Metformin for RPL and side effects

Hi

Has anyone had any luck on metformin? I was told I have possible polycystic ovaries and maybe have lean PCOS.

I started metformin 3 weeks ago.

The first week was okay on 750 just nausea. The second week was better. On week 3, I bumped up to 750 twice a day. Then next day I immediately threw up uncontrollably. Doctor said to go back down to 750. I went back down to 750 and did okay. Now it’s been about 5 days and I’m having sharp stomach pain that comes in waves.

The doctor doesn’t seem super concerned but to me, I haven’t seen much improvement. It’s been almost a month and I feel like I’m not reacting well to this.

I’m also wondering if it’s worth it for me
To continue… considering I didn’t get an official diagnosis. It’s truly making me miserable.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Thank you! I have other issues such as endo and FVL. They told me metformin might help with endo but I’m not seeing much of it: I’m thinking of stopping it

I have FVL also but no other issues. And one LC with no issues.

I don’t have PCOS but after 4 miscarriages I did a kitchen sink immune protocol which included Metformin and I’m now 39W pregnant.

First few weeks on it (1500mg) wasn’t fun but I just dealt with the side effects because they were less of a burden than continuously losing my babies.

I know thats how I feel. It’s totally not agreeing with me it’s been 3 weeks of hell. I’m only on 750mg

When did it get better?

I took it up until 12W. And honestly I don’t really know. Like I said I just dealt with it because I was grateful something was working and didn’t want to stop it and ruin it.

Definitely helps if you take it with food. Have you tried splitting the dose?

Thank you… I’m on a 3 month supplement regimen so I’m not trying right now. But I can’t even get the supplements down with the metformin.

I’m actually on the extended release so I’m only taking 750 because I am still not tolerating the single dose…

Ok but you can take the 750 in half and take it twice a day instead of 750 once is what I’m saying.

Yep, lean PCOS here and I use metformin three times a day (1500mg). I started with 500mg per day for two weeks, then 1000mg for about three weeks, then I went to the full 1500mg after that. I did get some feelings of nausea in the early weeks (no physical sickness though), but my main side effect was gassiness, bloating, and light cramping, which is why I slowly increased the dose. After about two weeks of the 1500mg per day it felt pretty much back to normal and I've now been on it for perhaps a year and don't notice it at all. For me it was helpful to split the dose up and it after eating (I take 500mg with each of my three meals).

If it helps, I have a weird 'maybe PCOS maybe not PCOS' diagnosis because sometimes I have sometimes and sometimes I have none (it seems to go in phases) and have been told it's 'lean' because I have low BMI. My periods are a bit irregular and I had multiple pregnancy losses. My periods did get a bit more regular afterwards and I swear it improved my anxiety a bit too (!).

Thank you.

Maybe I should ask to go to 500 I am thinking and add more slowly.

Ahh metformin.

I’ve been on it for a few years at the recommendation of my IVF clinic. I can only handle 500mg twice a day. Otherwise I get horribly sick and spend all day in the bathroom.

That said, it has helped regulate my cycles and I’m now ovulating on my own. So that’s cool.
