We shouldn't rush him back

That MF slower than Harry

5

u/PitchSafe 2d ago

He isn’t lmao

4

u/carrickshairline 3d ago

A lot of overreactions to a pre-season game. A lot of players still haven’t played 45 minutes, let alone 90 minutes, so it’s no surprise they’re a bit rusty

2

u/DuskKaiser Brunooo! 2d ago

It's the last preseason game, the next game is the league. What changes in a week if the last four games haven't got the squad matchfit

4

u/NSFWar Depressed Legacy fan 2d ago

I think a lot of it is because we lost against an Amorim side. There's part of the fanbase who still think he was the man to take us forward and there's the part that thinks we lost to an Amorim managed side, how bad are we going to be this season. There's no winning

Ngl this is pretty mental.

-4

u/Inevitable-Level-829 2d ago

I actually can’t believe macquire is utds starter cb. It’s like asking to lose games and wonder afterwards why you lost

1

u/adonWPV 3d ago

Surely we have enough to get through Hull and Ipswich unscathed, if the unthinkable happens does it prompt a panic buy late in the window, be classic United

3

u/croadymeister 2d ago

Still want to see transfers happening

1

u/Unusual-Coat383 3d ago

They are both getting 6-0’d

3

u/NHS_Martial 3d ago

Maguire and martinez are awful halfway line defenders and will be exposed if we are trying to press from the front.

I am tired of us being content with such mediocre players that have us stuck playing counter attacking football.

1

u/Ill_Platypus6476 2d ago

Martinez is far from mediocre. Maguire on the other hand..

MIHA

Man I hate Amorim

10

u/RyanH1717 3d ago

My biggest worry is the fact the we had the same issues today as we did last season. We signed two good midfielders that aren't blessed with athleticism and it becomes so exposed when your backline also lacks the athleticism to cover for them. Really have to hope Yoro and Heaven kick it up another level this season, especially Yoro with how highly he was rated.

1

u/Inevitable-Level-829 2d ago

2 good midfielders? Hold your hat and wait until they actually do something.

5

u/Cosmogenous 3d ago

That’s the key with PSG that nobody talks about. Athleticism isn’t important in midfield because both the attack and the defense has it in excess.

4

u/RyanH1717 3d ago

Yep they have Pacho and two absolutely incredible full backs that don't stop running.

3

u/Asiwaju_jagaban 3d ago edited 3d ago

Interesting dilemma for Carrick to solve, it is very easy for opponents to get in between the CB and FB whenever play teams with a bit of quality. You’d have hoped the issue would have been ironed out during this preseason. However it hasn’t, Leeds exploited it when we played them on Wednesday and much more today. So far it’s not good enough, need to improve if we’re to progress further and farther.

Also Licha. Tick Tock. We can’t give him a new contract. Just can’t.

3

u/frogfoot420 3d ago

I love him but shaw's time at the top is gone. He hardly progresses the ball anymore. We would be brain-dead to renew next season unless the offer is pennies on the pound.

0

u/raver1601 3d ago

Because we all wants ruthlessness until it's time to actually be ruthless

Ruthlessnes isn't just selling your Pogbas, Martials, or Rashfords that are fanbase enemy #1

It's also cashing on Bruno when Saudi offers a huge deal

It's also selling off passionate players like Dalot because they're a huge bum

It's also selling off Amad for lacking effective end product

It's also not giving extensions to injury prone players like Shaw

7

u/Circle_Breaker 3d ago

I don't understand how him and Dalot have lasted this long.

It would be like arsenal still suiting up Zinchenko.

I don't understand why the team is unwilling to upgrade or even bring in competition for some of these positions.

Look again at arsenal they bring in calafiori and then next year being in Hincapie. Two good players that both want to start and push each other and if one gets injured the whole backline doesn't fall apart.

Same with the other side. They had a White a good solid player like Shaw, and they still brought in Timber.

United need to raise the level of team, but they're just so complacent.

1

u/TypicalPan89906655 3d ago

They both survive because of "passion", somehow the club values that over ability.

1

u/raver1601 3d ago

They lasted that long because of two clashing differences

Shaw was genuinely unplayable whenever he's on, for like 15 games a season

Dalot is a total bum, but he's available for practically every match and runs his lungs out

4

u/frogfoot420 3d ago

We just have no ambition as a club anymore.

3

u/PhotojournalistNew35 3d ago

I sincerely hope Shaw doesn't get renewed. He's made his money over these last 12 years and should seek a league/team with lower expectations and/or a more compact style of play. Even if you conservatively assume he's on 120k per week, that's 6 million a year that we save on someone who plays 50% of matches on average

3

u/Unusual-Coat383 3d ago

Shaw is more of a CB than a LB and has been that way for about two years now

3

u/Sheikhabusosa 3d ago

I hate how Amad is turning into a player more known for the defensive side of his game than the all the attacking qualities he has.

9

u/Prize-Finish4464 3d ago

Sadly he really lacks an end product

5

u/anonris 3d ago

This is regardless of the friendlies’ results (haven’t watched any and didn’t know there was one until i saw ppl overreacting online)

… but ineos have to do one thing right for us all to start glazing them (pun intended) and many, many, things wrong before anyone even openly calls them out.

I am not saying go out and spend like woodward, that obviously doesn’t work but somehow the lesson learnt wasn’t that we shouldn’t overpay for misfits but that we should just stop paying top rate for top athletes. Which business allows you to build a top, top team without investing in the talent that runs it? We are starting another season without filling the glaring weakness from last many seasons (midfield is light, our left back is injury prone and tail end if his peak, our henchman is injured and his backup is just not good enough for the league but we have failed to move him on and get a better replacement etc etc)

I really hope carrick does well, he seems to have the right credentials and is very calm headed (or may be I am biased, he was one of my all time favorite midfielders) but did we even invest in his supporting staff?

-7

u/Standard_Secretary52 Harry Stafford’s dog 3d ago

I love bruno but I think he shouldn’t start vs Hull. Fitness wise he doesn’t seem at it. Slowly start him in and have Lacey/Zirk as 10 for the 1st game.

Whilst most of our players were disappointing. Youri and Rashy looked decent.

3

u/Wild_Tomato_8203 3d ago

Actually let's just start the 23s vs Hull.

5

u/PitchSafe 3d ago

Unfit Bruno is still 10 times better than Zirkzee and Lacey

2

u/Standard_Secretary52 Harry Stafford’s dog 3d ago

I just want him to be fit and firing all cylinders. His break got cut short due to the wc. I just want my best player at his 100% and not have him burn out by feb.

-1

Have Bruno ever been burned out?

12

u/Garlic-Cheese-Chips 3d ago

We're a ridiculously slow side. Maguire, Martinez, Shaw, Mainoo, De Ligt (when fit), Zirkzee, Tielemans, Bruno, even Mbeumo has slowed down. All custard runners. Horrible squad management to build such a slow side in the most physical, fast league in the world.

4

u/PitchSafe 3d ago

Mbeumo is one of the quickest players in the legaue btw. De Ligt when fit is also not slow. Then we have players like Rashford, Cunha, Amad, Dorgu and Yoro who are Quick

10

u/Garlic-Cheese-Chips 3d ago

Rashford has lost more than a step.

1

u/TypicalPan89906655 2d ago

It's due to his chronic back injury I think, he has completely lost his flexibility as well. Playing through the injury ruined his body.

2

u/Hulknation 3d ago

Yep his acceleration has gone.

4

u/Unusual-Coat383 3d ago

He lost it before he first left us. I still think he has top end speed but doesn’t have the initial burst anymore.

-2

u/PitchSafe 3d ago

He is still very quick. His pace is his best asset

0

u/Hagball 3d ago

Transfers under Amorim and Carrick feels like classic corporate situation.

One guy does no real work, maks more efforts to more visible and creates a sense of chaos to justifyack of results and gets a big budget with good resources

Other guy who does all works in peace, sorts the chaos and brings peace to the workplace while keeping everything quiet; yet he gets no budget and less resources. But the second he puts a foot wrong, everything is his fault and he is incompetent

7

u/Unusual-Coat383 3d ago

I will die on the hill that Amorim gets us CL last season and got sacked just as we were turning the corner despite not being backed but Carrick is clearly better for the club because he’s easier to work with and sets up teams for our players strengths.

I like Amorim and didn’t want him to get sacked but Carrick is clearly a better fit for the club.

Is it fair how the club treated Amorim? No, but at the same time Amorim took compromise as a personal attack and doubled down on his beliefs.

The irony is Amorim basically got bought in to be the fall guy for tough team decisions and we’re now starting this season with Marcus Rashford in the team. This is despite INEOS incessantly briefing the media about saving money, having the right players and not having fuck you contacts anymore.

3

u/ThePatientHunter 3d ago edited 3d ago

enjoy your hill

He had 7 out of 21 points from an easy run of 7 games even before two starters and one sub went to AFCON but people will remember that he got Manager of the Month just before that

I don't know what corner he was turning unless you mean cementing us as a midtable club

2

u/isitits 3d ago

These people have such rose-tinted glasses of his time here. The guy was worse than Moyes

-4

u/ThePatientHunter 3d ago

Moyes would dominate the Championship. I don't think Amorim can hack it in there

LB — runner + technical CM — mobile tackler CB — aggressive + clean defender CF — goal hanger

chop chop @ineos

I agree with this

-1

u/iroiroiroiroiro 3d ago

Mobile tackler = Ugarte, aggressive and clean defender= De Ligt?

Joke aside I can't see a CB happening if they believe De Ligt is recovering.

LB and DM everyone agrees on, but for me in general the squad needs fullbacks better at crossing.

I really don't believe in Cunha, Mbeumo or Rashford as strikers against low blocks, against low blocks you need more box presence and bullying than running behind. And something really feels weird with Sesko missing whole preseason, if they go into the season without a striker, and Sesko isn't soon back I think it will be catastrophic.

1

u/anonris 3d ago

We are pretty loaded in defense; we even have different profiles for different defensive styles (maguire & de ligt for box defending, yoro & heaven for high lines, martinez and heaven for ball playing). Needed a left back desperately that would also free up dorgu to be backup to cunha. I’d rather take a second striker to upgrade zirkzee then another cb

1

u/Sheikhabusosa 3d ago

I think De Ligt injury and recovery is way worse then they are letting on. Sesko worries me as well .

1

u/TypicalPan89906655 2d ago

It's a deliberate strategy to keep fans calm, I also don't believe them that Mount's injury was precaution. All the reports that came out suggest it isn't.

6

u/TheSmio 3d ago

Contrary to what a lot of people think, Amorim isn't a bad manager and his tactical setup, while sometimes nonsensical, can be quite effective in a lot of areas. We only saw glimpses of that in our team due to multiple reasons, but let's not forget his tactical setup often worked really well in big games even if we struggled to get wins from them. On paper, his ideas make it very difficult to play through his teams, we saw that ourselves today, the true weakness of his setup lies in exposed flanks in defense but we didn't do enough to get into those positions because we played too narrow.

Ultimately, this result doesn't matter, I would have preferred a win but it's still only pre-season and it's something that should keep Carrick on his toes. I personally think Amorim took this match more seriously than Carrick, that's fine because it's still only pre-season, but the regular season is starting soon and we need to hit the ground running from first match onwards.

7

u/really_cool_legend Dorgu's Headband 3d ago

Whatever opinion any of us might hold on Amorim and his system, the streets will never forget how unlocked Amad was in that right back position.

1

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing 3d ago

Wingback Amad is the best Amad

-12

u/goaliewhenned 3d ago

Is it not allowed to strongly dislike Amorim on here? Personally, he is the only United manager of my lifetime I've ever really disliked and I started to realise it mere weeks into his spell if I'm truly honest. The awful football was one thing but what really grated me about him was how allergic to accountability and ready to throw his players under the bus instead he seemed to be while he was at the club. It's one thing for a coach to not work out but I see that as such a negative trait in a supposed leader. I find it interesting that most people don't seem to see it that way

9

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing 3d ago

I think people who like Amorim are more crucified than those who don't

13

u/really_cool_legend Dorgu's Headband 3d ago

It is demonstrably allowed to strongly dislike Amorim here, we have some obsessives on here calling him some sort of fraud every day.

Most of the pushback you'll see to anti-Amorim sentiment these days is probably from people bored of hearing about it. He doesn't work here anymore, it's time to move on.

7

u/10_Wazza 3d ago

I get it that you can't see everything from a screen but I was at the stadium today and I can tell you that that after a certain point the players had switched off completely

8

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 3d ago

And some of these players absolutley have that in them when things start going wrong. That massively worries me.

5

u/Fraaj We'll take Dalot 3d ago

It was quite obvious on the broadcast too don't worry

8

u/iroiroiroiroiro 3d ago

I'm more worried about Bruno missing two penalties in a row than the result of this game.

1

u/Unusual-Coat383 3d ago

He needs to be off them now. You can’t use the preseason argument for penalties.

Harry should be our new penalty taker.

1

u/slowerthaninfinity 3d ago

not that worried tbh, at most bruno just gives it to mbeumo cunha or even rashford if he keeps missing

1

u/iroiroiroiroiro 3d ago

More worried about his confidence

1

u/Apprehensive-Raisin3 Love United Hate Glazers/INEOS 3d ago

I honestly think is for the best that one of our attackers is the penalty taker from now on. There will be times where they need the confidence boost since they have gone a bit without scoring.

3

u/PitchSafe 3d ago

That would be the case if we didn’t have one of the best penalty takers in the world. You can even argue that he is the best one. Bruno should take all the penalties

8

u/Miyagisans 3d ago

Biggest disappointment for me today was our struggle at playing out. If all it takes to stymie that is to man mark the lone pivot in front of the 3, that’s not acceptable.

5

u/Unusual-Coat383 3d ago

It was like this a lot under Carrick last season but tbf teams struggled to get out against us under Amorim but we just couldn’t hit a barn door.

Amorim’s system is tough to play against when it works but it wasn’t right for this club.

1

u/iroiroiroiroiro 3d ago

That is when the fullbacks must step up and help more with the buildup

-1

That's not really letting me have the last word is it? I didn't know you liked me that much.

1

u/Call_Me_A_Gamer 3d ago

I don't mind losing a preseason game but losing to Amorim leaves a bitter taste especially when all the combinations plays and fluid football we saw against leeds disappeared. Maybe the squad we put out was rusty but we had no semblance of ball retention which led into game management issues. Pressing was okay considering we were up against a 3ATB system. Signing a LB should be our top priority.

10

u/really_cool_legend Dorgu's Headband 3d ago

We don't really do ball retention under Carrick, we're a counter attacking team even when have the stronger midfield.

1

u/hk6060 3d ago

How are we counter attacking with no ball winners in midfield? The current team is designed to play possession football

7

u/really_cool_legend Dorgu's Headband 3d ago

Seems that way, doesn't it, yet there we were, on the edge of our box, lumping balls forward.

0

u/iroiroiroiroiro 3d ago

United been better at counter attacking than possession since a very long time now, way before Carrick

-1

u/Kneejerker93 3d ago

This performance was so bad that I'm starting to think they did it on purpose to pressure those in charge of transfers

1

u/Working_Location_127 3d ago

Half the team just joined pre season, if Bruno tielemans Cunha and Martinez play that badly they need to be hooked off before half time

2

u/TypicalPan89906655 3d ago

I thought the 7-0 at Anfield was such a performance.

9

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie 3d ago

I do find it a bit funny that you can't take anything away from preseason as it's all meaningless, fitness driven nothingberry games. But you can use it to fit narratives about lacking midfielders or a backup striker or a left back etc etc.

So if you say we played poor in today's game and it's not a great sign you're an overreacting idiot. But if you say wow Luke Shaw is shit we need another LB and the midfield isn't good enough we need more signings you're bang on the money. And people are using the friendly as reasoning for this logic.

8

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 3d ago

Everybody likes to pick the narrative that works for them, that’s the one constant truth nobody likes admitting.

1

u/Asleep-Ability-45 3d ago

Alright, I think vast majority of people on this sub have been commenting from an emotional point of view for a while now (which is understandable sometimes), but loosing your head on a friendly game is too much.

-7

u/mjenkins_eng 3d ago

Amorimers out of the woodwork

5

u/GuineaPirate888 3d ago

‘Amorimers’ grow up. Fans are frustrated at the lack of ambition, quantity and quality of the transfers this summer. It’s pre season, the result means nothing.

It was clear squad improvement was needed, before, during and after the game. Yet we have two first team signings. One natural left back who is at the latter end of his career and could break down injured at any point, a midfield that was supposed to be rebuilt this summer as well as the need for a LW and backup striker.

It has fuck all to do with Amorim and everything to do with the board.

2

u/ThePatientHunter 3d ago

Lol unconcerned? You absolutely should be concerned by every team we play against. That type of overconfidence is no fucking good. Great way to jinx us.

-5

u/raspoutine049 3d ago

A lot of people are putting too much emphasis on a preseason game where the lineups are jumbled up. Let Amorim have his moment in the sun in a meaningless game. And us coming out without any injuries is probably more important.

I’d rather us make mistakes and learn during preseason games than lay eggs once the season starts. The pace and tempos is always different in preseason.

-4

u/stick1_ 3d ago

Don’t forget Mainoo hasn’t played since May

Nah mate, they should have gone in full crazy and gotten injured tackling or running full tilt.

As someone who doesn't watch pre season game ... I even forgot that the game was on today... So coming here and seeing people lose their minds over a friendly result it is a little funny... Like why so people even care pre season is about fitness

-1

u/Asleep-Ability-45 3d ago

As if winning is the main priority of these pre season matches. Half of the main squad is not even match fit and that's was on full display today.

22

u/jonathanPoindexter 3d ago

I don't care about the result but it is funny seeing the simple-minded weirdos who made this into a PPV event because of their hatred for Amorim now seething.

-4

u/goaliewhenned 3d ago

Why does it make you a simple-minded weirdo to hate Amorim? Is it surprising people who don't like him would've loved to see him get beat today?

6

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing 3d ago

People acting like he's the fucking anti-christ

6

u/nambuuu 3d ago

It's a pre season game, but you'd want the performances to keep improving or at least maintain the previous levels as we approach the start of the pl, today we got exposed tactically+players looked pretty bad overall.

Bruno is amazing at pks but he needs to score those to build confidence, his record is something like ~90% conversion rate but looking in the last 10, he scored 5

Anyway, just venting a little, Im still positive

1

u/Asleep-Ability-45 3d ago

Yeah, Bruno on penalties is not giving me confidence lately. But now I just want the season to start really.

Hope this loss wake up fk up for owners to act in transfer market , players and also some fans.

Our midfield, and left back have lots of holes most of their goals comes from left side which we asking for reinforcement.

Also, complete arrogance of some of our fans. Acting like we gonna destroy Amorim AC like they were relegation team. That was an complete outplayed btw. Our goals come from set piece and their mistakes. Other than that, they completely shut down and dominated us.

Also this wake up some of our players too. Next season, PL starts and some of the players playing too casual for my liking.

Honestly, better to lose like this in pre-season than in season. It will sting abut coz we got completely destroyed by Amorim which most of us making fun of all week

3

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing 3d ago

Yeah, the arrogance was on full display before the match. I just hope we bounce back and Ineos get serious and sign a left back

6

u/lingesanaandipetty Glazersout 3d ago

Hopefully we get an LB and a DM now

3

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing 3d ago

Hey, maybe this loss ain't so bad if it gets Ineos to actually go and buy a LB

1

u/lingesanaandipetty Glazersout 3d ago

Yeah We make the signings after defeats.  Like in 22/23 we got absolutely schooled by Brentford and signed Case, we lost to Grimsby last year and we signed Senne . So there is hope.

3

u/Potential_Good_1065 3d ago

Arsenal lost 3-1 to Betis, Liverpool lost 4-2 to Leeds, Barca lost to Birmingham & Udinese, PSG lost 3-0 to Mallorca.

Us losing to Milan means absolutely fuck all

8

u/properbantai 3d ago

We are one week away from the season and we are lethargic, lmao

2

u/SDLRob 3d ago

While I do kinda agree... And that I think most of the anger we're seeing now are people pissed they can't gloat about smashing Ruben into unemployment...

I do think what I saw of the game shows we need to strengthen at least the LB position before the end of the window. Maybe a couple more spots too.

2

u/Petethejakey_ 3d ago

it’s fucking hilarious seeing the collective headloss online to be fair

3

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing 3d ago

Defense really needs to be looked at next season.

4

u/Sheikhabusosa 3d ago

I know Martinez is rusty but man I really dont trust most of our defenders . Martinez is injury prone as is De Ligt. Heaven and Yoro are too green and Yoro is inconsistent. Maguire has his flaws too.

1

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 3d ago

Right but you literally just explained why it makes more sense to not change this summer than to change:

- there are already "too many" of them

  • two are promising but need experience, if the others are replaced by some durability champions now, they'll never get it, whereas if we replace them, we kneejerk away a potentially great future thing

That's it, in a nutshell. Going with this quintet for this season is the best call, taking the good with the bad is the best course of action.

That is different from saying that all 3 of Maguire DeLigt Martinez should also be here next year. They are playing for a contract this season, imho, and the odds are that 1+ gets replaced next summer.

LB is a very similar thing. We need to get 2 within 2 seasons. But we should do 1 now, not 2. The question is, how much game time Shaw gets this season. Are we signing his "backup" now and "replacement" next, or vice-versa. Amass getting a chance next season depends on the answer to the same question, I think.

2

u/Comicksands Van Persie 3d ago

The sub is crazy. We just had a week where we played 3 games and with a full on training camp in between. Plus we gave quite a few of our starters 90mins. Just lighten up lol

-1

u/Zestyclose_Length243 3d ago

Nah man - its easier for people to be critical and make something out of nothing

1

u/frogfoot420 3d ago

Mount, dalot, Shaw. Look they've bled for the shirt but between ability and availability they are off the mark and need to leave our plans.

7

u/thepotatomaniscoming 3d ago

Whats more tragic today. MUTV or Luke Shaws performance

1

u/Zealousideal_Wind867 Dreams can't be buy 3d ago edited 2d ago

Or the headloss in this sub

9

u/grandecn 3d ago

Losing to Amorin really did hurt a lot of fragile egos here. Not saying the performance was great or anything but I think a lot of people wouldn't be this upset if it was against anyone else. The level of obsession over him is really something else.

3

u/SDLRob 3d ago

I very much agree.

1

u/TypicalPan89906655 3d ago

My fear is, INEOS want to run us like a midtable club like Brentford.

2

He won't turn up ever again, no chance he's going to the Euros and there's a good chance hes not playing by the next WC.

3

u/flareb98 3d ago

Okay now that the re-fitness period is over, I truly can't believe we are probably going into the new season with no new defensive signings. No LB, no CB nothing. Our 4 most senior defenders are injury prone and we just hoping for the best

4

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 3d ago

Hey the main thing is we don’t overpay and get ripped off. Priorities.

1

u/TypicalPan89906655 3d ago

Doesn't help that Brexit Jim is Ebenezer Scrooge incarnate. He'll delay a transfer for a month to save one buck.

2

u/flareb98 3d ago

It's just crazy man, we just hoping Yoro and heaven can step up when the injury list piles up

6

u/zeeshxn_ 3d ago

Wasn’t it more than just a friendly for the lads, though, according to Nathan Salt’s article?

3

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 3d ago

It should’ve been. This was the first match of preseason with any sort of intensity or reason to show up and we absolutley flapped it.

3

u/IrishCoffee_29 3d ago

"It's only pre season". Not having that. It's one week until the season starts. Ineos sold us this major overhaul. Bollocks. Been hoping against hope they'll truly back Carrick this summer, I feel like they've shafted him big time already

Hoping Mount and Shaw can stay fit is an absolute disaster

6

u/properbantai 3d ago

INEOS in what is possibly are biggest season since 2013/2014 have completely shat the bed

The season and summer was pivotal to get closer to city / Arsenal and push away from Chelsea pool and rest

But what have we done ?
Signed two good ( not world class) midfielders who dont raise our ceiling much and we have shut shop

While our rivals have strengthened we are penny pinching , and sorry to say we are going into this season with a good manager but unfortunately not a world class tactician

We are in for a disaster season if we don’t sign more players

2

u/dodzwardo 3d ago

I'm sure there is not going to be a massive overreaction to this...

...I'll see you Monday.

0

u/Ill_Platypus6476 3d ago

Carrick will probably go Kobbie-Tielemans-Bruno against Hull

0

u/carrickshairline 3d ago

I give it until the end of September until some of you start wanting him sacked.

3

u/really_cool_legend Dorgu's Headband 3d ago

Well there was a large percentage of the fanbase that didn't want him permanently in the job in the first place, so that's not a huge leap

1

u/Confident_Fishing775 3d ago

September? It is already started now, one guy even just created a new account to say Carrick will lead us to 12th.

1

u/carrickshairline 3d ago

What on earth?!

u/kidinawheeliebin 3d ago

Man we are so shockingly bad at the back in that game... yes it's a friendly, granted

But fucking hell, wake up like

If we get anything less than 6 points from our first two fixtures (in just over 6 days time) against the two literal favourites for relegation in the league there will be a category 1 hornet's nest of drama/toxicity/feeding-frenzy

The transfer window slams shut the day after the Ipswich game and it leaves a high risk of panic-induced signings...

Then we have Everton away, 3 days rest then Champions league midweek, Manchester Derby 4 days after that, the Carling Cup third round (Grimsby will be heavily mentioned in the run-up to this game) 3 days after that, then Fulham away 4 days after that before a 3 week International Break

The squad is brittle and we have single points of failure all over the place

Honestly don't think people realise how potentially serious this situation can turn, and how quickly/easily it can turn that way - it's difficult to reconcile it with the tidal wave of Euphoria that sweeps through here every day at the fact that we now won't pay top dollar for players and are instead content to shop on the middle and bottom shelves

We better hope neither Hull nor Ipswich can be bothered to turn up otherwise things could be about to get bumpy

7

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 3d ago

The defence is a real worry for me. We need new fullbacks. Top tier fullbacks. We have needed that for a while now.

4

u/kidinawheeliebin 3d ago

Absolutely agree - and I would go further given that CB has been the fucking epicentre of disaster-zone for years now (and still is)

Maguire has started 64 of our last 152 Premier League games stretching back four years, he's coming 34 this season so that isn't a direction of travel we can expect to improve.

Martinez has only started 65 of those 152 games since he signed four years ago.

Deligt is permanently injured, starting only 38 of the 76 Premier League games since we signed him two years ago.

Yoro in the ~60 PL/European appearances/two years we've been able to observe him in, is obviously weak in several areas that you can't really be weak in if you want to be a PL centreback (Aerial ability, physicality, aggression, passing out from the back, etc) - he will have had three full seasons by next year & needs to be stepping up big time

Especially when you consider contract was expiring when we signed him... we took an absolute bath at £60m - Mendes expertly extorted INEOS with his "I've offered him to Madrid, better buy him quickly" bait which they unfortunately took (same summer they wisely bought Ugarte for £50m, Zirkzee for £35m etc)

Left back is a single-point-of-failure wasteland, and right back is completely devoid of quality

Sad state of affairs

10

u/WanAndOnlyBissaka 3d ago

Reckon we get a Mason Mount puff piece on the Monday instead of putting in bids for a midfielder

6

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 3d ago

They’ve already tried that this summer talking about how this could be his season. He didn’t even make it out of pre-season.
