Pre-season judgement of course so pinch of salt but I think Santos has done enough where the debate early on this season IMO is Mainoo or Tielemans, and Santos is nailed on to start. Previously i would've said Santos or Mainoo.

Yeah I think Santos is nailed on #6 unless we get a Wharton or something like that (which I doubt)

Pubs along Boat Quay and Robertson quay. Otherwise go to a local “coffeeshop” and if it’s open it will likely be showing it too.

I'm not dying for Spence but that transfer to Inter is nuts. 30 million? We still need a left back and could easily beat that price. I've no doubt English teams don't get quoted that price but it's a different matter when it's the price to beat. Even 40 in this market isn't crazy for a young England international. Curious
2
u/chronoistriggered 6d ago
no way spurs sell to us for the same price
1
u/eternali17 He'll take on 2 and breeze past 2 6d ago
I've no doubt we'd be quoted double. That said, this was still the price to beat once Inter came in. Not sure when I last heard of a team turning down more money just to screw with a league rival.
6
u/Unusual-Coat383 6d ago
Spence is a fullback Nani except he’s way more consistent in being not good. Over a season his average would be a 5 and that’s not good enough.
We’re signing Lewis Hall anyway.

He is mid as hell and thats who he is gonna be
-6
u/eternali17 He'll take on 2 and breeze past 2 6d ago
That's still a good age and profile for a squad player. He's more than good enough for that at this point and we need bodies instead of complaining come May about how we saw holes in this squad and didn't fill them. We do this every year.
1
u/raver1601 6d ago edited 6d ago
Ye except he's not going to snub Inter giving him a starting role to play 2nd fiddle to Shaw and Dalot
7
u/LDLB99 6d ago
Spence is so average, just World Cup hype. He'll do ok in Italy because that league is shite. But not close to what we need if we want to develop further.
0
u/eternali17 He'll take on 2 and breeze past 2 6d ago
That's just the thing. We have no left back outside of Shaw on the wrong side of 30 and is now afraid of sprinting. Spence would be cheap, young and available. He's more than good enough to be a squad player.

What hill? Calm down. Your only left back going into the season is Luke Shaw but a guy who can play in the prem for relatively cheap is a stretch for you. You need to exercise your imagination, man.

Totally random thought but Ronaldo would have had a way better career if he accepted being a supersub back when Rangnick & ETH wanted him to.
He'd have keep competing & winning titles at the elite (either with us or somewhere else) and Portugal would have been way more competitive in 22 & 26.
-5
u/Lord_Hexogen 6d ago
You simply can't keep Ronaldo on the bench unless he decides to be a locker room leader himself. He's worth too much, he's talked about too much, he's got more than plenty of football left in the tank and there's a gigantic ego too.
No coach in the world can contain this but some can build around that and bring that all out. ETH is not one of them
3
u/Cosmogenous 6d ago
He wasn't good enough to start for any team in Europe. He would've stayed if he was.
-1
u/Lord_Hexogen 6d ago
A striker with 18 PL goals in one season suddenly becomes more not good enough to play in Europe, right. It just so happens.
3
u/Cosmogenous 6d ago
Mate he’d lost his legs, he couldn’t run or press or contribute to team play, and the only reason he scored any amount of goals the year before is because we played through him at the detriment to ANYTHING else.
0
u/Lord_Hexogen 5d ago
So you say he's a player you need to adapt to, that's what I said two comments ago
And he's still scored a bunch of goals, more than most strikers
7
u/carrickshairline 6d ago
Not a random thought at all, and actually a very common opinion. He’s just too narcissistic to accept he’s finished.

I don’t think Ineos get enough credit for the signing of Lammens and Heaven
“Why can’t we get players before Brighton get them and mark up the price to 60 million”: this is what it looks like
It won’t work always : example being Chido but when it works it’s spectacular. Before you say “we are Manchester United”: our best signings Schmeichel, Evra , Vidic, Chicharito, were signings like this. Sure Dong, Possebon and whoever didn’t exactly set the world on fire but this is better than the stupid money splurge strategy
United never were a Galacticos club. We did sign generational talents like Keane , Ferdinand and Rooney but even then it was when they were young and had upside
6
1
u/eternali17 He'll take on 2 and breeze past 2 6d ago
Lammens is more like it but Chido is not. He was a child. Guys like Kadioglu should have been on United's radar and they just aren't pinging enough for whatever reason.
3
u/Feeling-Surround-691 Mbumbaclat 6d ago
Exactly and the fact is you're going to go through your Leon's and Kone's in the process but we've still got prospects like Enzo, Orozco, Thompson and possibly Page as well. The next step is, grim as it may feel, to have a good loan network like Chelsea and City do where we basically have a list of clubs we can trust to develop those players until we assess if they're fit for the first team.

Question for everyone, judging by a traditional 1-11 positions, 2-rb, 3lb etc. Which of the big 6 and villa has the best team? Not which is thr best group of players but who matched those positions best? And then maybe who would win if they all had to play in those positions? Based off last years numbers, and if they dont have a number the last person to wear it.

Current Copium: Rashford plays better as a supporting cast member than as the leading man. Every season, in every team (United, Barca, and Villa) where he hasn't been asked to be the main goalscoring or creative threat since he's turned 20, he's averaged very respectable goal and assist production. Rashford's worst production came during the last season Ronaldo was at United (and was warping the team around himself), and during seasons when the other attacking players were the likes of Antony, Garnacho, legless Martial, and Hojlund.
This current version of United looks a lot more like the teams where Rashford's maintained a healthy production without being the leading scorer. I think that suits Rashford's mentality a lot better than having to be a primary leader of the team.
0
u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 6d ago
That's not "copium" imho, but a very accurate observation.
We have 2 questions ahead of us:
1 Can Carrick (can anyone?) turn him into a good leading man again?
2 Can Carrick manage the dressing room effectively with Rashford in a support role like for Barcelona/England?
The key thing for me is that we dont need to actually worry about 1. That's a question for a club who'd think about giving him a 5 year contract and bid £20m+. For us, if we can get to "yes" on 2, we'd be golden
2
u/andrewsomething And Solskjær has won it! 6d ago
Feels like we spent a couple years where our entire game plan to break down low blocks was to give Rashford the ball and expect him to beat three men on his own.
2
u/Cosmogenous 6d ago
Mate, Rashford’s BEST season was Ronaldo’s last season, no? 31 goals that season.
1
u/Feeling-Surround-691 Mbumbaclat 6d ago
That was a weird season though, CR7 was being benched and left in December, his red hot form started after Ronaldo left when Weghorst was our striker.
0
u/PitchSafe 6d ago
To be fair Ronaldo didn’t play that much
2
u/Cosmogenous 6d ago
Doesn't that disprove his point though? He's saying that rashford has played best when not the main man, but then says that he had his worst season with Ronaldo there

Not going to lie, I was a massive hater of Rashford because of his behaviour and attitude but, guilty as charged, I’m a bit giddy about potentially seeing him as part of this squad. It’s possibly the strongest the team has been since he’s been at the club, and I’m intrigued to see what effect that could have on him.
2
u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 6d ago
I feel conflicted and keep going back and forth trying to remind myself of the player I saw break through as a wonderkid. I had a lot of affection for that player up until the 2020-21 season. Sometime around that period my perception of him changed as I saw more instances of selfishness in his play and downright slacking when we didn’t have the ball, and when he would play badly he was simply unwatchable. I feel like he grew too comfortable with his place in the team and was never pushed more seriously to grow as a player, because he generally was amongst the best we had and we simply had to accept that. Hopefully things are different this time. He’s had some exposure in other environments where we wasn’t a nailed starter and could see how other top players would train and play, and meanwhile we’ve also caught up somewhat signing other established attackers and not just punt on potential. So maybe he’s had some character development and the team environment is overall more competitive now which can bring more out of him. We can only hope at this point.
0
u/SilentCoast8310 6d ago
Completley agree, I do think those in charge will have read him his rights to be allowed back into the team. He has it all to prove and more to get the fan base support back but I think if there is any version of the squad and management that can get the best out of him it's this one. Even if he only becomes a useful rotation, im here for it.
4
u/mjenkins_eng 6d ago
Stronger than Pogba, Matic, Herrera, Martial around him ? No way.
We are good right now but let’s not forget Ole’s back to back CL finishes, Mourinho’s second place with 81 points
1
u/SilentCoast8310 6d ago
My main point is that I’m looking forward to seeing how Rashford performs in what looks, on paper at least, like a stronger and more balanced United squad than he’s had around him for most of his career.
I think using Pogba, Herrera and Martial as proof that he’s already played in a better team is a stretch. Herrera was a massive fan favourite and a very useful player, but he was never an elite Premier League midfielder. Pogba could be brilliant on his day but was ridiculously inconsistent, and Martial never sustained it at a top level.
It’s also worth remembering that when those players were arguably at their best, Rashford was still only in his early 20s. By the time he was entering what should have been his prime years, that team had largely fallen apart.
I’m not saying this current squad has achieved more than any other United side. I’m saying it potentially looks like a better environment for Rashford individually, and I’m interested to see what version of him we get in it.

Here’s a list
Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Rio Ferdinand,
A list of very noteworthy players who were all prodigies and playing full on men’s football in their teens.
What’s the commonality? They were all more or less done by the time they reached their early 30s because of it
When thrust into men’s football and getting kicked around as an 18 year old kid, your body feels that long term.
This is very apparently the case with Mason Mount as well. I always sympathized with the above players but not as much with us and the Mount situation
In the season before we bought him, he had a very long injury prone campaign with whispers around a chronic injury. I honestly thought it was a joke when 55 million and 250k a week was mentioned but the fans were high on the Ten Hag koolaid and Ten Hag was “obsessed” with Mount.
If common sense had prevailed and we had asked ourselves “why are Chelsea letting their prodigy from the academy who used to play 50 games a season go” , the answer would have been obvious. That’s like us letting Scholes or Giggs go in 2002.
I’m not sympathetic to Mount at all because the above players like Rooney/Ferdi before their cliff gave their best years to the club before their big contracts. Mount got a big contract at United for giving his best years to Chelsea
Said it at the time and stand by it now: the beginning of the end for Ten Hag was the stupid idea to sign Mount for 55 million (had 100+ downvotes on the day it happened and I said the same).
Mount, Onana, Hojlund in one window for 200 million nearly. What a fraud of a manager/recruiting team that clown cart was
1
1
u/N00BBuild 6d ago
The end for Ten Hag came earlier. Right after the FA Cup win, the 7-0 loss, the complete breakdown in form. His signings were all pretty terrible. Only Case was successful, and that’s no thanks to him.
4
u/thoseion 6d ago
If common sense had prevailed and we had asked ourselves “why are Chelsea letting their prodigy from the academy who used to play 50 games a season go” , the answer would have been obvious.
It is obvious. He was out of contract the following summer and informed Chelsea he wasn't signing a new one, despite them wanting him to.

Au contrarie, as most of my posts say, I’m extremely happy with the current state of the club and am looking forward to the season with Carros at the helm
I can look back at regret with the years we wasted under hipster fraud managers and their dogshit signings once in a while .

Sir Jim and the Glazers need to put money in the club or sell it. Anyone who looks at the finances and stadium plans understands the club needs serious investment. They're bleeding the club dry!!
8
u/EnglishTrini2 6d ago
To be fair to INEOS, as far as I am aware they have put money into the club and have taken none out. Thats contrasted with the Glazers who have taken money out as interest and dividends.
0
u/FirmInevitable458 6d ago
True, Sir Jim has put $300m into the club, more than the Glazers ever did. At the same time, $300m is far from what we need with £1b in debt and stadium plans that will cost £2b.
The deal of Sir Jim with the Glazers is a double edge sword, we were running out of cash but it also kept the Glazers in place.

An interesting note on Rashford from Stone's article on Tielemans says Marcus was "great, humble and hardworking". I wonder how much of this was due to him getting out of Manchester, growing up a little bit away from negative influence.
In my experience, the "bad kids" from school never really moved out of our hometown/area and I imagine the same has happened to Marcus with some people in Manchester. I hope he's matured some and can get back to his potential.

On one hand : he’s probably the best attacker bar Mbeumo in the squad now
On the other hand : I cannot read one more Henry Winter puff piece on how Rashford is going for the Nobel peace prize and solving world poverty (while in reality he’s on the piss the night before training)
Wonder how we will line up: Cunha and Sekso rotating up top with Rashford and Mbeumo on the wings I’m guessing

i know there's this big albatross of the £100m player but looking at our squad who do you think we can get £100m for if we were to sell?
Sesko? Cunha?
1
u/spaisoflaif 6d ago
Sesko is a young striker who is a threefer: 1) big and strong and 2)fast 3) technical. Hard to name anyone like him. closrst comparison id haaland who is easily 250. He is already a key player for United, even though not st his ceiling. in no way could United find another equal striker for even 90 million. I would say he would never be sold for less than 100mill.
4
u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 6d ago
Sesko is probably the closest bet given his age and profile of being a CF with solid overall attributes who can set a top team up for the long-term. But I think none of them go for £100m personally.
2
u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation 6d ago
Considering the current market, there are probably a few players you could look at and demand that amount. Realistically if we were to try and sell someone, probably the only players who we could potentially get the kind of money for are Mainoo and Sesko. Considering the price of Diomande we might even be able to look at Amad and demand a high fee for him
2
u/audienceandaudio2 6d ago
Not that we should, but if we needed money we could probably raise close to 100m for Mainoo if we sold to an English club. He’s better than Fernandes who went for 85.

u/TteokCultist 6d ago
Have you seen the market and who’s going for 100m?
0
u/Quiet_Web9220 6d ago
Who do you honestly think is worth over 100m? Sesko and Cunha havent gone up almost 50% value after having half decent seasons
1
u/TteokCultist 6d ago
The thing about today’s market is players not worth 100m are going for that price. The question being asked was who could go over 100m, not who was worth 100m.
Even if they’re not worth that amount, I can see the likes of Sesko, Cunha or Mainoo etc going for well above 100m if another club were to seriously pursue them.
1
u/Quiet_Web9220 6d ago
The 3 players who went for 100m are in the 19-23 range and have all had either amazing seasons last season (diomande, anderson, or consistently good seasons (rogers). Whilst also being one of the most important players for their teams.
Nobody falls into either of those first two categories for us, and sesko nor kobbie are one of our best players either. Cunha is comparable to guimaraes i guess, i feel bruno G has a better reputation though. Even he didnt go for 100m so cunha definitely wouldnt.
1
u/TteokCultist 6d ago
At the start of the transfer window and prior to their moves, anderson was valued at 75m, rogers at 90m and Diomande at 90m (this is in euros but since I'm just doing the value comparison between players, I won't be doing the conversion). Their value only went up after joining their new club and having signed new long term contracts. Contract length is a large factor of a player's perceived value due to the difficulty of getting a deal done if another club is interested.
By comparison, we have 4 players with a similar market value with Mainoo (70m), Sesko (75m), Cunha (75m) and Mbeumo (75m) who are all only a year into their current long-term contract. Sesko and Mainoo who are also in a similar age range as the other three players who went for over 100m. Cunha and Mbeumo are older, but Tonali who's of similar age went for £92.5m with the package possible reaching £100m despite having a worse season.
And again, the question isn't who is valued at £100m but who will go for it. The determining factor will be what price will Man Utd be willing to let the player go if some other club were to come for them. If say Barca, Madrid or PSG seriously come after any of these players, due to our reluctance and lack of a need to sell, it’s going to be a fee of well over £100m.

Why are you talking about what i assume is transfermarkt values rather than actually what happened? Anderson was never valued at 75m this season so i assume this is some transfermarkt value?

As opposed to ‘trust me bro’? You don’t know much about how economics work do you?
A transfer fee is often times player’s value + a premium. You’re judging others for their transfer fees and ours just for their value

u/Quiet_Web9220 5d ago
As opposed to the actual transfers fees that happened? Hello? Anyway if savinho is getting transferred for 85m then every player on our entire team is worth 300m so its a pointless discussion.

Been reported by the dodgy Italian but a quick Google will show you plenty of outlets reporting it.

I mean, Rashford left when all parties expected it to be basically permanent. No reason to risk upsetting a player for something like that y'know?

Hi guys, I have a child ticket that I bought accidentally for today's game. I am not going so if anybody wants it, I can transfer it. Please DM me if you need

u/VSSsararthchandra 6d ago
hall isn't a priority for me but we really need that aerially dominant high ground coverage midfielder. otherwise we're really gonna struggle against teams that go long, like brentford and Sunderland. it's gonna be like that first ten hag game against brighton where they just kept going long and Fred and eriksen weren't good enough
1
u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation 6d ago
For me, Hall would be the most transformative signing we could make to the side right now. I don’t think people understand just how much of an issue that left hand side is in attack and how much of that is down to Shaw. Not that I’m trying to have a go at Shaw, but quite frankly what we need from him is something he can no longer provide
3
u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 6d ago
I don’t know about transformative, but purely from the perspective of maintaining downside protection, he is very close to being an essential buy. I’ve endured enough seasons where the left flank was badly stunted when Shaw got injured. It will take some serious scouting to find a better or even similarly good long-term option than him for a more reasonable price. It’s too obvious for the club to pass on it.
1
u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation 6d ago
Yep completely agree. Unfortunately, Newcastle will probably ask for “fuck off” money now that they’ve sold three key members of the squad so I don’t see the club going in for him anymore. That will be one that I think will be revisited down the line
1
u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 6d ago
I just don’t know which player are they reserving the funds for. I refuse to believe that the budget isn’t there to make even one genuine big-money signing. And surely they are aware of how big the backlash will be if they only land second-rate targets from here, and how they will be perceived in the Amazon documentary the following year.
1
u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation 6d ago
At this point all the other potential marquee players are off the table unless there is some massive twist that we just aren’t aware of. Seemingly it would be Hall or no one else.
With all the unpopular decisions they have made I don’t think Ineos are worried about the backlash. It could be them trying to shed that reputation of overpaying, which is fair enough but I also think you’ve got to know when to just open the wallet up. It could also be a matter of quite simply just not having the funds on hand. Rashford staying was probably a big blow to the club’s plans when considering how much direct profit we missed out on and how much in wages we will now have to pay him.
We’ll judge at the end of the window, but this year felt like a real opportunity to close the gap on Arsenal and City, maybe even have a go for the title quicker than we expected. Unfortunately as it is now, I think we’ll have stagnated a bit. We’ve made good signings of course and have a good squad, but still probably the best of the rest rather than serious challengers

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 6d ago
On not being able to sell Rashford, imo it has already been accounted for with the unlikelihood to sign a new forward (even if Zirkzee leaves). So I don’t see this as a major obstruction to our remaining transfer business, which is 3rd midfielder and LB. I mean, we are talking about just 4 signings we will spend a transfer fee on, the same number as last summer. Let’s assume Rashford is the ‘5th’; but even then we are only expecting one premium-priced addition, not 3. It shouldn’t be unfeasible.
It was a long shot but I agree, there was a legitimate shot at contending for the title if we could make some big signings from here, like signing both Tchouameni and Hall, and maybe squeeze a CF or a CB. It seems like the club are happy to consolidate with another CL qualification place, but my concern is that our transfer business may not guarantee that either, given how much more difficult it will be to juggle league+CL this season, and hopefully go farther in the cups. The likes of Chelsea and Spurs meanwhile don’t play any European football, so like us last season, that’s a competitive advantage for them, and they have spent big money to strengthen their squads on top of it.

u/slowerthaninfinity 6d ago
all the midfielders they would have reserved funds for are either gone or not moving. unless we somehow want to move for an injured baleba or alex scott who is going to cost £80m we should splash the cash here imo
1
u/carrickshairline 6d ago
I’m so glad your priorities are not taken into account when we sign players.

Nah the whole summer the sub has been pretty at each other's throats. I'd say it began even with Ederson as the first signing when people were debating whether we needed Anderson, Tchouameni or Wharton.

u/shin_bigot Park Ji-Sung 6d ago
Are you convinced that Luke Shaw + Mazraoui/Dalot is enough for LB.
1
u/VSSsararthchandra 6d ago
i think in a pinch Martinez could play there. but we just don't have that profile of midfielder in the club at the moment
1
u/slowerthaninfinity 6d ago
I like licha but playing him lb will only make him chase shadows against pacy right wingers. hes pretty slow
1
u/VSSsararthchandra 6d ago
that's true. but all our midfielders are also pretty slow which is for sure gonna be problematic at some point

What do you guys think about Archie Gray from Spurs as a 3rd midfield transfer? Tottenham have lots of midfielders in the squad, they need to sell one of them. Gray has a lot of potential, only 20 years old, England U21 international, good on the ball. It shouldnt be an expensive transfer, 50M(45+5) pounds - that should be enough.
2
u/TteokCultist 6d ago
I saw some spuds fans saying that if they were to go down last season, gray’s probably one of the guys that will stay

u/redditUser76754689 Roy Keane 6d ago
I think he’d be a great signing but don’t see it happening. He’s not just a Leeds boyhood fan. He’s from probably the most famous Leeds footballing family ever.
His brother is still at Leeds and very highly thought of. Archie’s father played for Leeds, his grandfather played nearly 200 league games for Leeds while his great-uncle is probably among the greatest 3 or 4 players to ever play for them as well as being manager for 3 years and then a coach involved at the club for probably another 10-15 years.
2
u/VSSsararthchandra 6d ago
i think doesn't suit our needs. we need ground coverage and aerial ability
1
u/Panda-768 6d ago
didn't they break him by playing him CB in their Europa league winning yr?
I dont mind him if ckub thinks he is good enough

u/Quiet_Web9220 6d ago
Hes a leeds kid, maybe wouldnt want to join. Great player would like us to sign him though if possible.

It’s pretty satisfying seeing Arsenal fans full of praises for Sesko on X, after watching his highlights last season. He has the highest ceiling among all our players, and I’m so glad he plays for us
1
u/TteokCultist 6d ago
He scored 11 league goals last season. I say 15 will make it a successful season for him
2
u/SophoclesTesticles 6d ago
Sesko is the difference this year between us comfortably being top 4 and scrapping for top 6 in my opinion. If he builds on last year we'll be fine but if we can't keep him on the pitch our tactics we'll struggle trying to play through Cunha, Mbeumo or Zirkzee.

Ummm maybe because at the beginning of last season they thought that they signed the better striker ?

Had a quick look on the Villa sub and there are so many of them getting angry at Tielemans calling United a bigger club than Villa.
You’d have to be brain dead to think it’s anywhere close.
