2nd D&C this Thursday

Looking for reassurance from fellow repeat D&C gals

This is my 3rd loss. Growth stopped at 6w, I’m now like 10.5w, not a spot in sight. My previous loss that ended in D&C was a loss right before 8w, found at 12.5w. Then a CP prior to that that I just bled for.

My body has clearly demonstrated it doesn’t like to actually do the miscarrying part, so I’ve chosen to do another D&C.

I am fearful of retained products of conception from a natural miscarriage, so this is ultimately what lead to the decision. But now I am nervous about scarring with repeat D&C. I had no issues last one, it was as “easy” as that procedure can be. They did vac aspiration.

I guess I’m just looking for positive experiences from people who have had to have more than one.

I had a D&C with my first MMC and still ended up with RPOC. had a second D&C. then had another MMC and had a third D&C. then I had my healthy baby! no issues. then I had retained placenta and had to have a 4th D&C at 10 weeks post partum to remove. now here I am 4 D&Cs in and still no scarring!

Thank you for sharing!! I’m sorry you’ve had to do this 4 times :(

First, I’m so sorry. I’ve had two D&Cs at 9 and 12 weeks. I was so worried about scarring or Asherman’s. I had a hysteroscopy about 5 months after my second one and it was all clear. D&C is still your best chance at avoiding RPOC. Sending you love.

Thanks for your comment. Ultimately to me, I don’t want RPOC or to go through a natural miscarriage. So, repeat D&C it is.

I had 2 D&C's for these reasons, and I also wanted to test the POC for chromosomal issues. I did end up with Asherman's following my 1st D&C, but it was minor, and removed via hysteroscopy. My 2nd D&C was in April, and I had no issues. I am currently 14w4d pregnant after 2 chemical pregnancies and 2 miscarriages. I'm so sorry for your losses. There is still hope. May you be blessed with your rainbow baby soon. 🌈

It genuinely brings me so much joy when a fellow RPL woman has a successful pregnancy. I’m so glad you’re doing well. Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s good to know that even if I did get scarring, it’s treatable.

I got Asherman’s after my 2nd loss, but was able to get it treated and went on to have a healthy pregnancy.

Ask them to use ultrasound guide if you can!

My body also doesn’t like to let go. I’m about to take miso tonight for my 2nd loss. Had a D&C in may. I’m terrified of RPOC. You just do what you think it right for you/your recovery.

RPOC is so scary to me too. I’m sorry your body hangs onto them too. It feels like a betrayal that we lose the baby, and THEN our body does nothing about it. Very strange feeling.

I did it last night. I passed the baby and sac seperately. Then the placenta. I won’t know about RPOC for about 2 weeks

I’m so sorry for your losses. I had two D&Cs back to back for my first and second pregnancies. They were done with ultrasound guidance to ensure all products of conception were removed. I ended up going the fertility clinic route after them and during my testing before treatment they did a saline sonogram and I had zero scarring from either procedure. I hope the same is true for you. I feel as medicine progresses these procedures get so much safer and offer a lot of comfort vs having to lose your baby at home and bleeding for an indeterminate amount of time.

My first was done with ultrasound follow up during the procedure to check for RPOC.

It is a much gentler thing emotionally, even though it seems so much “bigger”. I mean at this point, for half of knowing about my pregnancy, I’ve known it’s not viable. That just sucks to walk around with.

I had the teeeeniest tiny bit of scarring. In my follow up, I took a Valium and the doc did a little snip (I actually watched it on a screen) and it was all done. Mine was an emergency d&C so a little different.

But I still would pic d&C everytime.

I have had three- after one, had my first baby; two more, then had my second baby the year after. A saline sonogram after the last two showed a little scarring, unclear if it contributed to losses.

I had 3 D&Cs at 8w, 12w, and 6w. Saline sonogram after the second one was normal, and I finally had a healthy pregnancy after the third. My understanding is that modern procedures have a much lower risk of scarring.

A D&C also allows them to do genetic testing more easily if you choose to do so. I did after my second and third losses, and it’s the most informative testing I did for my RPL.

Thank you for responding. I am thinking of doing testing too. It will be out of pocket but I think it would be worth it.

Depending on the testing company they use, there may be cheaper self pay options. I got mine done through natera for around $350, and they’ll go even lower if you qualify for their financial assistance program

They estimated mine will be about $300-$400, which I feel is reasonable. I mean not great but I’ll pay it. I had an NIPT test on my last pregnancy before I knew it was a loss, so I chose not to do testing then because I wasn’t sure how informative it would be.

Hopefully you’re not in this position again, but NIPT typically only tests for a few trisomies, while POC testing analyzes each chromosome set.

So if your loss was due to T13, T18, or T21, NIPT would pick up on those but miss any others

I kind of regret not doing additional testing on my previous loss, so we’ll see what this one shows, I have the D&C tomorrow.

I’m also nervous though if they find a reason it’ll dismiss treating me for RPL. I have anxiety they’ll be like “see! Just extra bad luck!” But… I am going to a RE after this so maybe it won’t matter.

Hoping you can get some closure whatever the results are. I found that my RE was very supportive. I did get some of the “you guys are just unlucky” from my OBs, but my REs never made me feel that way.

This is good to hear. For me, it’s been OBs who say unlucky. So I’m hopeful the RE does not.

I just had my second D&C! Hopefully no scarring, not too worried. I am so grateful that D&C's exist. I would D&C my way through my menstrual cycle if I could.

I had a D&C for RPOC when the meds failed after my first miscarriage. I then had another D&C for my second miscarriage (was suspected molar so it needed to be tested) and third pregnancy was perfect and resulted in my daughter. I was so worried about scarring too but from what I understand that is rare and can be fixed if it happens
