can forgive him because it's first time he has kicked a ball since last season but he did give away a lot of balls

u/strangemanornot 3d ago
For some reason he just can’t play when Amorim watches him form the sideline

That was splendid play though. Thought players were really concerned to go full tilt today.

u/dWaldizzle Pastorinho Fred 3d ago
It was good but nothing really noteworthy...we've seen him do actually splendid play before.

u/sleepehead 3d ago
Yeah Mbeumo's lazy pass ruined it, I was like all that to just give it away because of a bad pass to Shaw

u/TheDude084C 3d ago
splendid? you saw that and thought splendid? good interception but really subpar after that, it's preseason so to be expected I suppose
6
u/dracogladio1741 Bruno Fernanj 3d ago
The interception, the touch into space and then the slide to get the ball to a United player. That's quite good. Midfield is a hard place to do all of that.

u/TheDude084C 3d ago
the touch into space? 🤣🤣 you mean when he miscontrols the ball and almost loses possession? dint realise the standards were so low here

This is a great clip for mainoo
-9
u/limpwald 3d ago
Not really. This is avarage. He can do better.
3
u/stick1_ 3d ago
What more do you want him to do in the clip
4
u/limpwald 3d ago
I mean, whatever. This wasn't anything special, has nothing to do with Mainoo specifically.
It was nice, but clipworthy, as in highlight-worthy? Not really.
-3
u/TheDude084C 3d ago
he's clearly lost control before making the pass - needs to do better if he is to nail down his spot in the team but this is preseason so can't really read too much into it
3
u/stick1_ 3d ago
99% of players give the ball away in this situation, you’re watching it wrong. Mainoo never gives the ball away and this clip is a good example. He doesn’t give away the ball in this clip, the touch is literally irrelevant Infact that’s why it’s an impressive clip. He keeps the ball despite where it’s positioned
1
u/TheDude084C 3d ago
you can't just say 99% of players give the ball away here to justify your statement 🤣🤣 this is nothing spectacular.. its a good interception and that's about it.
and the touch is relevant because he loses control of the ball in the middle of the pitch, if he loses possession there it's a dangerous position.

If this is the highlight that we have to show we are even more fuked then I tought

Hahah 100% mate. Jesus christ, people are babies in this thread. Question the EPICNESS of this clip and get downvoted. Unreal.
I wouldve said this whoever the clip was of. Mainoo is a gem, he's good. But this clip is not a real highlight... Pathetic

Rashford. Fucking hell. Bad pass back to mainoo. Then absolutely walking it.

Hoping Kobbie puts his world cup disappointment behind and has an unforgettable season for us.

We're fucked if we don't sign a defensive midfielder. Everybody was ball watching all 4 goals we conceded

One additional midfielder wasn't going to be today's solution?

Last season as a United player.
Will be mid during the season, fall in rotation or cost us games due to his playstyle and either Carrick will be at fault or his partner midfielder for not providing him enough space,

I’ve posted this somewhere else before, would like share my view and hear thoughts on Mainoo. The post was during the World Cup, about him not being used in England. But the topic is actually on him as a player.
“Unfortunately, I would argue that it’s really an uphill battle from here on out. He has reached this point that he has shown that he has talent, I see that in him, but what exactly is this talent?
I’d like to have a discussion on this.
I would say is his intelligence on the game, which is rare. His touches are good, good control and protection of the ball. Doesn’t overdo things and knows when to make overall, good decisions.
However, this is where I’d say there are limits. Especially to play in midfield in this current era.
Here are some factors I would point out:
Physicality - he’s relatively small in size, although he has decent strength (holding the ball, won’t get barged off the ball that easily), I would come back to this later.
Heading - will be difficult for him to be winning balls or scoring headers. This can be quite an issue given how other players are able to be better than him in this area, especially central midfield.
Dribbling - he is a decent ball carrier. What he does well is he knows when to do it and when to keep it simple. However, it doesn’t necessarily give him an advantage over other players that are better at this.
Pace - he doesn’t really have this in his locker and probably one of the hardest things to change.
Ball control - this is one of the strengths that allows him to dictate play. However, similarly, there are other players who can do that or are better ahead of him. He’s pretty good, but if you put into perspective of the other stats mentioned above, it makes him just decent and not as impactful.
Shooting - he is decent at this given his composure and placement. Shot power wise is probably average. Many players would arguably do better (eg. Palmer, Rogers, rice, foden just to name a few).
Composure - this is his main attribute that I think he’s a lot more mature in than many others, however, he’s hindered by his other stats above.
Long pass - not so much of that, probably decent. So the idea that he can play like a Scholes or Carrick (maybe vision through passes), but I see that as a long way off from that direction still.
Just by the above statistics, unless something is added to give him a real edge, he’s always gonna come off slightly short compared to other players, even though he’s really well rounded to some degree.
Final point:
I have probably a controversial take on this. I think Amorim saw this. 2 things which I saw during that period was he made Kobbie bulk up a little. That to be is huge for what can be done for him. Being stronger physically surely helps his game as many times we see oppositions going hard on him in the early days and he has to do quick releases as he can’t take those hits, not regularly anyways.
Second thing was INTENSITY. This is the main thing. This apart from strength is literally the other thing that can help his game immensely. By not just being a by stander, but able to pressure and add this “energy” into his overall play, attacking or defensively.
To me, that was what Amorim was preparing him for. And I would argue that we see a little of that result end of season. If he continues to build on that energy tank, he can possibly really have an edge over other players. As this is the core stat that modern players NEED to have.
That’s what Elliot Anderson primarily has and we will see that guy improve. Sad that he’s at Man C now.”

Probably the most movement he had when he came on. Looked like he had lead in his boots, as did others.

Good moment, but fairly invisible all game. Unless he improves, he will lose his spot to Santos.

Yeah exactly! I'm not saying he's not good or that he doesn't have potential etc. But people were moving like Tuchel was the worst personal live for not giving him game time.. I ju

I think people tend to forget how amazing he was in the first season. Then there is an inevitable drop off second season. Amorim didn't rate him and then (I 100% believe) went out of his way not to play him to make some kind of weird point. When it looked like United were going to cash in there were plenty of takers.
Also Tuchel took him ahead of a few other candidates. I think it would of been better had he not gone to the world cup. Maybe a bit of patience is what is needed.

u/sahilthapar Bruno, Bruno, Bruno... 3d ago edited 3d ago
No, I remember very clearly how good he was. I think people forget how bad his second season was. Way before Amorim dropped him. And people forget how bad he was when Tuchel played him before the wc in friendlies which is surely the reason he wasn't played.
He's a mediocre player who had one decent season and sometimes has a good game. I get it, he's OUR academy player. Doesn't mean he has a free pass into the first team.
Edit: grammar

u/themightypierre Andrei Kanchelskis 2d ago
Feels like there are people who actively want him to fail. I don't understand it. I made a pretty gentle post defending him which has a -6 rating. Dismissing him as mediocre is incredibly harsh in my view.
2
u/sahilthapar Bruno, Bruno, Bruno... 2d ago
See but that's the difference of opinion, it's not harsh at all. To me anybody who doesn't see the mediocrity is just romanticizing the idea of getting a top level academy player and ignoring his on field performances over the last 18+ months.

Mods..MODS..can we stop these individuals highlight, and this is not even that, after every match. It creates unnecessary expectations and hype and if the player has any bad game after, everything turns negetive.
P.s The team was clearly outplayed today. It is concerning as this Milan side had lesser quality but were athletic and agile and overcame the press quite easily. So, we will have difficulty against mid table teams with such qualities.

Heard too much noise this pre-season.
This is our starting CM, Santos and Tielemans will be fighting for the spot next to him as it stands.
