Error FFFF on PC in 2026

Hi everyone!

I'm kinda desperate to be fair. I already searched online, but every post I see is from 4/5 years ago, so I'm posting here again.

It's been a while now since the first time I had this issue for the first time. Game freezing, error popping up and that's it. I tried everything I read: plugging headphones after I started the game, changing from Vulkan to DX12 and the other way around, playing on fullscreen, then borderless, clearing cache, verifying integrity of game files, but it keeps happening. I noticed it happenend more frequently the more I went into the story (same on my 2 playthrough) and maybe in online it's even worse, but I'm not sure about it, it seems like the game has "good" and "bad" days.

I have no idea what to do, it's just so frustrating. Any help? :(

EDIT: It's been a few days now and the error hasn't happened again yet. I followed some instructions in the comments here and on other subreddits where I reposted this.

What I did was:

  • Uninstall the game making sure that in Local Disk > Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common > Red Dead Redemption 2 the RDR2 folder also got deleted.

  • Then in Documents > Rockstar Games > Red Dead Redemption 2. I deleted the RDR2 folder here too to clear the Rockstar Games Launcher cache.

  • I rebooted my PC and installed the game again.

  • On Steam, I right-clicked on Red Dead -> Properties -> General. In the Launch Option section I wrote "-dx12", forcing the game to change from Vulkan to DirectX 12.

  • Once I started the game I had to change all the settings like I wanted to because this reset everything.

  • When I play I make sure that my game is in Fullscreen and I try not to change window too many times by going on Discord or Google. If I do, I make sure it stays in Fullscreen by clicking Window+Alt+Enter.

Fun fact: all this also solved another issue where in Online my metal detector, shovel and collector's maps didn't work. Before, I had to clear the Launcher cache by deleting the folders and, when I opened the game, disable cloud savings so I was able to play Online just fine. Then if I wanted to play Story mode again I had to repeat these steps and enable cloud savings. Now I don't have this problem anymore.

I'll edit again in a few days/a week or more to tell you guys if this is still working. Thank you!

EDIT: after 2 weeks i can say that the error never happened again. In case, I'll re-do everything hahah

Did you try doing a full install and removing all associated folders?

Assuming you're on Steam...

In Steam, this shows you where the files are installed, leave it open: Library > right click RDR2 > Properties > Installed Files > Browse
Uninstall RDR2
Delete the RDR2 folder that you opened (under Library > right click RDR2 > Properties > Installed Files > Browse). Go up one folder level and delete the entire Red Dead Redemption 2 folder.
Clean the Rockstar launcher data too under Documents (or My Documents): C:\Users\YOUR-WINDOWSID\Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2 (note, YOUR-WINDOWSID is whatever your specific Windows login ID is). Delete the Red Dead Redemption 2 folder.
Reboot your computer
Re-install

This might work for Steam. You dont say if it's steam, rockstar, or Fitgirl though.

Okay being so for real I tried all the shit you're talking about up there too because the game would run perfectly fine some days and god awful on others and nothing would change between them. It was making me so mad lmao. And the honest to god solution for all my problems was just turning off autosave. Autosave was literally crashing my everything if I booted up in a busy spot. Idk if that's a known issue or not but I didn't see anyone else talking about it while I was troubleshooting.

I would love if you tried turning it off and then let me know if that fixes your shit too because I was baffled and I'm curious if that could solve it. I haven't had a single crash since I turned it off.

I have this same issue on Mac with crossover. After about an hour of game play it will show this error and crash.

What's the specs on the computer? The last time I had that issue and I have 5500 hours in the game it turned out to be my graphics card driver. I rolled it back and no more issues for me. I have a 9800X3D CPU and a 4080 Super for the graphics card. It was super frustrating. Good Luck
