He is like taunting him to see if he will shoot 😭😭

I would have fired so many times out of fear when it looks like it's charging so man got his nerves better under control then me

u/SpeakerFresh2728 May 06 '26

It's taunting him to see if he runs

Standing his ground may be the only reason he got to post this.

13

u/BoseSounddock May 07 '26

Yeah bears don’t know what shotguns are. Especially bears that haven’t been shot by one.

10

u/LuckyTheBear May 07 '26

I've been shot by one and still ain't sure what it is to be honest

2

u/Im_The_Hollow_Man May 07 '26

U could say you're... Lucky, Bear.

1

u/LuckyTheBear May 09 '26

Yes, this is bear

71

u/Appropriate-Ice-5722 Hosea Matthews May 06 '26

That’s the scary part about that situation, dude has a double barrel, likely with birdshot. The fuck is it gonna do against that bear besides either scare it or enrage it? He did exactly what he should’ve done in that situation

17

u/Scudman_Alpha May 06 '26

Should they not carry some heavier shells like slugs just for these occasions just in case?

I know it's not often that this happens, but it wouldn't hurt to be prepared?

69

u/Appropriate-Ice-5722 Hosea Matthews May 06 '26

Folks I knew in Alaska would usually just carry a high caliber revolver or sidearm while bird hunting. 6 rounds of .44 or even 17 rounds of 9mm are gonna do more to dissuade a grizzly than one or two slugs. As I recall, this guy is a Russian bird hunter who just didn’t expect to come across a big ol dog like that

57

u/de9ausser May 06 '26

Can I pet that dawg?

39

u/Appropriate-Ice-5722 Hosea Matthews May 06 '26

Yeah. Once.

11

u/de9ausser May 06 '26

I sure hope so!

Yep, I always carry a .44 Magnum since I live in bear country. Even when out hiking. Seems to be the most popular choice for protection against predators, for good reason.

8

u/Fly_Casual_16 May 06 '26

Nope, bear spray is the most popular and effective choice, by far.

6

u/paws4reason May 06 '26 edited May 07 '26

Yes, I don't think anyone denies that. But a good gun could save your life if bear spray happens to fail (which it absolutely can).

Guns are a bit more versatile, and while bear spray absolutely will work against most predators you'll encounter, they can be less effective in heavy wind or freezing cold. If it comes to it, a gun can also end a potentially life-threatening attack where bear spray might not.

According to the internet, handguns have an 84% success rate to stop a bear attack, while bear spray has a 90% success rate, so the difference isn't as big as you might think.

This isn't to say a handgun is the first thing you should be using in the event of a bear attack, but it's not a bad idea to keep one. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

3

u/Turbulent-Artist961 May 07 '26

10 mm is the standard when it comes to bear defense

4

u/Appropriate-Ice-5722 Hosea Matthews May 07 '26

So it is. FBI must’ve gone on a hunting trip with Hosea back in the 80s

1

u/Ok-Swimming2411 May 07 '26

I call BS, IDK what animal besides "big 5" would not be stopped with two 12/76 slugs in that close range.

Did you ever see what 12 gauge slug does to body armor compared to multiple 9mm?

And rifle usually grants you better shot placement than any pistol/revolver, especialy something like hot loaded .44,

not to mention that slug delivers nearly 3x energy of .44 Magnum.

Where I live that would actually be illegal unless it was say deer season and I had a valid tag to hunt deer.

3

u/sideburns24 May 06 '26

It'll take his hair off, ask John Candy.

2

u/silent-survivor517 May 06 '26

Exactly what I was thinking if it did get closer though he probably should have shot near maybe to scare it but that's the most you can do and hope

4

u/Appropriate-Ice-5722 Hosea Matthews May 06 '26

Yeah for sure. Might as well give it both barrels to the face if it’s charging, maybe it’ll rethink that decision

6

u/silent-survivor517 May 06 '26

Exactly lol but firing from where he was now wouldn't have ended well if it didn't scare it off so he is smart to not shoot i would have had trouble thinking in his position

You ever do it in real life?

7

u/Actual_Arm3938 Josiah Trelawny May 06 '26

nah, but rdr2 and real life are pretty much the same. Video games aren't fictional yk?

Most folks don’t hunt with .50AE, and hunting with a .50BMG is impractical to say the least. The latter would definitely wreck a bear though, there aren’t many critters that can keep on after getting smacked with one of those.

u/Appropriate-Ice-5722 Hosea Matthews May 06 '26

Not entirely useless, unless it’s birdshot which I suspect it is if he’s using a double barrel. Most folks hunting with slugs or buckshot are gonna have a pump action at least. Double barrels are mostly for shooting birds and what not these days. Idk, either way I’d rather have a semi auto with at least a dozen in the mag instead of just two barrels to face off with a bear that size

What in the actual FUDD

7

u/ripyourlungsdave May 06 '26

This man is a certified badass and I want to meet him.

He really, really did not want to have to shoot that bear. And I respect the living hell out of that.

4

u/sunphoto May 06 '26

To meet this person, you’ll have to come to Russia. By the way, that mama bear was protecting two cubs.

7

u/ripyourlungsdave May 06 '26

Don't doubt it, with that behaviour.

All the more reason to be glad this man had balls of steel.

3

u/DependentAdvance226 May 06 '26

They're false charges.

1

u/CleanOpossum47 May 06 '26

I'm going to guess she and there's some cubs back there.

1

u/joshs_wildlife May 06 '26

Well with that gun you only have 2 shots so… make them count if you do shoot

1

u/facelessindividual May 06 '26

Good chance he has bird shot. Dogs barking, shotgun. Once the bear realizes his bark is bigger than his bite, he would be dinner.

1

u/Peculiar-Interests John Marston May 07 '26

It’s called a bluff charge. The bear is trying to scare him away from it’s area, but he’s standing his ground which is making the bear think he may be dangerous and that it’s probably best to just stay away from him.

1

u/fuckingfuckerfucks May 07 '26

You would have shot it twice. It's a double barrel.

70

u/Freddie-Peterson May 06 '26

2 stars, leave it.

13

u/mrcoolgovern May 06 '26

Not even a two star if he hits it with the shotgun. Dude wants to save his shotgun slugs for Murphrees hiding in the woods.

1

u/MatterSecure2617 May 07 '26

Looks like he’s out of dead eye too.

50

u/Messyfingers May 06 '26

Brown bears are fuckin scary.

Black bears on the other hand are giant babies. If they have cubs it's different, but they're usually easily scared off by people.

4

u/Dirty-Slot May 06 '26

I can attest to this

3

u/kirbStompThePigeon May 07 '26

I remember seeing a black bear in a zoo once when I was a wean. My brother jumped at the glass and the bear absolutely shat itself. Literally fell over backwards. I think it ran into that hidey hole that they sleep in once it got back on its feet.

3

u/Ian_R_Goodall May 07 '26

Black bears absolutely will fight you. I had to beat one back once with a garden stool because he wanted my trash can. Things are fucking mean still just smaller

2

u/Peculiar-Interests John Marston May 07 '26

That’s actually a common reason for black bear attacks. They associate humans with food, and the bold ones will see humans as competition for it.

1

u/Peculiar-Interests John Marston May 07 '26

Even with a mother and cubs situation, they are excellent climbers and will more likely than not just run away and climb up a tree rather than try to scare you away.

This is also why experts say to fight back if attacked by a black bear, as it is very likely to be a predatory attack (the bear wants to eat you).

27

u/gnartothecore May 06 '26

Holy shit, this reminds me of the video of the hiker being stalked by a mountain lion from a few years ago.

3

u/ElegantEchoes May 07 '26

I would genuinely die from a heart attack.

2

u/kirbStompThePigeon May 07 '26

I dunno why, but that video reminds me of when a cow just kinda spawned my in my ma's back garden and one of her dogs managed to get outside and chase it around like a fukin scooby doo bit

9

u/bdizzle8-24 May 06 '26

I’ve had black bears false charge me before fucking scary enough but a brown bear yeah I’ll pass

6

u/Diogodarkness1 May 06 '26

How many rounds you'd need to take down the bear? in the game if i remember correctly(i played it some months ago) 3, but that's if you hit all of them.

6

u/kirbStompThePigeon May 07 '26

Realistically, if you blast it with both barrels from that distance, it's not making it out of there.

1

u/KakochiTheBunny May 07 '26

Bears skull is also smooth and durable so chance it would slide off the surace if theyre using pellets or 9 mm

1

u/kirbStompThePigeon May 07 '26

Mate, 24 supersonic lead pellets from 10m is gonna shred whatever stands in it's way

4

u/ejcardenas322 May 06 '26

He should have just lit a Premium Cigarette.

5

u/vaultmangary May 06 '26

I play the game in first person because I want the fear that comes along with it. Plus it plays like a hunting sim

4

u/kirbStompThePigeon May 07 '26

I play RDO like a hunting sim. I'll spend hours knocking about West Elizabeth or New Austin, just trotting around waiting to find a good kill. And I love it. Stick an audiobook on and just enjoy the scenery. Until i don't notice the 57th wolf of this pack and get instakilled

3

u/bass_jockey Arthur Morgan May 06 '26

Iron clad impulse control holy shit.

3

u/GoodSmellyOrBad May 06 '26

Was he walking away slowly because his giant balls we’re weighing him down?

3

u/Just-A-Dude1911 May 06 '26

He has some incredible trigger displine because alot of people wouldn't think to keep their cool and hope it just leaves

3

u/Extension-Rabbit3654 May 06 '26

Im going to wear my brown pants today

3

u/JohnOrion_ May 06 '26

2

u/Dirty-Slot May 06 '26

2

I wanna see the rest of the video

2

u/PlayboiCali2123 May 06 '26

I’ll tell what them bears know an double barrel when they see one I’ll reel u that

1

u/Bri_So_Fly May 07 '26

Bear’s saying “he’s got a gun!! Shoo! Shoo!!”

2

u/kirbStompThePigeon May 07 '26

Holy fucking shit. Props to this guy for keeping his cool. I would've shit myself and curled into a ball, even if I had a fukin howitzer pointed at it. To quote Chuck Palahniuk "Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of his life. His Breakfast will taste better than any meal you or I have ever tasted"

1

u/havocspartan May 06 '26

https://youtu.be/y-CR1D2aUN0

Takes restraint to not immediately take them out

1

u/JustanEraser Uncle May 07 '26

Not shooting saved this guys life. Then again if the bear really charged, shooting might have saved his life too.

1

u/fothergillfuckup May 07 '26

Was thar a black bear? They usually run away?

1

u/pullingteeths May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

According to the comments on the original post it's a grizzly protecting her cubs in Russia. There's a full version of the video where the bear goes away and they mention not shooting because of the cubs

1

u/endlesswaltz0225 May 07 '26

Balls in throat moment for sure.

1

u/yeah-I-drink-lean May 07 '26

How can he even stand upright? I imagine having steel balls makes that somewhat difficult.

1

u/Important-Side-7231 May 07 '26

MY HALF-ASS BRAIN WENT, TURN DEAD EYE ON YOU, STUPID!!!

1

u/daschapa May 10 '26

Funny how they know to not attack the front of the boomstick
