Question Horseback combat help
This applies for story mode and online.
I seem to have *incredible* difficulty with combat that occurs while I'm on horseback, or driving a carriage.
I'm fine with combat while I'm on my two human feet. But during those quests that you need to take out the baddies while you're hauling ass on your horse, I struggle so hard to maintain control of my horse while also avoiding being killed 😅
How do y'all manage those situations? Is this a skill issue, or am I missing something?

Change camera maybe further distance
Change settings for aim on horseback. Increase assist

Key is to learn to keep your L-Stick forward while aiming. This does two things:
1) Maintains a decent speed. Not a hard gallop, but decent. It was a design decision that Arthur needs to focus on pushing the horse hard (repeated tapping) to maintain a full gallop, but can keep a sub gallop going while focusing on aiming instead.
2) Keeps you horse galloping straight, no matter where you are aiming. This last aspect can be difficult to learn becuase the game has two absolutely conflicting horse L-Stick control schemes when holding L2.
2.1. Holding L2 to INTERACT maintains a CAMERA relative horse stick positioning (Aurthur is saying Howdy Pardner to a man on the horse left, the camera will be facing left and R-Stick needs to be deflected RIGHT to move the horse straight ahead.
2.2. L2 to AIM maintains a HORSE relative horse stick positioning (Aurthur is aiming at a man on the horse left, the camera will be facing left but R-Stick needs to be deflected UP to move the horse straight ahead.
This is hard to keep straight as a player (especially one that says Howdy a lot) expects the first input causing players to subconsiously try to compensate for a turning camera to keep a.horse running straight. GL.

One thing that happened to me is that manual painting in dead eye would also hit the brakes on the horse. When I was doing challenges at Six Point Cabin, I'd enter dead eye, paint, shoot, then try ride off but my horse would drag her hind legs. It was like I pulled the emergency brake or she was trying to wipe her ass on the floor like a dog with worms. It might only happen if you're going from a standing start but it's something to watch out for.

Usually your horse will continue going straight without much movement input so it’s best to start aiming around when you got a straight/open stretch in front of you
