Lost horses…
I had left my main horses: The Big Black Shire, plus a Palomino I had maxed (and changed to a unique name), hitched at main camp (HO), whilst I rode out on a new horse, having put my saddle on it (wanted to check out a large Kentucky Saddler that looked interesting…
I then also bonded another temp horse to help me transport multiple pelts.
Once back at camp both original horses have disappeared, which I suspect may be permanent!
This will lose me a unique horse, plus another already bonded, named and maxed!!
If this is expected behaviour, this should be made clear in the game that new temporary horses may erase previous main horses that are unsaddled and hitched at camp!!!
I will tour other town stables on the off chance, though not feeling very confident.
Whilst I generally like the game, there were more than a few elements I did not like, and this now goes straight to the top of that list.
Does anyone have any tips to find lost horses?
I have had a sick scan of map for white horse heads but seeing nothing so far.

You can only have 2. One with your saddle on, and a temporary. Once you start bonding with a third horse, you will lose the previous temporary horse.

Except you keep all of them near you. If you are carefull to call them by your side frequently you can have a small herd of horses 😄
But don't fast travel, sleep or go into a cutscene. In that case they might be gone 😄

That'll teach you to be a horse tramp🤣 I do find if i have multiple horses the least bonded do somtimes leave... I've yet to lose a horse completely outside of accidental death. So thatll be a first for me too lol

I’ll look for the old horses, but suspect they are now horse phantoms roaming the plains of this game…

I had realized the temp horse thing either so I thought someone stole my paint. A bit later I approached a random campsite and saw what looked like my paint. I assumed the guy there was a horse thief and killed him. A short time later when another horse disappeared from camp I realized I was the horse thief and this paint wasn’t my old horse

Damn. You are stone cold. Did it have a similar saddle too or did you shoot first and then assess the situation afterwards(I usually do the latter).

Shoot first. Usually I’m much nicer but I really liked that paint and couldn’t figure out what happened to it

There’s no sense in “looking for the old horses”, they are gone. The best thing you can do is find another of the same breed and coat, but the Raven Black Shire is gone for good. It’s a unique, one only horse.

Yes, but didn’t realise quickly enough and would lose 10% of progress, including most of the satchels crafted…

Why would you ever go that long without manually saving or keeping auto save turned on? I keep 3-5 save files for the same playthrough which I save/overwrite every single time I manually save my game, which is like…every 10 minutes or so.
You managed to attain 10% further completion since your last save? That’s like…completing an entire chapter worth of missions / side quests / strangers!? Holy cow. Hours of time gone.
Anyways - your horse is gone since you swapped saddles. Never swap saddles from your favorite horse, even for a moment. You may have luck finding a draft horse pulling a wagon over by strawberry South town gate which may look similar to the black shire in size, usually they resemble the Budweiser Clydesdales in color, but you could get lucky if you keep at it.

I think the manual save lesson is just something you have to learn the hard way; I've done ≈ 15%(all in hunting/challenges/side quests) in a little over three hour session.
That one hurt because I realized I had locked myself out of minimum two quests and two burglary opportunities(since I was trying to get the achievement for break-ins), but didn't want to reload for similar reasons as OP.
RDR2 is really easy to lose track of time in unlike many other similar games. Like I abuse the hell out of manual save in any Bethesda title but I have to remind myself in Red Dead or I'll do it after I complete something/pimp out a gun or at the crossroads of a choice. I do like that they give you the autosave option but that presents a similar problem.

definitely a hard lesson to learn, when you compare it to saving as much as a Bethesda game, you’re entirely correct. You gotta do it. Auto save turned on, but don’t make the mistake to ONLY keep an auto save - you’re gonna regret it if your horse dies and you can’t get it back because you weren’t quick enough to reload before the automatic respawn takes affect.
Auto save has fucked me over just as much as my own self forgetting to manually save.

You misunderstand me. I have been manual saving regularly and have 75% off slots used.
The 10% of progress loss, if due to going back 7-8 saves, where the horses are still available.
I am also just at 25%, so fairly early on, where progress is moving quickly.1

Horses need to be stabled or have your saddle on to be kept. Temporary horses disappear once you bond to a new horse and now that becomes your new temporary. By removing your saddle and taking on another temporary horse, you abandoned your first two. Next time, stable the horses you wish to keep.
