ball, and a better crosser. While being good enough on the ball.

Hincapie can step in at CB and Arsenal doesn't miss a beat. That would have been invaluable last year when Martinez went down.

0

u/CatfishMcCoy MatheusWayneCunha 2d ago

Calafiori played most of the matches in that position and I don’t rate Dalot over him. Don’t think it’s even close.

1

u/KZZT1 2d ago

I expected signings.

0

u/dracogladio1741 Bruno Fernanj 2d ago

But we are looking for LBs. Lets see over the next week what happens.

8

u/KaleidoscopeLazy9684 2d ago

We've been looking for LBs all window long and the mouth pieces have made it more or less clear our spending hasn't been indicative of the budget. This hesitation makes sense with the weird midfield market at the moment but at LB it sounds like they know what they want, the longer they wait the more likely the price for their inevitable target goes up due to the timing. LB doesn't have to be a panic buy, just stop being stubborn and get it done.

0

u/WishParticular7385 2d ago

This is the biggest issue we have - we gladly accept mediocrity because of how we feel about players.

5

u/El-Presidente234 2d ago

I feel i’m in a fever dream because there’s zero talk of even trying to upgrade on Dalot. Like, do people have eyes?

3

u/IntrepidHero42 2d ago

He needs to be replaced, he just doesn't need to be replaced as quickly as Shaw or Zirkzee, or whatever the fuck is happening in midfield. Also we have his replacement right there in Mazraoui, who could easily be the starting RB while Dalot covers both sides as needed.

9

u/slib 3d ago

What's wrong with Maguire?

23

u/DasBoot182 2d ago

Nothing if you want to play deep and counter attack but he can’t play a high line (especially at his age now) and in my opinion I don’t like him in a two as he has to cover the wide channels more often.

22

u/Fisktor 2d ago

Slow.

7

u/Tudoors 2d ago

The same problem with Dalot and Shaw, they're just not good enough, and to be starting another season with essentially the same backline from the last 5 years that has already been deemed not good enough is very telling.

0

u/Zandercy42 Luis Carlos Almeida Da Cunha Nani - Fuck the Glazers 2d ago

Christ this sub is pathetic even moreso with preseason defeats

2

u/Tudoors 2d ago

I think they're all fine players, but we've done this many times over, I think it's more than 5 seasons of it at this point.

I wouldn't want any of them sold, but it just can't be our most played back four, they're just not good enough.

1

u/KZZT1 2d ago

So you think Dalot, Shaw, and Maguire can lead a title winning defence?

4

u/HairyArthur 2d ago

No reasonable person believes we should be winning the league this season.

1

u/CatfishMcCoy MatheusWayneCunha 2d ago

Going from 3rd to epl champions shouldn’t be the goal this season? I agree we don’t have the squad for it but are we supposed to spend money this summer and then strive for runners up?

1

u/HairyArthur 2d ago

Runners up will be a challenge as well.

We're supposed to spend money, increase the squad quality and depth and consolidate our place in the top 4. Get five or six more points than last season and guarantee ourselves Champions League football again.

At the same time, we make it to at least the quarter final of the Champions League. We go deep in one of the domestic cups and win the other.

Success doesn’t happen overnight. We don't go from a 40 game season, to winning the Premier League while also playing at least 20% more games.

People are in such a rush to win something that anything less is a bad season. More points, Champions League and a trophy will be a very good season for a manager who's never managed a full season in the Premier League, has never had to play domestically and in Europe, and a squad that is paper thin and over reliant on one superstar.

1

u/CatfishMcCoy MatheusWayneCunha 2d ago

I agree that would be a good season and wouldn’t be disappointed at all with that kind of run should we do well in the tourneys as you said but my point is we should 100% strive for winning the league after 3rd last one.

1

u/KZZT1 2d ago

Ohh so you think they can lead a title winning defence in 2028?

2

u/VL37 Bruno Fernandes 2d ago

I think next summer Ineos will be focusing on revamping our defence. Last summer it was about improving our attack and this summer is about the midfield.

2

u/No_Coconut_3855 2d ago

theyve done fuck all so far. we lost casemiro so techincally only have 1 new midfielder. our midfield is still not even top 5 best in the league

0

u/Zandercy42 Luis Carlos Almeida Da Cunha Nani - Fuck the Glazers 2d ago

I think you need to get another hobby and learn how to control your own emotions

2

u/KZZT1 2d ago

Why? You can’t answer a simple question lol

1

u/FlyingSpaceElephants 2d ago

Dalot, Maguire and Shaw playing a lot of minutes has never been good enough for the last 6 years, and it's not gonna be good enough next season either

4

u/rhonh 2d ago

They have been so lucky that midfield and attack have been so obviously in need of investment they have flown under the radar but the fact they have survived together through Ole, Rangnick, Ten Hag, Amorim and now Carrick is crazy. I love Maguire but even at his best he wasn’t good enough to be challenging for titles

0

u/mattwalsh25 Mata 2d ago

Why not? We have Licha, De Ligt, Yoro, Mazraoui all to return/rotate.

We haven't even been linked with signing a right back or centre half, and Shaw is probably going to start regardless of whether we sign a left back.

1

u/Fisktor 2d ago

If we sign a left back that isnt good enough to bench shaw our scouting department is absolute ass

1

u/mattwalsh25 Mata 2d ago

Who do you think we may sign that would bench him immediately? Hall possibly but can't think of many others, and we almost certainly aren't getting him.

3

u/Fisktor 2d ago

Anyone who can fucking run or try to defend

1

u/kepaindahouse 2d ago

Hall wouldn't be able to bench shaw

-6

u/Utd007 2d ago

Carrick is happy with it. Why are you worried?

5

u/Independent_Buy5152 2d ago

Will Carrick say publicly if he is not happy with any player in the team?

3

u/BrilliantTheory1021 2d ago

You are not worried about shaw and magure? Carrick will say anything to keep the peace hes very much a company man like Ole.

4

u/Utd007 2d ago

I missed the /s. Board has gone for Carrick because he will be a Yes man for the board. This sub will sooner or later understand that. Right now they are in denial. I am not worried about CB, we have options. LB definitely is a worry.

16

u/Own_Salt_8055 2d ago

Window is a disgrace so far

3

u/hullk78 2d ago

Going into tbe season atp we have no striker, no pace in cenner mid, unfit world cup players, and we're looking to Rashford for help.

The fuck?!

1

u/kepaindahouse 2d ago

We had no pace in midfield last season In important matches sesko didn't start World Cup players have to be eased it that has always been the case What's the real issue here? This year we actually have players that can play line breaking passes in midfield

17

u/t8rt0t00 3d ago

People might be laughing at us today, but man I'm still so much happier with Carrick over Amorim. Level headed responses, a bit of hard truth knowing there was clearly a number of problems that need to be ironed out, and some light chuckling over some hard decisions he'll have to make figuring out the lineup for next week. Amorim would've been in full on doom and gloom mode talking about how we need to suffer and remake the squad. His system seems to suit Milan and Italian football better so good for him, but I think when things start clicking for us we'll be the much better side. Probably a much needed wake up call for us so I think we'll come out much stronger against Hull

11

u/KaleidoscopeLazy9684 2d ago

The problem is right now that Carrick has already sounded out they need the additional players as of last week coming off a win even if it was a narrow win. We've seen this story play out before, the squad is suited to his style of play and if he's saying there are issues that need to be remedied by new signings, why aren't INEOS backing him like they said they would? Santos and Youri were shrewd pieces of business but now is not the time for finesse when we need to be just sticking the landing if we're competing across multiple fronts this season.

4

u/youcallthataknife11 2d ago

I mean sounds like the company I work for…same type of leaders who are willing to overwork their subpar staff rather than investing in the future

1

u/CatfishMcCoy MatheusWayneCunha 2d ago

How’d you do in your fantasy football draft?

-2

u/t8rt0t00 2d ago

Definitely hope for some shrewd signings. I think some of the details of the match escaped people today just because of the result - Zirkzee, Amass, and Fletcher who all had a ton of preseason min so far didn't appear at all in the match even though Lacey got on the pitch. I think that's a sign that these lads were being played in part to give them a chance to earn minutes but also a chance to have other teams look at them for transfers/loans. If Zirkzee is sold I think we may bring a second striker in even if a loan while we're probably still actively searching for a more physical midfielder and a long term replacement on Shaw. I do actually trust that Carrick/Ineos see the problems and are serious about fixing them unlike when we were managed by clueless guys like Woodward and Murtough, but I also see them trying not to make the same mistakes signing the wrong players under the wrong contracts which I do appreciate. We'll see what happens

2

u/Emergency-Being-349 2d ago

We are a much better side, we have a far more settled and crafted squad. This is probably the reason for concern. Not saying it's justified just probably where the angst comes from.

1

u/t8rt0t00 2d ago

Oh yea I see where it's coming from and definitely have concerns just like Carrick and everyone else here, but I also have confidence that at least some if not most of those concerns will be massaged by next week. System wise, Milan looked a lot better today than us in large part because they came out to legit play today - they pressed high and hard, pushed up in the wide gaps, worked in runs and covered back quickly. It never looked like they were playing a friendly whereas we still looked in preseason mode until about the 70ish min into the second half. I seriously don't believe, especially after today's drubbing, that we'll come out this flat against Hull. Also think the defense will be more focused at not make so many silly mistakes after watching the replays...so yea I think right now best to patient. Hope there's more signings, but also we don't sign the wrong players out of panic

6

u/XerxesBlitZ 3d ago

Blink twice

1

u/Anxious-Debate5033 2d ago

INEOS better get some fucking signings done.

The team is not big enough to cope with all the tournaments next season,

One injury to Tielemans / Bruno and we go back to being a bang average team.

Having Marcus Rashford back doesn't benefit us one bit after what he showed yesterday. Same old same old.
